About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Great for scenic views
Dean Banks’ fine dining restaurant is located within the historic Pompadour restaurant at The Caledonian Hotel, Princes Street.

The restaurant embraces the same ethos as Haar Restaurant, St Andrews and showcase the best of land and sea. Table cloths line the tables in a ‘wedding cake of a room’.

The menu constantly evolves, reflecting the seasons. Dean heroes our land and seas, producing a menu which showcases Scotland’s natural resources. This includes the very best local produce from Edinburgh, Fife and beyond. Foraged seasonal produce is preserved to enjoy the fruits of Summer year-round. Each guest will enjoy a sensory experience like no other, which will leave a lasting memory.

Dean’s passion for food is truly reflected in each course which will take you on a journey through his past travels and experiences.

We had a fantastic Set menu with wine pairings. Very tasty and beautiful dishes. Well chosen wines, served by really nice and competent personnel. And then the room, loved the atmosphere.

This is the second time I have been to sample the tasting menu by Dean Banks and standards have dropped. We were the only the diners there for most of the Saturday evening we visited the restaurant. The food was not nearly as good as our previous visit. One or two of the dishes were tasty with great flavours but others were a bit tasteless. We probably will not return.

I am disappointing regarding my recent dining experience at the restaurant. I had booked a dinner reservation for 7:00 PM. However, it was nearly 8:00 PM by the time the first course was served. This level of delay is extremely frustrating and, quite frankly, unacceptable. It left me questioning the purpose of making a reservation at a specific time if the meal is not going to begin anywhere near that hour. Furthermore, the structure of the tasting menu was disappointing. Although the offer was advertised as a 50% discount on your dinner tasting menu, the actual dishes served did not align with what was advertised. For instance, the venison course was replaced, and overall, the menu felt more like your lunch tasting menu (which I understand is priced at £45), with the only notable addition being a piece of bread. The communal table arrangement also detracted from the experience, especially given the price point and the promise of a premium dinner. Ultimately, I felt that my evening was wasted — both in terms of time and expectations. .

Dean Banks deserves his Michelin star soon. We had the tasting menu. Food creative, well presented and above all wonderful flavours. Each course left us looking forward to the next. Front of house staff knowledgeable and friendly, attentive without being overbearing. Drinks pairing was imaginative and not just limited to wines. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and would definitely recommend.

Went for lunch on a Saturday. We were the only table for most of the meal, until one other table arrived. Nice restaurant and staff were nice. Food was tasty but served a bit cool and it was slightly slow (given we were the only table). Overall fairly good.

The place is beautiful. Had booked this for our 40th wedding anniversary. I was not happy with my venison it came out cooked blue some people like meat cooked blue, but i dont so i returned it to the kitchen and asked for it to be cooked medium. It came back exactly the same, and cold. So I just gave it to my husband who loves blue/raw meat. But they did give us 2 glasses of wine. Also things had changed on the menu and the waiters didn’t know anything about it. So I did feel disappointed as I did expect better from a Dean Banks restaurant
