Located in the heart of downtown, The Esquire Tavern is the oldest bar on the San Antonio Riverwalk, opened the year, month and day that Prohibition was repealed. Tending bar in the early days was a highly prized and much sought after craft. Bar keeps then created many of their own syrups, mixes and concoctions and used the freshest of juices with the intention of serving the best products. We at the Esquire have taken a serious approach to the old world of bartending and spun it with a modern twist. Combining classic techniques and new world flavors and culinary concepts, our goal is to lead and set San Antonio's emerging cocktail culture on the map.

The family and I have enjoyed several meals here previously, but this last was a huge step in the wrong direction. Prices are all up markedly. The food was poorly prepared (burgers, all ordered medium rare, all came to the table well done). They changed up the burger toppings, now with egregious amounts of shaved raw onion (I love onion, and this was a painful amount). Side salad was strangely bland and flavorless. Our server, when he could be bothered to check on us, gave the impression he thought we should be ordering more than we were. Perhaps that's why he tried to overcharge us? Atmosphere was lacking, with a table of drunken, overly loud boomers screaming at one another across the table. I'd love to give The Esquire the benefit of the doubt, given how pleasant past experiences have been, but there was just too much wrong, much of it down to less tasty yet more expensive food and poor service. Too many other options to chose from to waste another outing here.

If you're planning a night out at the Aztec Theater, dining at The Esquire Tavern is an absolute must! This historic gem offers a perfect blend of ambiance, flavor, and top-notch service that sets the stage for an unforgettable evening. The menu is a delightful mix of innovative cocktails and mouthwatering dishes that cater to a wide range of palates. I highly recommend the charcuterie board to start, paired with one of their expertly crafted cocktails. The mains are equally impressive—everything is prepared with attention to detail and bursting with flavor. The location is ideal, just a short stroll from the Aztec Theater, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxed meal before the show. The Esquire's vintage charm and vibrant atmosphere really get you in the mood for a night of entertainment. Whether you're a local or visiting San Antonio, The Esquire Tavern is an outstanding choice for a pre-show dining experience!

The menu was limited, and even though the waitress was very nice and helpful, it took her a while to come by our table, even though we were the only people there.

It was fine. Food was room temperature when it came out. Tasted good and drinks were great. Not impressed by service. Server seemed to know what he was doing but was pretty rude to me and my guests.

taste, libation, space, music, service. They hit every mark. We ordered a variety of items from the menu and the bar. The craft cocktails are amazing. The downstairs bar is exactly what San Antonio needs. It doesn’t feel touristy. It feels speakeasy comfort. Our 3 teens loved it as much as the adults. I wish I had an Esquire in New Orleans…that should tell you everything you need to know.

Nice little menu. You pay for the location. I rate it 4 stars out of 4 for a 4 star restaurant. It's not a 5 star restaurant and that's ok.

We went right before a concert at the Aztec theater and it was so good. The drinks were on point! Liz our server was super nice super knowledgeable and took the time to check on us pretty consistently. Will definitely go again.
