   For my wife's birthday we decided on a short staycation in downtown San Antonio. We booked the Kimpton Santo due to location and the fact that Dean's Steak & Seafood was located in the hotel. Dean's seems to present itself as an upscale/fine dining restaurant. In reality this is far from the truth. For the dinner experience the only things good were the Parker House rolls and a couple of cocktails. After that it was downhill. We split a colossal shrimp cocktail and you needed steak knives to be able to cut the large shrimp into bite sized pieces. They were like rubber. My wife got the Dover Sole and I got the broiled jumbo lobster tail. Both were severely over cooked with the lobster needing a sharp steak knife to cut. I could only eat about 1/3 of it and that was difficult. We thought dessert would be better but both the key lime pie and the carrot cake were sub standard. The waiter was also lacking in experience and knowledge as he was no help at all describing the dishes. Also, when I originally booked the restaurant I wanted a 6:00 or 6:30 time but nothing was available until later than desired so we had to take a 5:30 slot. The evening we dined the restaurant was well below half full so there were numerous times available. Very strange. Since we were staying at the hotel we decided to do breakfast the next morning on the assumption that surely they could handle something as simple as breakfast. We were wrong. My wife got the thick bacon Benedict and I got the Dean's American. All our eggs were way over cooked and her bacon was over a half inch thick of mostly under cooked fat. Neither of us could finish. Even the coffee was odd tasting. Dean's was an absolute disaster; one of the worst dining experiences we've had. This restaurant is obviously counting on tourists only as it wouldn't last a week on the north side of town having to compete with other upscale places.

   The staff were friendly, professional, and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was absolutely scrumptious and top notch! The ambience was beautiful, modern, and romantic for a date night. I will definitely go back!

   Overall good experience. Poor marks for honoring the reservation thru Opentable. If a customer is late, you are liable. But when you have to remind them 3 freaking times that you had reservations for almost 45 minutes prior, that is completely unacceptable.

   We wanted to try a new restaurant on our anniversary so we made an early reservation at Dean’s. We started with a martini and a half dozens oysters. We followed up with a split Wedge Salad, steak, and Dover Sole. The twice-baked potato was more than we needed, but hey, we were celebrating. We also enjoyed a bottle of French Bordeaux. Every thing was delicious and our server, David, was terrific.

    A thoroughly underwhelming experience. The shrimp and seafood were inconsistent in both texture and cleanliness, and I was appalled to find a hair in the sauce, completely unacceptable. The drinks were watered down, clearly prepared well before being served. Service throughout the evening was inattentive and careless. The wait staff came across as unprofessional, playfighting with each other instead of focusing on guests—in front of guests! The manager was visibly on their phone during dinner service, and the hostess stand was in disarray. Appetizers were ordered arrived at different times, and my entree and side were served separately, disrupting the flow of the meal. For a place that’s supposed to deliver a refined dining experience, the lack of coordination and professionalism was absurd. 100% disappointing when all I wanted was a nice dinner.
