El Perol Restaurant is a family-owned eatery in San Rafael that serves generous portions of homemade Peruvian dishes made from scratch with the freshest ingredients and authentic herbs and spices. We were located in SF’s Mission District for two decades. A fire closed our Mission business but we're delighted to be back serving the San Rafael community along with old customers who drive here from the city. Gustavo will greet you when you arrive and your dinner will be lovingly prepared by his sister chef Nancy, who has 20 years of experience and delights meat eaters, fish lovers and vegetarians alike. Some of Nancy’s most requested dishes are Lomo Saltado, Seco de Cordero, Jalea, Pescado a lo Macho, Cau Cau, and Aji de Gallina. Try Peruvian beer with your meal, and end your meal with mouthwatering Peruvian desserts such as Alfajores, Helado de Lucuma, Crema Volteada and more. Visit us to experience authentic Peruvian dishes cooked the way our grandparents meant them to be.

I hadn't been to this restaurant before, and we were there on a Sunday night, so I wonder if this was the regular chef. I've been to Peru many times, over several decades, and I was a bit disappointed in such bland renditions of standard dishes. Not unpleasant, just uninteresting.

Decent, but not fancy. A bit cold and loud, not what I was expecting. Was looking for a spot to have a business discussion over dinner before seeing a play. Ceviche was good, other dishes ok, shrimp and mussels over cooked. Earnest, friendly staff, ok food. Might be good for lunch

What a wonderful celebration dinner we had! We were a party of 15, on a Tuesday evening, with online reservations made Monday evening. El Perol followed up with a phone call on Tuesday & we walked in at 6:30 (stragglers til 7) to a setup of 3 tables connected & down one whole side of the lovely restaurant. No doubt as to where we belonged! We were seated & ordering quickly, as we had to be elsewhere by 8:30. The food was excellent (I had fillet pescadero w/beans & rice) & then received a birthday dessert so tasty I'm already looking forward to next year! The survey asked about noise level. I suspect we were the noisiest group that evening, so don't rely on my judgement for that. Thanks to the staff & my friends for a fantastic dinner!

This is a nice informal place to get Peruvian cuisine. The food is well prepared and not pretentious. Also, large portions can be hard to finish.
