We have been there often. But last night the food, tapenade were all too salty. String Ben’s were way over done.
We were celebrating my husband’s birthday with another couple.Food was superb. The reason I am not giving it five stars is our waiter brought our salads and main course all together. Never even thought of saying “can we have the salads first”. Ridiculous. Took away the feeling of eating at an easy pace. but once again the food was fantastic however for an expensive meal expected serving protocol to go with it.
D&Co really stepped it up in the kitchen. We’ve been several times and the food is always good, but this time it was outstanding. The branzino was spectacular! Love the new staff and the added take-home market options. Can’t wait for next time.
superb food & excellent wines, cocktails & beer
the owner is charming, helpful, quick & extremely bright
the welcome & service & quality of the food very much like an excellent restaurant in italy
Our first time back in Berkeley in two years. Food was excellent but the restaurant was filled to capacity including outdoor tables. Service was very slow.
Lovely interior space, 3 or 4 daily specials (even for lunch), lovely service, just wonderful. Everyone speaks Italian. Terrific pasta made in house. We will go back!
Possibly one of the very best true Italian restaurant in the Bay Area, if not the best.
BTW, I was born and grew up in Italy and I have no interests in the restaurant, just in case anyone would think I am biased. Enjoy it. Luca
good neighborhood spot. some innovative dishes. the descriptions of the food were sometimes incomplete.
My wife and I were enjoying our 28th anniversary with a stay in Berkeley — a city we have grown to love over many years. We decided to try Donato & Co. for dinner. We arrived early and stepped to the bar. We were pleasantly surprised to find a very knowledgeable and creative bar staff, well versed in Italian spirits. We tried a few of their twists on the classics, and were duly impressed. We also met some very lovely locals, and through conversation it slipped that I am an opera singer — which means I have spent more than a few evenings in Italian bars and gastropubs around the world and am often asked to sing something. Two drinks in, when asked, I chose a small section from the middle of Nessun Dorma (Turandot) took the hand of the lovely lady sitting next to us, and offered my rendition — shutting down the house if only for a moment. Hopefully we made this lovely lady’s night, and I would note that the team was gracious and fun!
From my perspective, Donato & Co. is an authentic Italian find in Berkeley. As is my custom, we asked the staff what they believe the kitchen does very well — and we were not disappointed. They make on site, a beautiful ricotta found in several of their pastas and appetizers. We tried three appetizers and two pasta dishes — one being Chef Gianluca’s special of the night. Each item was deftly prepared and balanced perfectly. It was important to make sure that all elements of each dish were enjoyed together to find that perfect balance of sale, grassi, acido e calore — and Chef Gianluca certainly knocked it out that night.
As we wrapped our meal, we learned that the staff wanted to wish the Chef a happy birthday at the end of the night. They asked me to join, and a newfound fratello and I gave our little Italian duet of tanti auguri, with a few high notes tossed in. A truly enjoyable night in Berkeley — great food in a place with a great local vibe! I would definitely recommend a visit.
Delicious food, very good service and easy parking. Appetizers were terrific and pasta exceptional. Good drink and wine selection. A very enjoy able evening.
This was a Saturday lunch.
Food was very good and good value too.
Our server was obviously new and seemed unsure about the menu leading to one goof in ordering but she fixed it.
We liked the house made pastas and the wine by the glass selections were nicely curated and fairly priced.
The atmosphere was casual and very friendly.
We would definitely return when in Berkeley.
Really great menu - quality ingredients - excellent prep - friendly service
Always excellent food and atmosphere
We were a foursome, had the table all evening, and it was lots of fun eating and talking. The food is always fun and good.
Fun time with friends! Ate the appetizers and were full after 2! Very affordable.
This place has such a wonderful feeling to it, and the food is clearly made with care to bring the best of Italian cuisine in fresh and imaginative splendor. I only wish we lived closer to go more regularly.
Family dinner with the kids and grandkids. Great service, delicious food and a good value!
I had my birthday celebration at Donato's with my family - 6 of us. The service and ambience was very nice. We enjoyed drinking wine, chatting and the food. The food was well prepared and they give you plenty so we were able to share around. The appetizer with the bacalao fish was excellent. We had pasta, fish, squid and pork chops and all were done nicely. Our server was very attentive without being obtrusive. I even got a pana cota desser with a candle on it. Thank you for making my birthday lunch a nice event. Definitely recommending and of course, coming back.
Yummy, creative and ample dishes, perfect for tasting and sharing.
Fabulous desserts, as usual! Love the bread and olive tapenade. Very good service. Not thrilled with the CICCHETTI. Liked the sole a lot, not the tuna so much. Like the ambiance a lot! Really interesting and unusual menu!!
Great food nice service owners are nice people
The food is always delicious and the staff are friendly, engaging, and on point.
They post a “suggested” time limit for table occupancy. Which are not unreasonable. Nonetheless waiter did rush us to order. I ordered a special prix fixee but didn’t take the time to review and question as much as I usually do, wound up disappointed. Suggest taking greater care here selecting. Food was mostly good but a la cart better
Wowee! Black Truffle Festival was so delicious. I hope they have a Chianti Festival or a Branzino a Festival!!!
Superb black truffle special menu. But all of the other offerings coming out of the kitchen looked equally attractive.
My steak was cooked perfectly and accompanied by a super yummy green sauce with rosemary in it. The wine list offers excellent Italian options to complement the food. We’ll definitely be going back to try more dishes.
We enjoyed everything about our experience! The pace of our meal was relaxed. Our pre-dinner cocktails were delicious! My mom and i enjoyed d a classic margarita, my dad had the French side car and my husband had the aviation. They were all done beautifully! We shared the fried risotto balls, which were delicious! We each had a salad… all incredibly fresh. My dad had the pork chop, my mom had the chicken, my husband and I had pasta - perfectly cooked just like it is in Italy! The service was attentive but we never felt rushed, the ambiance on the street was delightful - with the people watching, heat lamps between each table and just a wonderful evening in Berkeley! We had a great experience and will definitely be back!
Excellent food, good service, nice ambiance. Recommend this place.
Food was so good! Only reason I felt the ambiance was lower was because we were sitting outside but the inside looked lovely. Definitely recommend
Father’s Day lunch- just lovely
Authentic Italian food
Great food. The manager is charming.
Everyone that arrived after us got their order taken first. The time between our starters to our entrees was about 20-35 minutes.
We were never checked up on after receiving our food.
Our water was never refilled, nor were we offered a chance to order a 2nd bottle of wine.
Food was a bit salty but still tasty.
We were seated outdoors and during the middle of our meal, water from a pipe unleashed right behind my foot and poured into the street.
I know there may be issues with staffing due to covid and preparing for opening, but it seemed like we were the only table to experience this as I watched everyone else get checked up on and taken care of .
We have been going here before and through the pandemic. Glad to see they are back open and it is getting busy. Everything is delicious.
Terrific food. Great service.
Perfect outdoor setting for lunch in the sunshine. Food was delicious and service was excellent.
Donato has come out of the lockdown with its fine food and service at their pre-Covid high standard. The chef continues to provide us with inventive versions of classic Italian food. The wait staff is always courteous and attentive. It is great to have indoor dining back.
Today is the second day that California reopened after the COVID19 lock down. It is a festive day, one to be celebrated at a restaurant, any restaurant, with good friends we have not seen in a year. We picked Donato and instead of feeling elated we came away frustrated and disappointed. The waiter, one suspects, would have been grateful to be over the California closure and at least give a hint at being happy. Nothing doing. We arrived at 5 and were seated at our table. Seated, and seated, and seated. Finally, the server arrived as though ready to pick a fight, as though this was the last place he wanted be. Unhelpful with the selection of a wine, he brought what seemed to be an infinitesimal pour in a huge glass. When we pointed out that it look miserly he growled that it was 5 ounces but would check with the manager to see what could be done. That was the last we heard. He was unequally unhelpful with suggestions from the menu and would not budge at a request for a pasta substitute for faro. The food was good but, as other reviewers have noted, hardly filled a quarter of the serving plate. There seems to be something going on at Donato about serving beverages and food in oversized service. Not sure what the point is but it only leads to disappointment. Hubris? Hardly warranted. All this said, it was wonderful to reunite with old friends, all of us crawling out of the horrors of the past year. Want to be with old friends at a place where you feel welcome and want to celebrate something? Find another place.
The food was delicious and we also received great service. Overall we had an excellent experience
Fresh ingredients, imaginative preparations and very Italian feeling in every way.
