The food was great, drinks were great, but getting there was a struggle. The host stand is not obvious, I had to bother the bar to find out where to wait. The food took a while to arrive. We didn’t get the full hour and a half because of this.
Not sure how the staff plans to handle this in the new location, but it’s was so so so loud. Downstairs was screaming “chug chug chug” to the point where, being on the almost opposite side of the space, I could not hear myself speak.
I really love this place, but the sound needs to come down for me to bring people back.
Great food and excellent service. Couldn’t ask for more.
I LOVED my experience at Essex, the service was awesome the food was awesome, would suggest any time
The service was awful. This is my second time coming to Essex, and both times I was disappointed by the terrible service. The wait was so long to be served. Food was good for the most part.
Our waitress was great, understanding and just beyond attentive. My eggs were a little on the salty end but over brunch at Essex was great, loud but great.
They’re not very accommodating. Some tables are too close together.
Our reservation for was Sunday brunch at noon, we arrived on time and were promptly seated. We chose the brunch option with unlimited mimosas. Our waiter was very attentive and made sure that our drinks were refilled and whether we were happy with our dishes. We each had three different menu choices and all were very good and were served promptly. The bread basket was very good and wasn't really necessary as each of our dishes came with a bread option, the bread was delicious. We would recommend the shrimp with the cheese grits and the pulled BBQ chicken. We did have one incident that could have been handled better. One of the folks in our party slipped and fell on the slippery floor, fortunately they were not seriously hurt. The waiter informed the manager, who did not want to file an accident report (which is required in NYC) and told us we took file a police report if we wanted to, but there was nothing she could do. She left us standing by the bar ans walked again, while the waitstaff had to apologize and made sure the floor was cleaned up.
The noise level was extremely high, as this is not a place to go if you want to have a quiet conversation.
It was the best boozy brunch I have had in the city so far.
Evelyn was the absolute BEST waitress! She made our experience so much fun! We had a 12:30 reservation and didn't get seated until 1 so they gave also gave us a free round of drinks. We would definitely come back.
We had a very large (20+) and staff was very accommodating.
The music was too loud to converse but the food was amazing as always.
Very loud and very slow service but the food was delicious.
Excellent late night dining. Have been here a few times and this was my first time dining at the bar. Spot on service, great crowd and delicious small plates. Love the short rib sliders.
Poor service, was chaotic and server didn’t care to have a conversation or even show enthusiasm
The new spot is a gem! They did add the flatbread on the menu , which was delicious! The watermelon Martinis were very refreshing and the traditional old fashion superb! Great choices on the desserts. We will see u Essex in a month when we come back to NY.
I went there for a late brunch, showed up on time, and received a message from Open Table asking if I was there. If that’s not an indicator of the service and quality of the place, I don’t know what else you need to know to understand how bad it was.
Too loud to talk to one another, the food took a long time to come out, and the french fries were cold.
The kitchen took over an hour to give us our appetizers, letting us know that 3 items we requested were no longer available (burratta, calamari) long after we already ordered them. Disappointing, then another hour waiting for our entrees. The mussels had a weird smell/taste and the Brussel Sprouts were only in shavings/the skin of them. The steak was rare after ordering Medium Well. The waiter tried to compensate but overall wasn’t worth the money or the travel over there. Would not recommend. Really let me down for a Valentine’s Day dinner. Will not return.
I went to Essex on Valentine’s Day with two of my friends. The restaurant received great reviews so figured we’d try it out. We first asked for three espresso martinis. The waitress took our order and disappeared for fifteen minutes. When she came back, she said that the restaurant recently opened and the bartender never made an espresso martini before. We tasted our drinks and realized it was missing Baileys so she politely took our drinks back. She came back another ten minutes later saying that the order of Baileys never came in and offered to make us other drinks. She recommended a chocolate martini but after my friend decided to give that a shot, the waitress came back saying they couldn’t make those either because there was no Baileys. We ordered cosmos instead. My friend and I ordered steak that was suppose to come with creamed spinach. Instead, it came with a pepper. When we spoke to the waitress about this, she apologized and said they changed the menu last minute and she forgot to tell us. We got the check and it ended up being $150 for three people (2 rounds of drinks). It took us over an hour to get our first round of drinks and nothing was refunded. Although our waitress was nice and friendly, we were disappointed that nothing was done for us.
Loved the lamb chops we are from Australia and have missed them while on holiday.
The menu and food was good. Our server was dismissive and rude. First time this has ever happened to us there
My friends and I had a fabulous experience at Essex last night. The space is beautiful and the atmosphere was great - fun music and ambience for a Saturday night out but not too loud or crowded. Great and friendly service, the chef personally brought out our desserts and said hello. We shared several appetizers - cheese plate (love the proscuitto chips!), kale salad, cauliflower, shishito peppers and brussels crisps - and all were delicious. My vegetarian friend especially appreciated the wide variety of vegetarian options. Desserts were amazing - chocolate mousse, espresso semifreddo, passionfruit pannacotta and 3 different sorbets. We had 2 bottles of excellent wine that was very reasonably priced. Hadn't planned to but ended up staying for 5 hours because it was such a great place to hang out and the service never wavered once we'd finished eating and weren't ordering more - attentive but not pushy. Will definitely recommend to family and friends and go back soon.
