We were always afraid to try Gemmel's because it looked very expensive but were lurid in by their St. Patrick's Day Special. We discovered a great dinning at reasonable prices.

Outdated in need for a makeover. Food was expensive for the quality. I had the prime top sirloin, 1/4 cut potatoes and some vegetables. I'm definitely not a gourmet cook, but I promise you I could of prepared this plate myself. Moreover, for a fraction of what I was charged. The restaurant was quiet, but that was due to only being 6 people in the entire restaurant. Mind you we were there from 5:30-7:30pm on a Saturday evening. I've been at Gimmell's twice we will lot be there a third time.

We had the living social fixed price meal. The appetizers were good. The lobster bisque was really salty, not good at all. I had the sand dabs, they were ok. The vegetables and rice were like cafeteria food. My husband had the steak, which he said was ok, but not nearly as good as we are used to at a restaurant. We tried the lemon tart, crepes suzette and creme brulee. The creme brulee was very good. The service was good, nothing special. It was fun to try a new place and since we went on a Sunday the place was quiet and we were able to enjoy our friends.

My wife and I frequent this restaurant three to four times a year as it is tucked into the Dana Point Harbor. This night we were celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary and it was a night to remember. We took a nice bottle of wine from our cellar and the staff at the restaurant treated us to a "Happy Anniversary" shared dessert.

As seniors, we always use a coupon here to save a little $$$, so it's a real bargain - - pretty much 2-for-1. It's waaay too much food, tho'. They easily could cut portions by 1/3. One is very full before dessert & coffee! We started with glasses of lovely wine: one Pinot Grigio, one French Rose. We again split the app of champignons (so good), then we had one very nice mixed salade with a delicate vinaigrette and one lobster bisque (darker than expected, and of course heavy & rich, but very good), entrees we chose were pork loin slices (portion far too large and drowning in sauce, but absolutely delicious), and the sand dabs meuniere were very good (portion too large, and again drowning in sauce - we'd prefer far less). Veggie accompaniment is always spot-on. Already too full and taking some entree home, we both decided on the cheesecake. Very nice, not too heavy. Good strong coffee, which is always a welcome finish! The wait staff is a little strange - and usually different each time we go.

We went for Valentine's Day. There was a set menu which they do Not have except on holidays. It was romantic. The staff tried to be most helpful. We had the duck pate which was so smooth, and flavorful. I highly recommend it. Heavenly. Caesar salad was excellent. Bite size pieces. ( no offer of anchovies). The pasta with shrimp was perfect. Although not especially French, the sauce was tasty and the consistency was lovely. Duck was pretty good. The sauce was not too sweet but since it was late in the evening the texture was a little dry & not as crisp on the outside as I prefer. But certainly eatable. Dessert was perfect. Meyer lemon cake first then very chocolate mousse A satisfying evening.

Too bright for intimate French dining. Sunk into the chairs. Felt like the little kid that got to sit at the big table. Service was friendly, but very slow. Food was disappointing. Over use of tarragon, and the Chilean Sea Bass was NOT. This could be a great place, but the absence of diners on Friday evening, tells it's story.
