Our story begins in the 1940s when Sicilian immigrants Anthony Marullo Sr. and his wife Annie opened their first restaurant in Grand Isle, Louisiana, serving fish, crabs, shrimp, and oysters caught daily in the Gulf. It was here that Anthony Marullo Jr. was born, and taught how to fish the waters that surrounded their barrier reef home. By 1965, the family was selling their fresh seafood in the French Market of New Orleans, and Anthony JR and his wife Barbara decided it was time to introduce Mamma Annie’s dishes to the Big Easy. Moving into the space at Decatur and St. Phillip that is as old as the French Quarter itself, their Creole-style seafood and dishes quickly gained popularity with locals and travelers alike and by 1975 had become a popular mainstay of New Orleans cuisine. Today, brothers, Jude & Anthony Marullo III continue the tradition of serving millions of people from around the world the same from scratch recipes that Annie and Anthony Sr. created almost 80 years ago.

Upon arrival they didn't have our reservation so we were given the next available table which was on the first floor. The ambiance wasn't very welcoming - dirty and not-cleared tables everywhere, the place itself seemed very dirty - I found it rather disgusting. The food is ONLY for those who like fish or seafood - for all others there are not many options (and the options chosen were totally untasteful). Service was very poor, too.

Our hostess was enthused when we arrived however offered to seat us on the balcony, which we were excited for to people watch and take in more of the city during dinner. However, when we got upstairs we were told the server would not serve us out there because it was "too hot"; seeing as I (from the north) had walked miles in 95 degree heat all day, I found it odd that if I was choosing outdoor seating that I would be told no by someone local. Already a strike. The waitress was not very friendly, she was barely enthused or helpful with the menu, she did not offer us specials, or a drink or even welcome us or ask if we were visiting town or locals (we clearly we not locals) so she didn't suggest food or anything. My jambalaya was dry and lacked flavor and my friend's meal, was tasty but not exactly what she wanted or expected. We were not checked on and not offered boxes to take our food. Overall it made a very long day of heat and sight-seeing even longer and really just became a meal of sustenance not experience, unfortunately.

This was a great find and some of the best food I had in NOLA. I'm not an oyster eater, but our server recommended the chargrilled oysters. They were delicious!!!! They weren't chewy or fishy and had great flavor. Our server also recommended the shrimp etouffe so I ordered that. It was fabulous!!! It was spicy but not too spicy and was so flavorful. My friend had the catfish po boy and she loved it. But the best part of our meal was the bread pudding we had for dessert. I order bread pudding any time it's on the menu, and this was the best I've ever had. The white chocolate praline sauce was absolutely divine. I'll definitely eat here anytime I visit NOLA.

Service was lacking. Only one stall for women’s restroom for two floors of restaurant. We were seated promptly when they opened at 11:00. Highlight was the chargrilled oysters, although we ordered a dozen, and there were only 11 on the plate. When we brought this to our servers attention, Gerard, he asked if we wanted a cup of gumbo instead. One of our drink orders was a ketle one double Bloody Mary. When I asked the bartender if they had ketle one, I was told they were out. We were charged for the ketle one and the double. Check your receipts and count your oysters.

Our waitress was awesome. She had fun with us. She was fast and attentive as well. There was an issue with the GM and a bar employee which made us uncomfortable bc it got fairly heated. Food was great and so was the service.

We had a wonderful dinner. Our reservation was ready and we were sat right away. The boiled crawfish were fresh and seasoned just right. The grilled redfish with asparagus and grilled potato wedges, was delicious as well.
