About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Innovative
  • Vegan-friendly
Freya is a multi-course dinner restaurant focused on executing the points of service at upper echelon restaurants in larger markets while ditching the pomp and circumstance traditions that make regular people feel out of place. The last several years have been extremely challenging for most people. We feel strongly that great food, great drinks, and great hospitality are things everyone deserves. Especially you.

We offer a multi course menu and can accommodate the following diets: Omnivore (no dietary restrictions), Pescatarian (vegetarian + seafood), or vegan (no animal products used). With notice, we’re also able to modify many items to be gluten-free. We respectfully ask that further modification requests only be made in cases of serious allergies; we may not be able to accommodate certain dietary restrictions

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Doug Hewitt

From the OpenTable editors: A 2022 New York Times pick for the 50 most exciting restaurants in America, Freya is the place to be for a wildly creative fine-dining experience that feels casual and unpretentious. Executive chef Douglas Hewitt leads a super collaborative team that creates the seasonal menu in unison in the open kitchen. You might find a buñuelo dotted with caviar or lobster tangled in pea tendrils and immediately feel compelled to return so you can discover the latest adds to the menu.

Hank and Maggie were so welcoming and informative. Everything tasted amazing, the menu is very unique. The wine pairings by Abigail was phenomenal and I don’t even like wine.

I’m sorry to write this, but we had a subpar experience. The service was slow and ill informed. The food was “trying” far too hard to be hip. Above all management had little to no warmth. Thoroughly unimpressed.

We went for our Anniversary dinner and were treated like royalty! There was a sweet card waiting for us and a bubbly treat. Service was excellent. The food was exquisite. Each dish was uniquely flavored and prepared perfectly with an excellent balance of flavors (exception was the thicker carrots in the carrot dish). The sage corpse reviver #2 was delicious. We appreciated the attention to detail. We will definitely be back.

Great evening. Did the wine pairing and it was a nice compliment to each of the dishes. Service was top notch. Timing between courses very good.

I had a very nice first experience at Freya. It was our anniversary and we were offered champagne on the house. We were seated right away, and had a beautiful salad, and bread with this amazing home made butter. The food came out pretty quick. Everything was really good. My only issue is they focus a lot on mushrooms if you are vegan/vegetarian, and I'm not the biggest fan of the texture. There was another dish that I didn't like, and they sent out something else for me which was really nice. The staff was nice and attentive. The parking is a little annoying, but that's Detroit in general.

Amazing five-course* tasting menu along with the wine pairing made for an outstanding dining experience! *Plus warm bread and a fantastic, flavorful salad. The five courses were sized just right (not too small); all four of us big eaters at our table were filled and satisfied at the end of the meal. The flavor profiles of each dish were incredible, inventive, and delicious! The pierogies and the brussel sprouts were especially tasty! The staff was friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable about the food and wine. We were surprised that some of the best wines they poured were from Michigan - they did a good job finding top wines and paired them expertly with each course. I'm not always a fan of open kitchens, but this one was attractive and not noisy so it didn't distract from the experience. The decor is a bit minimalistic but tasteful. Dragonfly Bar next door was too cold on a chilly evening and the menu print was too small to read, but the drinks were fantastic! Our group can't wait to come back to try the nine-course chef's tasting menu!

Unbelievable culinary experience, every plate, every bite is extraordinary. The hands down best restaurant in Detroit (and Michigan) and one of the best in America. It's incredible value on top of the world class service and food.

Food was overall too salty. The portions were far too small for the price paid. Save your money and go someplace better.
