Very fine gourmet Mexican food
Have to admit being let down by the experience here. With the restaurant being ranked so high on Austin Eater, and with the reputation it has, the food was just sub-par. Supposedly known for their mole and Oaxacan food, we were left perplexed by what we were served. The mole was moderately flavorful, but watery. The duck was bland and chewy, only becoming barely palatable by trying to drench it in the accompanying mole. A tough feat, considering how watery said mole was. The Queso Fundido was fine, but, it's difficult to mess up melted cheese with sausage on top.
High marks, however, for the in-house made corn tortillas, which were excellent. But, when tortillas and queso are the highlights of a meal, you know there's something amiss.
Great, complex molé served with perfectly cooked duck breast. Ceviche very good as was the queso fundido con chorizo. Pepita flan delicate and perfectly done.
Unfortunately this location will be closing November 16, but we will definitely go to the South Lamar location. Excellent interior Mexican food & great service!
The guacamole was divine, and the mole delicious. While dessert does not seem to be their strong point, the chocolate cake lacked flavor, everything was delicious. Our server was pleasant, informative, and attentive. We had a wonderful experience and highly recommend.
The short ribs were unbelievable.
The food was delicious and different. The spicing of the orange mole had depth and tremendous flavor. The pork was delicious as well. A great (and gluten-free friendly) dining experience
Thank you for great dinner with great hospitality!
We LOVE El Naranjo! So excited to share it with our friends. Amazing food, great service and love the atmosphere.
Delightful meal with amazing ingredients. The best Mexican restaurant in Austin
Outstanding in all respects -- the mole is excellent, good margaritas, sancerre wine!
Great food in a great location.
Great food from a world-class chef. Would have like a few more “lunch” options on the “brunch” menu.
For such a highly touted restaurant, a huge disappointment. Service was very good as were the tuna tostadas and huiltacoche empanadas. The mole was adequate but considering the chef is from Oaxaca, also a disappointment. The nightly special, a delicious national specialty Chilies en Nogada, was truly lousy. While warned the dish would be served cold, the literally raw as opposed to typically roasted Chile was inedible. If you’re after upscale Mexican cuisine, look elsewhere and avoid this place completely.
Food was outstanding - authentic style interior Mexican food. Lucia was our waitress and very helpful on drink and food selection. I would highly recommend ceviche for an appetizer and the enchiladas verdes and the street tacos.
Appetizers better than meal. Happy Hour Margarita good.
We had a great time
We were a group of 5. We had a reservation and were seated on time, although our party was incomplete. Our waitstaff was knowledgeable and friendly. The drinks and food were very good. I like the reusable non-plastic bags used for take out and the containers. My only issue was when the waitperson offered bread ("conchas") she failed to mention they were $4 apiece. Usually bread is on the house if it is offered and not ordered. I didn't say anything about it but was irked at the additional, silent $12 charge. Otherwise I think this restaurant is a jewel and I'm happy it's still in business and doing well.
Nickel & Dimed!! We ordered cochinita pibil, delicious, HOWEVER, it only comes w/2 corn tortillas, mind you, there's enough meat for 4 large tacos. We ask for 2 more tortillas and salsa. $1 PER tortilla and $1.50 for salsa. REALLY?? The charge for tortillas I'd be able to look past, IF the order initially came w/4 tortillas. But Come On!!!!
Love El Naranjo and loved our waitress and loved the food and margaritas!!
Great restaurant , authentic Mexican cuisine, the only real Mexican food in the area. The food is extraordinary ,great service and very nice atmosphere .
We highly recommend it .
Authentic Oaxacan dishes prepared lovingly and served enthusiastically by caring and friendly staff. The moles were sensuous on the palate.
Located in an old house, the place has the ambiance of a home where one feels like a regular special guest.
Great cocktails, food, and service!
Everything from our drinks/apps/dinner/dessert was incredible!! Wish I could remember our server’s name...she was a rock star!!! Definitely will be back next time we travel to Austin!!!
Slow service that evening. Food is too expensive for what you get. Light was flickering above table during all of dinner. Mexican food is a competitive market in Austin. Need to be better.
The food is delicious! We’ve been there several times and it never disappoints.
Creative menu, fresh ingredients, superbly executed.
The food and service were outstanding! I had their version of eggs Benedict, which were on a gordita and soooooo good! We will be back soon!
Food, service, and ambiance made for one of the best meals and dining experiences I've had. The owners and/of managers of El Naranjo should be used as an example of how to run a restaurant. I cannot imagine how I could have had a better evening .
Went for the mole. Well worth the wait. Had dark mole on duck. Spicey mole on enchiladas. Both excellent.
very good food. Maybe a little pricey, but the ceviche is spectacular and everything is prepared with great care and taste. Staff is very courteous and helpful.
This is definitely a place you’ll want to visit frequently. You can tell by the quality of their food that you can’t go wrong with whatever you order. The chilaquiles were the best I’ve ever had. Can’t wait to go back to try the rest!
It was good, entrees were a bit skimpy for the price. Great margaritas! The organica was delish!
My wife and I went here early on a Saturday evening for a date night. We had the ceviche, cochinita pibil, and sea bass. They were all delicious and perfectly prepared. But for my frugal nature, I'd be giving this place 5-stars. I'm spoiled by joints like Taco Deli that serve ridiculously good food in a taco for 25% of the price.
Another slight knock is their copious use of mirrors in the dining area. I caught too many reflections of myself to really enjoy the evening.
Birthday celebration. Our waitress made it special
All the food was superb and fresh. Guac was great, ceviche was fresh and good. Main dishes were tops.
What are the 7 sacred chilies?...
Delicious! I would come back again for sure!!! Our waiter was great. The ceviche was amazing and the crab tostadas were out of this world! I only said the noise level loud because the group I was in was a bachelorette party and we were a little noisy!
Food wasn’t great. Wine was terrible. Service was good
