  • Neighborhood gem
The Elysian restaurant in Los Angeles invites diners to experience a unique celebration of food, community and art. The restaurant offers a communal feel where guests are treated like family and allowed to linger over dinner and cocktails. Owner and chef of Elysian, David Throne, creates semi-Mediterranean dishes that include fresh California ingredients. First course offerings like young broccoli and smoked mussels prepare the palette for the main dishes. As it was a nice summer night we sat outside but checked inside first, and the ambiance was cool. We'll go back.

What a relaxing, delicious, retreat 1000 miles from whatever world resides outside of that yard. We had delicious specialty crafted cocktails which helped meet our RDA in fruits and vegetables. We sampled most of the menu with our group of 5 and found them all delicious. Cheers to Elysian!

I just went to Elysian for dinner last week. The staff was wonderful - hostess and waitress. The design of the space is exactly what I love. The food was fine, but nothing spectacular. I love that they have a full bar and I look forward to going to back to have a few.

An utterly delightful spot; appealing and interesting decor, communal tables allowing for sharing the joy of the dishes arriving, the food is interesting and fresh of take as much as of ingredients. I've been there twice now and each time promise myself to come back just to sit in the sweet lazy lounge and indulge in toasting with one of their amazing cocktails. I am eagerly awaiting the summer months when I am pretty sure they will use some of their desert cool outside space to feed more of us.

My second visit to Elysian for brunch was as delightful as the first. This time there was a crowd waiting and eating inside and out. The kitchen and staff were efficient and consistent in the preparation and delivery of an enjoyable meal.

Elysian is my favorite restaurant in Los Angeles. Tucked away in an industrial area near the LA River, you enter the restaurant by passing a wooden gate and wandering through a bamboo oasis. On sunny days or warm evenings, you can have a drink or eat in the garden/patio area. Inside, the restaurant feels more like a gallery--spacious, minimal, contemporary, with concrete floors, art on the walls, open kitchen. If you have been there more than once, Bethany, the hostess, will recognize you and greet you warmly. And while it still feels like they are working out some service kinks--I sometimes get the feeling that the servers have never waited tables before--the friendliness and food more than make up for the occasional oversights. Chef David Thorne's cooking--seasonal, local California-Mediterranean cuisine--is what keeps me coming back. Befitting the setting, each plate is like a work of art, but never fussy, just delicious. The portions aren't huge, but because they are so balanced and flavorful, they satisfy. Make sure you get on their mailing list. The weekly emails are creative and funny and will entice you with a photo of the week's new dish and what to expect on the menu. Although it's only open Thursday-Friday for dinner and Sunday brunch, I've made it part of my weekly routine. It feels like being invited to a meal with friends, friends who live in a beautiful loft and just happen to be great artists and cooks.
