Great drinks, food including the vanilla cake with Mondrian curd and the whiskey chocolate cake!
Great food and very close to the Golden Gate and Orpheum Theaters. Martinis were excellent but a little bit on the small side for the cost. A bit pricey but a 15% check-in discount on Yelp made it a good value.
Service was excellent, menu is not extensive but everything we had was absolutely delicious, as were our cocktails. Location is convenient to Powell St. BART station, and near the Golden Gate Theater which made it easy to make it to our show on time, too.
Excellent meal and service.
Was a bit nervous once I saw the drink menu and in the back of it the restaurant menu. A lot less than I read in past reviews and is why I decided to drink/dine at the restaurant. The bartender, and seemed part time waiter, was very nice and extremely knowledgeable about the drinks served. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. When asked about his favorites on the menu, he answered honestly. We had the deviled eggs, roasted potatoes (the hollandaise sauce was divine), homemade spaghetti with crab and shrimp and the ribeye pork chop. All outstanding meals. The tres leches sundae and chocolate whiskey ended the evening well. We will definitely be back.
The experience was above my expectations! Good spot for dinner or drinks before the theater.
some items were excellent others so so overall ok
We had a fabulous meal. The chicken and pork were excellent. Also we loved the pasta. And the Brussels sprouts were amazing. The restaurant itself was lovely and the staff was friendly. I will definitely be back. Also a great place to eat before rushing off to the theatre.
The menu online hasn’t been updated in a very long time. The current menu had FAR fewer options (like a 3rd), nothing similar to online, and only 3 Mains (Short Rib, Half Chicken, Polenta). We were very disappointed by the mains in general, as the lentils weren’t very tasty and the cavatelli pasta was hard. But, the apps we did order were delicious (Focaccia, Salad, Brussels, etc.). And the gentleman serving us was great. We ended up having a good dinner, but this is not a place I will eagerly return to, unfortunately.
It was just... ok all around.
Solid dining option inside the hotel! We loved the ambiance. Our key server was not as attentive as she could have been, especially since we told her we had tickets to a show with a hard stop, but the rest of her team was lovely. Our dishes did come out fast, as we had a very early seating so there was only one other table actively dining. Food was well executed but nothing really stood out. With so many other amazing restaurants in SF, I can't say I'd return.
We booked an early dinner at Gibson before a tequila class at bourbon and branch. We ordered popup rolls with garlic butter, prawns with coconut rice polishing, and the saved vegetable salad. Highly recommend each of them!! The dishes are outstanding — tasty and creative — though they may sound ordinary. My friend and I each had cocktails and loved both drinks.. tho don’t remember their names anymore
Nice evening, good service, noise level pretty loud. Portions extremely small. Overall a 3.5/5.
Overpriced, food is nothing special, well presented though.
The cocktails were good, the service was friendly. We ordered hamachi sashimi, pull apart bread, scallops and 1/2 duck to share along with a bottle of wine. Then had the cookie plate. The maple peanut butter cookie was to.die.for and I don’t typically like peanuts.
Excellent food, efficient service
Food was quite bad actually. Scallops had a strong fishy smell, salmon was overcooked and tiny (seriously, like a tapa portion), and duck fat potatoes were undercooked (seriously that’s like the easiest thing to get right), and duck had a texture like it had been frozen then thawed in a microwave. The bread pudding dessert and cocktails were great though.
I’d come for cocktails and skip the food entirely.
Staff very accommodating to a vegan guest
Terrific food and drinks! Good vibe -
We were surprised at how much we enjoyed our dinner. Our waiter was terrific, very personal service and seemed to like her job and wanted us to have a good time. They offered to decant my nice bottle of wine. Our food was delicious. It's a relatively small menu but everyone found something they liked. We had the pork, halibut, steak, risotto, oysters and dessert. Drinks were delicious with a generous pour. Our bill came out to about $80 per person, including tax, but not including tip, which in SF is not too bad. It's an easy walk to the Golden Gate Theater, also.
What a meal! Started with a house specialty cocktail. Delicious. Decided not to go with the very interesting chefs tasting menu and went a la carte. The scallops with bernaise and smoked trout roe was amazing. Maybe the best dish of the night. The brisket and mushroom raviolis were so delicious. We shared 3 mains, the fried chicken, pork ribeye and dry aged sirloin. All outstanding in their own right, with a slight edge to the fried chicken. Small but well curated wine list fit the bill. Overall great value for the money.
The food and service are 3-1/2 stars. The scallop appetizer was actually very delicious. We like the crunchy quinoa and smoked beets both elevated the complexity of the dish. Scallops are both perfectly cooked. Then, we had sole and halibut for the entrees. The fish was perfectly cooked and moist. Unfortunately, the fish did not have flavor and the halibut came in the bowl. It was so hard to cut the fish.
The restaurant had around 12 tables, a private dining room and a bar. However, there was only one, or maybe two, waiter on the floor. The waiter tried to cover everything but not sufficient. The floor manager worked at the bar half of the time. I don’t know whether someone called sick or what but the service was lack behind.
We visited Gibson on a Saturday evening. Our reservation was at 6 p.m. and we were seated immediately. Our server seemed to be the only one in the main dining room attending to all the tables there, which at times made him a little unreachable. Howeve, he was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about all aspects of the restaurant. We started with oysters that were quite good and the drinks were very tasty! Between the three of us we had the halibut, pork and the chicken. We also got the roasted potatoes and mushrooms as sides which were both quite good as well as the pull apart bread, which literally just melts in your mouth. My friends had the halibut, he said it was excellent and the pork was very very good as well, I thought my chicken thighs were okay. Even though we were all quite full we were going to share the tres leches ice cream thinking we can each get a spoonful, but the chef brought us each out a small dish with the delicious toppings.
This generous act just really cemented what a great restaurant this is. Give Gibson a try, it is well worth it.
Over-priced and food was good but nothing outstanding.
The flavors and presentation of the food was spectacular. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars for food is the cut of meat (pork ribeye) was not the best, despite waiter having recommended it. The cocktail was spectacular as well (mezcal something mole). Wish I had ordered the Halibut.
Chef Louis and team delivered an exquisite meal full of flavors. His dishes are transportive, elegant and yet so comforting. The caviar was a highlight for me, showcasing a beautiful balance between salinity and sweetness with just the right amount of creaminess. The scallops were magnificent. Each bite enticing you with hidden bursts of flavor from the smoked trout roe and crispy quinoa. Every dish we enjoyed was unique in its own flavor profiles and really held its own. All this along with the ambiance of the space, the gorgeous decor, and the warm open kitchen makes Gibson is truly a hidden gem that needs to be discovered. Thank you Chef for the meal.
Gibson is in a hotel near the hotel/shopping district of downtown so I guess they think the prices are warranted, but for me it seemed a bit steep. The food was tasty - and on the salty side which I personally like, but if you don't - beware! They were playing really interesting versions of old rock standards so my boyfriend was happy with the ambiance. But here's why we LOVED it - the service was incredibly good. Sadly, I don't remember our servers name - a blond woman - who was helpful without hovering, gave honest advice about the menu and was thoughtful and, well, wonderful. We had the ravioli, the scallops, a salad and the fried chicken - which was fab! More like roasted boneless with some sort of coating - but deeelish, and not oily or heavy.
Amazing sharing plates . A must visit restaurant. Great ambience. The service was great.
Food was phenomenal! Adam did a fantastic job on this restaurant! Hands down the pork chop I’ve ever had!
Wonderful, creative food in a warm and welcoming environment. Loved the sharing plate menu, the open kitchen, and how the entire staff take care of everyone. Grab a table by the kitchen so you can watch your food being prepared, plated and then served to you, sometimes by the chefs themselves who are also happy to answer questions. Just a wonderful experience all around!
My favorite restaurant in SF when I want to try something new and so imaginative. The discovery process for recipes here must involve mind altering concoctions. They truly take it to another level. And so far I have enjoyed every mouthful! Staff is charming, knowledgeable, and there when you need them. I look forward to my next dining adventure here.
Was surprised that restaurant wasn’t packed. But it was early on a Wed. Great location for pre-show dinner at Golden Gate theater.
Food was solid to excellent. Cocktails left much to be desired in the taste department - seemed to be trying too hard to make them interesting or just missed the mark in overall taste. Service was very attentive.
We had some cocktails - which were really good- but the Service at bar was mediocre. Nothing friendly specially for a tall blond built man. Then we moved to the dinning room where the service was ok but not great. About the food; we had 2 appetizers, a salad and ravioli which were excellent, but then my main course came (Halibut) it was very salty. I ate it because I didn’t want to complain in front of my friend but it was very salty. Over all an ok experience but not good enough to recommend. Thank you
Don’t be fooled by the neighborhood or the fact that this is a hotel associated restaurant. The dishes were expertly conceived and composed. Very creative use of smoke and textures that were unexpected but delightful. Would recommend and would return.
Food is outstanding, service is professional yet warm, cocktails well-balanced!
Gibson staff was great from their drink and food recs to their overall attentiveness! I especially like that the chefs bring out the dishes to the table. Really lovely touch and charm. Definitely coming back here!
Creative and delicious use of smoke flavors in all of their dishes. Highly recommend.
Great food, great service!
Had a great tasting menu dinner. Beyond met expectations. Highly satisfied. Great portions.
