This was my second time coming to Grotto-Downtown and I did not have a good experience, unlike my first time coming. The server seemed rushed and rarely checked on me. I wanted to enjoy more wine but due to the service I left. Customer service is very important. I was in anticipation of the quiet evening enjoying great wine and food. The ambiance was superb and intimate however the service over shadowed the experience for me. Highly unlikely to come back in near future.
Not what I expected, and can’t compare to the Grotto at Westheimer and 610. Very limited menu downtown, although what was served was good. Tables are packed together and the servers are harried. We waited to be seated until 6:20 for a 5:45 reservation.
My main complaint is that it really shouldn’t be called “Grotto” because it is nothing like the other one. It is really false advertising for them to both have the same name.
We had a reservation to eat before a concert. They could not seat us.had to sit and eat at bar with an over worked bartender trying to take care of us.
We went to this restaurant before a concert at the Toyota Center in Houston. My food came out semi warm. My husband had Spaghetti and a meatball and his was hot. We wanted parmesan cheese and had to track someone down to get the Parmesan Cheese. It was very loud in the restaurant and we had a hard time hearing each other. Do not think I would visit this restaurant in the future.
The food was delicious, the staff was quick and attentive
We dined before the James Taylor concert. Our server, a delightful young lady, was terrific and helpful. We ordered a selection of small plates and they all were delicious. The meatballs were presented in small glass jars, both clever and helpful. The cavatelli was creamy and tasty, the tenderloin skewers tender and juicy and the bruschetta was unique in its use of ricotta instead of mozzarella. All in all a dining delight.
Dinner after an Astros game. We had a reservation for later but arrived early. Being a Landry’s member we were seated immediately anyway. Excellent service by Hayden even though it was very crowded and the food was top notch as always!! Always a favorite place to eat when downtown!!
Food, service and cocktails were all terrific! First time to downtown location. Will be back!!!!
Our service was impeccable. The good was delicious.
Fast and friendly service. The food tasted amazing and filled me up well. Will definitely be going back!
Loved the spot, loved the food, but the service wasn’t great!
Our waiter Jacob was very attentive and prompt. We loved our food and will return.
Great food but somewhat pricey. The restaurant was clean and well staffed. Server was very attentive and professional. Only disappointment was all extras were a' la carte.
First time in Houston. This place was great. Big crowds because of baseball playoff games. Food was great, with many choices and service was phenomenal. Visited 4 times in three days.
Our waiter was fantastic and the food was fresh and delicious
Disappointed. The water container set on the table was dirty on the inside. It had food particles floating inside of it. It was gross and we needed up getting Panna bottle water. Our server was distracted and forgot several items we requested and we waited for a while to get a napkin and extra salad dressing.
Ambiance too loud I thought the genre of music was not acceptable for the style of restaurant.
It though was a fantastic evening….
Mother to be, Bday dinner… She loved it!
Salad, pizza, pasta. Fresh ingredients, in house made. Light and flavorful. Reasonably priced for food and service. A bit crowded with an above average noise level which took away the personal intimacy but otherwise, Recommend!
good all around. particularly loved short rib gnocchi, mussels, steak skewers, comp pizza bites, wine list, salads & fish special. exceptional service.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The manager was assisting every server to ensure prompt and efficient service. Our server (sorry that I can’t recall her name) knew from our reservation that my wife had several food allergies and she accommodated them appropriately.
Food is different, ver good. Service was excellent.
It was an ok experience, somewhat expensive for the value.
Great food! Had the short rib gnocchi and meat supreme pizza. Great happy hour drinks and excellent service.
The food was amazing!! Their homemade ricotta was delicious on the bruschetta and then I got the Short Rib Ricotta Gnocchi and it was one of the best meals I have had in a while. Definitely recommend!!
I liked the ambiance and the bread. The staff was kind, although a but of a wait to order and checkout, but being with friends and chit chatting it didn’t really bother us that much. It was just noticeable. The pasta dishes we ordered was ok, Im sure there is better to try. The bruschetta was good, just needed the bread toasted a little more. Overall a “good experience”.
Pasta verdura was delicious. Shot glass size of tiramisu is just the right amount.
No dress code as previously was there
Looks like a youths bar now
Never will bringing my business partners there again, never again
Good food. Nice atmosphere.
The pizza and salad was very good and worth it, i would definitely go back and for sure would recommend!
Our cute male waiter was fantastic!
He kept giggling and telling us all of THE best foods to order.
I have never had such an incredible, great experience in my life at Grotto. Give that man a raise!!
The bolognese was very good - my son had a pepperoni pizza that was too oily. The service was great.
Horrible experience for Houston restaurant week
Very disappointing customer service. We were very excited to eat here, reviews and food pictures looked great, and in the midst of COVID they had the option of outdoor seating. When we arrived we were told they were a little short on staff so bear with them on service time, we were waiting for others in our party so this was not a big deal. After nearly an hour and not even water was brought to us we were finally able to speak to a manager who essentially said outside was closed and we shouldn’t have been seated, and she could serve us herself but it would be slow service. And even though the CDC encourages people to try to avoid gathering indoors, citing that outdoor dining is safer to prevent COVID- The host told us we should not be dining out at all if we preferred to sit outside because of our concern about COVID.
Overall good experience in Downtown. Unfortunately had children on both sides of us for date night and were playing loud shows which killed the mood a bit.
Food and wine was good but value was not as great as I’d like. Service was somewhat slow but overall good experience.
This is our third or fourth time at the Grotto. As before everything was really good. The short rib gnocchi my wife said was fabulous. I added some pasta to my shrimp dish and that to was fabulous. O my the chocolate cake is like no other. It’s a must if you like chocolate. Waitress seamed timid as maybe new but did a fine job. Can’t wait to the next time we are in town to eat here again.
HORRIBLE SERVICE.....We waited 10 minutes after we were seated before a server even stopped to look at us. Then the drinks too forever -- one glass of wine and one cocktail (which was wrong). Once the food arrived it was OK....undercooked pasta in the Carbonara, tossed salad was bitter and under dressed and when I asked for additional dressing I was told they really didn't have a dressing they could bring out to me for that particular salad???? So, then she just delivered ceasar. I had asked for a side salad, she offered a tossed side, which I accepted. When it arrived it was huge - obviously the dinner portion, which I questioned and was told it was a side salad!!! When the bill came, sure enough I was charged for the $17 dinner portion. The waitress took it to the manager who removed it because she said "it was obvious you didn't like it"....Just one thing wrong after the other! I really really wanted to love this place! I'll recommend but BEWARE!
Excruciatingly long wait. We got a table immediately but then waited on our server for hours. She said there would be bread but it was still cooking. Never got bread. She would leave and not come back for a long time. We were there for almost 3 hours.
Our server charged us for an item incorrectly. The only saving Grace was the manager who finally stepped in to help. She fixed our ticket error and helped us pay and get out of there. She was extremely nice and was doing her job plus everyone else’s. I wish I remembered her name because she was great. We Will not be going back.
Great service and excellent food!
