Gertrude's - Baltimore
Chef & owner John Shields, a Baltimore native who is a cookbook author and television cooking show host, named the restaurant after his grandmother, Gertrude Cleary, who taught him to cook as a child. Gertrude's dishes up a sophisticated regional menu of Chesapeake foods and traditions for lunch, dinner, and brunch using local, organic ingredients whenever possible.
The restaurant's interior, inspired by life on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is beautiful & elegant yet comfortable. The wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the museum’s Sculpture Garden floods the open & airy dining room with natural light. During the warmer months, additional seats are available on the terrace surrounding a fountain and reflecting pool.
Wonderful dining experience with food fantastic!
For lunch today, my husband started with the red crab soup and 6 oysters-- both excellent. We then had Gertie's crab cake with fennel and apple slaw. He had the French fries, but I substituted roasted potatoes. His fries were soggy; my potatoes were very good. The server comped us mandarin sorbet, which was very tasty.
The staff members are so snobby! The bread for the sandwich was as hard as rock and could not eat without making a mess with bread crumbs on the table. What is so good about this place???
The food was excellence as was the service.
Gertrude's never fails. The staff is unfailingly competent and gracious. The food never disappoints. Worth the trip from Washington.
We all had an amazing brunch. Everything was excellent. I will comeback again.
Great mussels and great tuna.
We enjoyed Gertrude's as part of Restaurant Week. It was an excellent value for the delicious meals we had and we added the wine pairings to add to our dining experience. A wonderful opportunity to try a new restaurant. Parking was right outside and a reasonable price too.
Overall we thought Gertrude’s would be a great place to celebrate a high school friend’s birthday!
The food was good but not great. We ordered the crab cake, the salmon and the shrimp with grits. Everything was ok! Our server was not that attentive and would not split our check. That becomes a problem when you go to pay fairly!
They brought a birthday candle in a scoop of sorbet. So beautiful setting and lovely music!
Hoping dinner could be improved. We love the brunch experience and food!
My server was rude and not hospitable. I asked her for a drink recommendation and her response was did you look at the menu. Because of this I did not bother purchasing a drink. My oyster soup had no flavor and the bread pudding was dry and spongy. I was very disappointed.
Outstanding food and service is a constant at Gertrude's
Restaurant week date.
It was a great day. Excellent food, great service, wonderful atmosphere. I definitely will come back with the same date!
The food was delicious and the atmosphere was relaxing and unrushed so it was easy to catch up with friends!
Great menu selection for restaurant week. All 6 of us liked our meals. The only suggestion is to allow comparably priced wines to substitute for wine pairings We utizlized the fun of taking in some of the art museum before dinner. This made for a special night.
All I can say is that I LOVED IT! ❤☺ .
I HAVE ALREADY TOLD SO MANY FRIENDS TO GO THERE. THEY WILL LOVE IT TOO.
Wow! This place was everything everyone said and more. We chose this place for two of my friends birthdays and I'm glad that we did.
This place has been bookmarked for over a year because I've been wanting to visit but never had the opportunity to do so.
I must start by stating our gracious table person Tom (TBW) was fantastic!! He was on point w recommendations and took the best group photos ever. 1 unfortunate downfall is someone in our party incurred a triple charge to her card. Not sure how the end result was handled but confident an establishment of this caliber made it right.
There was a variety items ordered from our table from beverages to food items to desert but the item that made me most happy was Poe's Last Word (Belle Meade Bourbon, Luxardo maraschino cherry liqueur, Yellow Chartreuse, lime). I've had my fair share of libations and this one is by far 1 of the best ever tasted... period!! It was strong yet smooth. Very flavorful and satisfying. It was definitely a sip while you sit drink. I will definitely order this drink again and again and again! While I was here I also ordered a side of bacon and a side of skillet potatoes. The bacon was yum, the potatoes were ok. Could have definitely used a little more seasoning but they were safe. At the table everyone ordered Golden Gummy Bear (Owney's Rum, passion fruit juice, orgeat syrup, Prosecco, lime) beverage, Challah, French Toast, Buttermilk Waffles, Chicken Sausage, Miss Jean's Maryland Crab (Vegetables, lump crabmeat) and Smoked Fish Platter.
Absolutely no complaints w any items ordered !!
I truly enjoyed my dining experience to Gertrude's and cannot wait to return !!
Everything was excellent, except the noise level. The service was fantastic & all the staff professional & pleasant.
The food and ambi was great but the waiter, Steve Webb was exceptional. He waited on us before and has always been a pleasure to have him serve our table.
Open table didn’t initially have a reservation available for 11:30 am or after. I called the restaurant to ask if we walked in and waited, if we could eat there. I was told they were so booked it wasn’t a good idea. We ended up getting an 1130 reservation and more than half the restaurant was empty.
Re: service....the waiter was also the bartender (or appeared to be doing most of the drink making) and thus, did not check on us. Twice we asked others for assistance. I don't necessarily fault the waiter; if he is asked to do double duty then other wait staff should monitor his table. ALL of the other wait staff NEVER made eye contact with us or other diners unless they were specifically assigned to their tables.
We went to Gertrudes for a birthday lunch. The restaurant had a good crowd for 1:00 pm on a Thursday. Now I remember why! The service was outstanding, the food thoughtfully delicious and the atmosphere calming and inviting. We have a wonderful afternoon and we will return. Thank you all for a great day!
Beautiful space in a great museum. The brunch food was delicious, I'm so glad I didn't listen to my conscience and had dessert. Our profession and friendly server Tom made us feel like welcome guests. Looking forward to a return visit.
The food was delicious and the service was excellent.
It completed a wonderful dat at the museum.
Half empty when we arrived. As we sat down, before even moving our chairs to the table, we were asked if we wanted to order “ a drink.” Curiously, for the remainder of the evening service was, atypically, much slower than what we are accustomed to receiving at Gertrudes’s. The food was excellent as always.
Beautiful atmosphere, wonderful food and service ....plus, live music! A perfect Sunday afternoon.
We enjoyed brunch at Gertrude's today. The food was delicious (we all had some sort of salad with seafood). It was very crowded and everyone we saw seemed to be enjoying themselves. We did think it was a bit overpriced for what we got though.
The significance of this review is that I did not give it Five starts all around. This is the first time I have to give four stars, especially for the food. Neither one of us had a compliment about the food to give to the server. That's a shame. The sauce for the potatoes was tasteless and runny. The lamb chops were tough. The ice cream tasted o.k. but somehow lacked a quality of presentation. I hope, really hope, that this was just an off night. However, the crab cake sampler was good.
We went for New Year’s eve dinner which can be a challenging night for restaurants. Gertrude’s handled everything expertly. Food and service were top notch.
New Years. It was great!
Gertrude's is terrific. Special early 3 course dinner was perfectly priced and excellent options. Mixed grill was perfect (steak, bratwurst, crabcake), and rockfish was tasty and , after a cooking problem, returned just right. wine is also excellent and reasonably priced, as are the house cocktails. We always enjoy it here. Suggestion: have servers return about 5 mins. after food is served to see how things are going. We didn't see Richard (who was very good) for quite awhile, and needed to return the rockfish. He cheerfully accepted it, replaced it, and provided a comp wine, which was very nice. This is always a classy and excellent evening out! thank you.
I was disappointed. I went on New Years Eve. The hostess was great. My server was excellent. His name was Christian. The soup and prime rib were both cold. I got there early. At 5:30 pm. Dont know what happened. I usually am quite happy there. However that night I was not impressed. I am so sorry to give it such a bad rating.
The service was rather poor. It took the staff 20 minutes to take our orders and nearly 30 minutes to get our food. And our server seemed like he couldn’t be bothered, though he was better toward the end. It’s a great spot. I am hoping our poor experience was due to the brunch crowd.
Out dinner was wonderful as was our waiter. Thank you for a lovely evening!
This is a very good restaurant and the staff is consistently gracious and obviously well trained. The menu has a nice variety and the food well prepared. The chef doesn't take many risks with the ingredients but there is something reassuring about getting what you are familiar with. I must comment on the crab soup. Most crab soup, even in Maryland restaurants, tastes like vegetable soup with some added crab meat. Gertrude's is the exception. The chef makes a stock with un-steamed fresh crabs. That unique flavor reminds the diner that crabs come from the sea. I would have given the food five stars but the prices charged have higher expectations.
Christmas Eve. Felt rushed Food was obviously end of service. Catties were all potato. Salad overdressed. Dessert over cooked. If you are going to offer meals on holidays, put in the effort
Staff is professional and courteous; ambience is great, and the food is terrific. What’s not to like?
I ate at Gertrudes a couple of years ago and thought it was good and a place that I would like to go back to. This experience was much different. Had a reservation for Sunday Brunch. Was seated outside right next to a heater. Was hotter outside than inside. Asked to be moved to a four top and they said it was reserved. No one ever sat there while we were there. Ordered the cream of crab soup which came out ice cold. Sent it back and it was microwaved and sticking to the side of the bowl. Besides all that it tasted bland and all I could taste was flour. From the other side of the room I could see the manager and waitress pointing at our table and obviously talking about us. RUDE. Everything we ate had this weird butter taste to it. I ordered Eggs Benedict and my friend ordered the Breakfast plate. So I can write this restaurant off as I will never return.
Terrific food and service, excellent brunch drinks, nice leisurely time. We were continuously surprised by how good everything was.
The food, the service and the atmosphere all were first-rate. I always enjoy being there. It's always first-rate.
