Welcome to De Rican Chef! We are a family-owned authentic Puerto Rican restaurant. Proudly serving Hampton roads since 2005. We take pride in our dishes, and everything is cooked fresh. For this reason, we do not always have all items on menu available. Items available depends on season and availability. Due to short staffing and/climate we will not always be open on our normally scheduled times. My experience was ok not the best. I’ve been to the other location and tho this one seem to have a better presentation the service was a mess. The waiter was new and was not knowledgeable about the menu. I had to continuously point to the menu so he knew what I was asking for. Omg we asked for to go boxes and the top did not fit. So they gave us heavy duty black tape. We did have a large party with 2 separate waitresses and it’s unfortunate our food did not come out together it was a mess. Apparently gratuity is included in the bill and I tipped them. Unfortunately for the service that was given and had I known I would have rather not tipped. It was an overall mess. I will stick to going to the holland location. I drive 2 hrs just for authentic food and was disappointed about the service. Maybe some coaching idk I just was disappointed.

De Rican At The Beach succeeds in featuring some of the more hard-to-find Puerto Rican dishes including pasteles, alcapurria, specialty empanadas, mofongo and trifongo. We visited twice on our recent trip to Virginia Beach because both the food and craft cocktails were so good that we were thinking about it the whole trip and just HAD to go back before we left! We are a family with Puerto Rican heritage and are both exposed to and cook the food. Despite this, we found this restaurant to be exceptional! P.S. order the shrimp trifongo with garlic sauce!

Tried to give them a second chance after a bad experience a while back-- this one was worse. Waiter was awkward and didn't seem to know how to do his job. One of our glasses still had lipstick on it. Empanadas were clearly not cooked there, they looked like they came out of the freezer. The alleyway next to where we were sitting has a nice mural but is constantly filled with the cars of drivers picking up takeout orders, so you can't even enjoy that.

The food was very delicious and served piping hot. The establishment was very beautiful as well. Our waiter was not the best. We came in prior to other customers and they’d received their food, eaten and left before we received ours. Outside of that everything was great. 4/5 star recommendation

Always great food, ambiance, and service. Very cool vibe. Our toddler loves the bright murals and lively music! We are repeat customers whenever we’re in town.

What a great place. We were welcomed enthusiastically and our server arrived promptly. It was obvious they were short staffed, like so many other places, but she did her best. Drinks were cold and made well, the cubano was one of the best I've had, the bread crisp, the ham and pork tender. The plaintain chips and dip was a perfect app. We will return.
