Gertrude's Restaurant, located inside the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), is where John Shields celebrates Chesapeake cuisine using local foods, in a warm and stylish setting.
Chef & owner John Shields, a Baltimore native who is a cookbook author and television cooking show host, named the restaurant after his grandmother, Gertrude Cleary, who taught him to cook as a child. Gertrude's dishes up a sophisticated regional menu of Chesapeake foods and traditions for lunch, dinner, and brunch using local, organic ingredients whenever possible.
The restaurant's interior, inspired by life on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is beautiful & elegant yet comfortable. The wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the museum’s Sculpture Garden floods the open & airy dining room with natural light. During the warmer months, additional seats are available on the terrace surrounding a fountain and reflecting pool.

There is a parking lot for over 40 cars, operated by the BMA; payment is required to use the BMA's lot. There is also plenty of on-street parking directly in front; parking meters are in effect during our operating hours.

It was a special day of birthday celebrations and Gertrude’s helped make the day as always! The food was fabulous and our server, Justin, was just the best! Also, the lovely surprise birthday desert was so unique! Thanks for helping to make the day!

We were extremely disappointed in our visit to Gertrude's this time. My friend (who hadn't been there before) took me there for my birthday. I made the reservation via Open Table, and despite it being advertised as a 1000 point reservation, I got 100 points. Not sure if that is on the restaurant's end or Open Table's. I checked the menu online before going and they hadn't updated their menu or pricing for their Tuesday night specials. There was a big difference when we got there. No matter, because I knew how good Gertrude's is, right? Wrong! Instead of their usual crab cake dinner, on Tuesdays they offer a "Boardwalk" crab cake that is fried. While it does have some crab in it, it is a lot of filler that seemed to be like mashed potatoes. Very disappointing! When we got to dessert, there was one item listed on the Tuesday menu and we inquired if that was the only dessert choice. The waitress said it was wonderful but that there were many more choices. When she presented us with the list, we opted for the Berger cookie cheesecake. Instead we got the dessert that was listed on the menu for Tuesdays with white chocolate and crumbled Heath bars. It wasn't bad, but it clearly wasn't what we ordered and it was compounded by the waitress trying to reassure us that the bombe in front of us was indeed Berger cookie cheesecake but the cookies were ground up fine in the cake. Seriously??? She repeated this several times as she tried to convince us that we had gotten cheesecake. So overall, the "special" Tuesday nights at Gertrude's are not all that special and I would have to consider going back at all in the future.

We're regulars at Gertrude's... Its always a great experience. The food, service...alwasy top notch. And they have a special $15.00 menu on Tuesdays

I have been to Gertrude’s for brunch, lunch, and dinner and have never been disappointed. The staff’s attention to detail is meticulous. I worked in the restaurant industry for over 45 years and I know how hard everyone has to work to create such a wonderful experience for his or her guests.

My cousin and I arrived 1 hour early on Sunday February 18 for our 6:30 dinner reservation. The hostess graciously seated us early for our reservation, and our server was amazing. (I forgot her name but she was bartending and waiting tables.)

Everyone knows the food is always great at Gertrude’s and is always presented beautifully by a kind and well-trained staff. However I love going to Gertrude’s because I never feel rushed when I am dinning I am able to relax and enjoy my food, my wine, the beautiful ambience, and EXCELLENT SERVICE!

My cousin, her daughter, and I were getting into the car and we all said at the same time that was a perfect evening and I feel so relaxed. Thank you to management and their staff for such a wonderful evening.

Gertrude's never fails to disappoint! I often overlook this neighborhood gem at the Baltimore Museum of Art and then when I dine there, remind myself I should eat there more often. The seafood is John Shield's specialty and the kitchen is incredible about honoring special dietary requests.

I thought my brunch date at Gertrude's could NOT have possibly gone better. From the hostess to the server to the food and the reception my date and I received, it was a wonderful experience. The hostess complimented my date and I on what a beautiful couple we made. Our server was attentive yet unobtrusive. The food and beverages were delicious. I will be back. Thank you for such a delightful experience, from start to finish.

There was a large table of patrons that were celebrating something so was very loud. But after they left better. The crab cake special was great and berry salad was okay but grilled shrimp was over cooked. We had to ask for bread that was delivered to others as a matter of course. . But all in all a very pleasant experience.
