Gertrude's - Baltimore
Chef & owner John Shields, a Baltimore native who is a cookbook author and television cooking show host, named the restaurant after his grandmother, Gertrude Cleary, who taught him to cook as a child. Gertrude's dishes up a sophisticated regional menu of Chesapeake foods and traditions for lunch, dinner, and brunch using local, organic ingredients whenever possible.
The restaurant's interior, inspired by life on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is beautiful & elegant yet comfortable. The wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the museum’s Sculpture Garden floods the open & airy dining room with natural light. During the warmer months, additional seats are available on the terrace surrounding a fountain and reflecting pool.
Salmon Alla Bella
Organic salmon (egg, Parmesan & herbs coating), lemon-caper butter, vegetable, multigrain-wild rice pilaf
Lumps of crabmeat, sherried mushrooms, mornay sauce (gruyre cheese), fresh herbs, home fries
Spinach leaves, applewood smoked bacon, mushrooms, red onion, goat cheese tossed with a warm aged sherry wine vinaigrette
As always a great experience, food is amazing!
Service ... Jeffrey makes everything 10x better.
Terribly disappointing. My dinner was not inexpensive ($26 fried oyster platter) and it arrived lukewarm and tasteless. All breading, half cooked potatoes, weak slaw....Gertrudes used to be one of my favorite dining spots but this was a big disappointment. Given the current circumstance, the restaurant was nearly empty so there doesn't seem to be any reason why the food wasn't top notch. Bad experience!
Gertrude's is our "Goto" whenever we have a friend from out of town or any special occasion. The ambiance is lovely, the room is quiet enough for conversation, and the staff is very knowledgable and always attentive. The food is local, fresh and prepared with loving nuance. We needed a wheelchair accessible space this time, and everything was provided for with careful attention. In the past, we have also needed accommodations for life-threatening allergies, and they have given the same careful attention. I had my favorite, cream of crab soup with the poached pear salad and salmon on the side. It was exquisite. Other members ordered the fresh ravioli - which looked fabulous, and of course, the remainder of the party from out of town simply had to try Gertie's crab cakes. Every selection was wonderful and prepared artistically. Gertrude's is our favorite restaurant for almost every occasion, and we highly recommend it!
Always a great meal!
Great experience, good food and very pleasant service on an unexpectedly busy evening
Great brunch spot! And walk after through sculptor garden was lovely. As is the BMA gift shop!
The brunch food choices were outstanding as was the food itself. The pulled BBQ chicken eggs Benedict were delicious as was the spinach salad with salmon. I particularly enjoyed their Bloody Mary called Dirty Gertie. All food offerings were reasonably priced with great surroundings.
Overall every thing was good......................
My friend in from Michigan wanted a Chesapeake seafood experience, and Gertrude's delivered in spades. Delicious meal in a lovely space, with great service.
Great service and delicious food! Open air setting so one must expect conversational noise.
We had a great server in Jeffrey. He did a good job of explaining the cocktails and of making sure we enjoyed our meal. My friend had ordered the celery soup as a first course but it was very unappetizing looking and she did not like the flavor. She didn't say anything just pushed it aside. Jeffrey was on it and immediately offered her another choice in a manner that did not make her feel guilty at all. My friend had the crab cake Benedict and I had the fried oyster Benedict. They were both excellent. The dirty Gertie bloody Mary was a bit spicy for my taste but my friend loved it. On the other hand, I loved Gertrudes version of an Old Fashion with a dash of a cherry liquor and bitters. We had a very enjoyable brunch although the restaurant can be a bit noisy.
Went for lunch/brunch after an event at the museum. Delicious as always. There was a large crowd that came all at once and they handled it well.
The food and service were great, and Jude, our server was always there with a re-fill for coffee and with suggestions. The restaurant was jammed, and parking was difficult, but we had our own island of tranquility and fine service.
I’ve been to Getrude’s several times. This time like the others was a great experience. The food and drinks were good. We were seated promptly. I only took off one star for service because it seemed our waiter sometimes took a while to get back to us. In his defense it was brunch busy and it didn’t affect our experience too much. I will definitely keep coming back.
Everything I experienced with the restaurant was good!! I think they will do be as a business if they move to a location where parking would not be an issue. I arrived at 9:15am and both parking lots were full but the restaurant wasn’t even opened. My reservation was for 10am and we didn’t get seated until 10:45 because of parking.Ridiculous!! My party had to drive around for 30 minutes looking for off street parking and had to walk almost 2 blocks to get to the restaurant. 1st and last time there. Find a better location and I will surely return.
A great place to celebrate a birthday. The food and the service delivery the best to our expectations.
The fact that this was for a special occasion a birthday they didn’t say happy birthday or offer and free dessert nothing I’ve received more from restaurant rated less. The ambience was nice but the food was mediocre I’ve had better our server he was a straight weirdo he didn’t give eye contact spoke very low it was if he didn’t belong as if he was on the spectrum of autism lack social skills I not in any rush to go back
Very nice restaurant. Atmosphere was very nice, food was great and our server, Richard, was wonderful!
We finished our Saturday errands early and arrived about 45 minutes before our reservation time. We'd have been happy to sit at the bar until our table was ready, but the staff gladly seated us as there were a number of tables open. I had a half dozen oysters, we both got a cup of red crab soup, and my husband opted for the beef short rib as his main. I went for the seafood scampi with pappardelle, one of the evening's specials. Everything was delicious and our server was great. Gertrude's is the kind of relaxed-but-elegant restaurant that's hard to come by these days.
Wonderful food and Jeffrey provided great service!!
Fabulous service and delicious food. My only gripe was that at $20+ there should have been more than one crabcake. We love Gertrude’s and will of course be back many times over.
Gertrudes is reliably extremely capable of serving outstandingly well prepared food. It is one of the few restaurants in Baltimore in which to be able to converse with table mates without having to engage in high decibel shouting. Unfortunately this was not the case this past Friday evening when the , unnecessary, live music was performed by a guitar and high decibel, high frequency saxophone which made the usually sedate restaurant thrive and jump and, accordingly, preclude pleasant conversation and peaceful enjoyment of what was likely very beautifully prepared food. We advise avoiding Friday evening dinners there unless you can ascertain that the unnecessary music, if on the agenda, does not feature a high decibel saxophone.
My birthday...a very fine meal. Excellent vegetarian options. Gingerbread crepe brûlée. Yummy.
Very good service; great food.
Always a good experience at Gertrude's. Our server was extremely kind and efficient, the drinks were superb, and of course the food was to die for! I loved the soup of the day with root veggies and pears - great for someone like me with a lot of dietary restrictions. Please bring back greens on your menu and add more chocolate desserts :-)
The brunch was fantastic and several parties were celebrating birthdays so it was a fun and festive atmosphere!
A very worthwhile place to go for any meal. Sunday brunch as music that is delightful as well as great good. Popular place for celebrations, especially birthdays!
Everything was terrific but I have to give my best regards to the service-personnel and prompt and thoughtful and exceptional!
My nephew, a curious visiting foodie. and I, a tried and true foodie, truly appreciated our honest and friendly waiter. He guided us through dinner and dessert. I appreciated it.
Gertrude’s was VERY noisy, almost impossible to hold a conversation. The noise from the large parties was nothing like any of my previous visits. A guest at a table nearby called the noise “appalling for a high end restaurant”, I can’t disagree.
As always, our experience at Gertrude's was superb!
From our first greeting as we entered our experience at Gertrude's was absolute perfect. Our waitress was well informed and attentive. The menu selections were diverse and all sounded good. We each ordered different selections and we loved our choices. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
All was good but they couldn’t get my drink right sent it back I think the wait person confused a dry martini with a dirty one
Whenever I want to treat someone to a nice meal when visiting Baltimore my usual go-to is Gertrude's. Good food, reasonable price, nice ambiance and an all-around good experience.
Excellent crabcakes and fried oysters (my friend's meal), but tired, flavorless, and unexceptional sides of grilled potatoes and apple cider slaw. Because of those flaws, our meals were altogether too expensive! Our server was fabulous; all staff were wonderful and warmly welcoming to us! I must also emphatically praise the person who sat us, as I specifically requested a quiet table in my reservation, and he must have actually read this--many do not--because we are hearing-impaired and were extremely pleased that he sat us at a table away from noise! Based on the stellar service and the main star of our meals, we will definitely return!
Richard, our server, was fantastic! It’s always a treat to eat at Gertrude’s, and I love taking people here when they visit from out of town.
Friendly staff worked well with each other!
Only 2 things come to mind that could have been better - the person calling your name when your table was ready was very close to where the musicians were playing - so you really had to focus on her and listen rather closely.
Also toast with the country breakfast would have been nice.
