Wonderful experience, we frequent German restaurants whenever we travel and Guglhupf ranks up there as one of the best we've been too. We are fans of the Leiderhosen and Dirndl look but understand that's not the atmosphere there. We will definitely be returning. Prost!!
Outstanding food, drinks, and service! Our waitress had wonderful recommendations and helped us course out our meal for a perfect date night with drink pairings.
Absolutely an authentic experience! The food is phenomenal and it’s like a took a trip back to Germany. If you love German/European food and pastries, this is the place to go!!!
Went here for Valentine’s Day, this is my wife’s favorite place. Love the new bar. Service was great. Food was excellent as always. Looking forward to going and just sitting at the bar for a couple of cocktails.
We went to Guglhupf during Winter so there weren't a lot of people. The old fashions here are delicious and the food is amazing. Highly recommend.
I'd only ever been to Guglhupf for the coffee, breakfast, or bakery...never before for dinner! It was fantastic! The food wasn't too expensive and it hit the spot.
+/- my 6th Guglhupf visit w a friend. Why do I continue to be amazed at how amazing the food is here ! Never fails to be among the very best anywhere in the Triangle, IMO. (The rare balmy Feb. outdoor courtyard dining didn't hurt either.) Wonderful, varied menu to suit any tastes. We have never even ordered a single German dish-- & that's the food for which G. is best known ! Have to single out the mushroom mousse, which I've never had before this visit. Wow. Outdoor laid back ambiance is special, but the casual, intimate inside seating hice too. Service can be a little inattentive, but staff are friendly, accommodating, & down-to-earth. I always savor the experience.
I ordered the special and my boyfriend ordered the käse spatzel, both were delicious.
Brotzeit was terrific. Good variety to choose from. My one complaint was how close the tables were to each other.
We try to dine at Guglhupf two or three times a year, and we hit the bakery two or three times a month---it's the best bakery within driving distance of our house. That's probably why I couldn't resist the bread service that comes with various toppings. I ordered the chicken liver mousse and the smoked bluefish pate. The mousse was silky, rich, and generous, served with some tart berries (lingonberries?) on top. It could not have been better. The pate was also very good, but it was accompanied only by a couple of cucumber slices. It needed more pickles. I decided to lighten up on the entree since I definitely planned to eat dessert, so I ordered the gratin of cauliflower with a side of red cabbage. The gratin was good but not remarkably so, and the cayenne was an unpleasant surprise. Dessert, a coconut pot de creme topped with roasted pineapple, was excellent. These folks really know how to do desserts.
Amazing dinner! Great vegan options, every single dish was perfect.
Guglhupf is always a favorite for a special night out. For vegan/plant-based eaters you can't go wrong with any of their vegan-friendly options. Very creative and full of flavor!
We had a very nice evening dining upstairs. Very good food, knowledgeable and attentive staff, good selection of beer and wine. The pacing of the meal was just right and the upstairs ambiance perfect (especially on a cold night).
Great food, great server, excellent wine suggestions. We left full, but not too full. Great place for a first date!
Always a good place for a special occasion. Food was great, service was on par, and my special requests were noted and handled and I appreciate that greatly.
We enjoyed our visit to Guglhupf during Restaurant Week. We consider ourselves regular lunch customers, but have not tried special events. The pheasant pie was outstanding! I also enjoyed the citrus meringue tart and chicory salad with apples. The wine was also delicious but a bit more expensive than at comparable restaurants in the area. For bread and pastries in the Durham/Chapel Hill area, Guglhupf is hard to beat! I also love the thoughtful selection of coffees and teas.
Love the food and ambience. We went with an infant and the staff was courteous to give us a corner seat and a high chair. Great place highly recommend to folks who like Beer and some good chao.
We celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary and it was wonderful. The food was excellent as usual and the staff very caring and attentive. Will go back again and again! We are planning a special evening with old friends there!
My friend and I found out about Restaurant Week and decided to finally pay Guglhupf a visit, as we live nearby but had never stopped in. Let me begin with this—this place is GORGEOUS! When driving by, you’d never know that such a magical-looking place was just sitting right there!
The ambiance was amazing!
The service was top notch!
The food was on point!
I highly recommend for just about any occasion you can imagine.
I enjoy the atmosphere there. the service was excellent. Pastry is no. 1 in triangle.
Very good food and atmosphere. Knockworst is very good. The chicken looked even better
Delicious unique foods that will even satisfy vegans!
Food was delicious and service friendly and focused.
Was recommended by co-workers, so we decided to take my mom and aunt here to share a combined b-day dinner. The selection was decent, but not great. We all thought the food was good, but not great. No one really felt the German vibe come through.
Would love to come back and try the brunch and bakery.
One of our favorite neighborhood hangouts for date night, dinner with the family, or weekend brunch. Thanks, Guglehupf!
Ambiance is the best, especially outside in the garden, service is good, food was ok, nothing special in terms of exceptional taste.
Excellent food & service!
Thank you so much for giving us the table in the corner away from the small children at another table . We have trouble hearing once in a while and were visiting with a friend we had not seen in a while . Service was excellent . Food was sooooo good .
Love Love love Guglhupf Had the Fish Special-Filet over oysters
chowder. AMAZING!! Split the Wheatberry and Brussel sprout salad.
Dessert was devine and always great beer. A true GEM
We love the German Ćusine served here. I think this may be the only place in Durham and the surrounding area that serves authentic German Ćusine.
Took a long time to get all of the courses. Some of the food was just luke warm in temperature.
Best New Years Eve dinner ever!. Generous portions and wonderfully prepared. Attentive but never intrusive service. Thanks Guglhupf!
Excellent and authentic german food. A definite must go location. Try different entrees and gets sides and share all the great tastes. Great assortment of beers.
Been here many times - mostly for dinner. Always four star or higher experience. Good drink menu, nice selection of interesting wines and beers. Service is attentive but not claustrophobic. Food is (obviously, given the name) German in focus, but there are a variety of options, from sausage meals, to an assortment of vegetarian and non-vegetarian small plates. All very reasonably priced and delicious! Can get a bit noisy when crowded, and the chairs are rather uncomfortable to sit on, but I would not turn down another chance to experience the joys of Guglhupf!
I surprised my husband by making a dinner reservation here for his birthday. He loves German food and we have not been to a German restaurant since the one near us closed. It was a surprise find but one that we have already recommended to family and friends, as a matter of fact, we are planning a brunch this weekend. Thank you for a lovely evening. He was so surprised and very happy, and FULL!!!
I really enjoyed the romantic feel of the restaurant. Our reservation was for 6pm but showed at 5pm. They had no problems accommodating us early. The bakery was lovely. The Brotchen was delicious and we will be purchasing this and other goodies this weekend during our brunch. Great find, highly suggested.
Family dinner. Perfect
Excellent. Fantastic service, great food, beautiful remodel. Highly recommended.
Very good central European food and cuisine--this is not a chain restaurant and the diverse menu reflects that. The menu bends toward traditional German fare heavily but takes off in more modern ways also. There is a day time bakery on premises that makes excellent bread for the restaurant and commercial sales. The wait staff was competent and well trained. Ample parking (Restaurant is on left side of the joint use building) and in good weather there is a very nice outdoor dining area. First visit and we will return.
Love this place, went for the first time for dinner! The food was amazing.
This was the first time dining here. Was recommended by a co-worker as their favorite German food restaurant. Had the Schnitzel and it rocked. I have added this place to my "list" of places to frequent. My next visit will be to check out their bakery side.
