The inspiration for Gertrude’s Jazz Bar is Gertrude Stein who is famous for her appreciation of art and conversation in her legendary salon in Paris, circa 1930. We are happy to present to you a collaborative atmosphere when we can all come together for conversation and culture: music, dance, art and food.

A Jazz Musician, Artist and Dancer walk into a bar…
Meet the owners of Gertrude’s Jazz Bar!

Marlina is a dancer and entrepreneur and coordinates the dance events at Gertrudes. You might find her at the hostess station or twirling around on the dance floor.

Greg is a Jazz Musician and coordinates the live music. You may find him on stage or bringing you drinks and Tapas as your server.

Kira is an accomplished painter and woodworker and hosts social artworking events and art dinner at Gertrude's.

We arrived early and the restaurant was just opening. The first thing we were told was that there was going to be entertainment and that we would have to pay extra for it. We ordered and the food arrived before the drinks. I ordered a bottled beer which was poured partially in the glass. As I lifted the glass to drink it, there were FIVE bugs floating in the beer. When I mentioned it to the waitress, she took the beer and brought back a clean (I hope) glass but no mention of reimbursing the lost beer. At that point, not knowing what bugs may have been in our very mediocre food, we requested the bill and left. Not a nice experience!!!

Do NOT order food here. Only go for drinks. The food was the worst I’ve ever had in my life out at a restaurant. The music, view, and service are great though.

The setting was 2nd story, ocean view, open air, and... awesome Turns out that I arrived just before happy hour ended so was coached about small remaining window by my server, Merty (sp?) who, BTW, was excellent the entire evening. I stayed beyond dinner for dancing and music. Casablanca, the live jazz band that was playing was very talented and played a wide selection of music, some with vocals. The price was quite reasonable, and the evening thoroughly enjoyable.

Love the music and vibe at Gertrude's Jazz Bar. They offer a variety of music genres, good drinks and food, and a place where friends can gather to have a great evening out!

Gertrude's was the highlight of our stay in Kona. Our concierge recommended a dozen places (not Gertrude's) but my wife's manicurist said we should not miss this local favorite. Fabulous food, great service and fantastic entertainment. We went twice in four days and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves both times. Owners are warm and welcoming. Food is delicious. Angels on horseback appetizer to die for. The seafood was great. But the overall vibe is what makes this place unique. Overlooking the waterfront with sunset backgrounds that no artist could capture. I look forward to our next trip to the Big Island so we can return to Gertrude's for more nights of dancing and dining.

The fun art deco/Hawaii atmosphere and Kailua Bay views make it a must visit, but what will keeping you coming back multiple times, whether your visiting the Big Island or live here, is the incredible entertainment night after night, the great food, handcrafted cocktails and amazing team of people that make Gertrude's Jazz Bar. I have heard it time and time again from people that visit us here on the Big Island that they wish they had come to Gertrude's earlier in their trip so that they would have an opportunity to come back for more. I recommend Gertrude's for fun, for a date, for a dance or just straight up entertainment. Some of the best on the Island!

Gertrude's Jazz Bar is a great place--live music, cocktails, different food options--and it's open early! Music daily by 6:30 p.m., and on Sundays, sometimes 2 p.m., sometimes 4 p.m. It is upstairs, looking over Kailua Bay and Hulihe'e Palace. HIGHLY recommended. Good for dancing, too!
