The Spatzle with Scallops was excellent. Beer selection not so great. Service was rather slow.

we were late for our reservation due to traffic but they got us seated and served quickly. Great friendly and informed service - excellent recommendations on food and wine. We made it to our show in plenty of time and will do this again.

Currant Brasserie in the Hotel Sofia is our favorite place for dinner before an event at the Civic Center. It begins with the convenient valet parking which is only $5 for 3 hours. The Civic Center is a 5 minute walk. We've found the wait staff to be friendly, well informed about the menu and great at getting you out in time for the concert. Interesting, not overwhelming menus. I had porcini encrusted sea scallops served over risotto. The scallops were good, if a little over cooked; but the risotto was out of this world. Been to Currant twice and had two good experiences. Would definitely dine there again. One downside is the noise level.

This restaurant is my 1st choice when I'm planning a dinner or brunch combined with a play or performance at the nearby Spreckels, Lyceum, or Balboa Theaters. The food is always outstanding, with excellent wine offerings (even by the glass), and the wait staff are friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. I like to sit outside best, and enjoy the quieter, more intimate setting.

This place is a great illustration of how badly we need more pre-theatre dinner choices near the Civic. It's the closest place to eat before a show, and I guess they figure the patrons are going to come no matter what, so they don't have to bother with quality. Note to owner- slow service is always bad, but when your customers need to make a curtain, it's just unacceptable. Non-existent service. Food mediocre at best. I will not go back here again, unless just to have a drink at the bar. Even then probably not, since the noise level makes it impossible to have a conversation.

We came here last night for dinner and were so disappointed. The service was extremely slow and disjointed. We saw our waitress once and then she promptly forgot about us. I myself had to go to the bar to find out where our drinks were. The wrong meals were served at completely different times. Food was cold and unappetizing. Just horrible, will never return.

My wife and I had dinner at Currant on Friday night before The Book of Mormon, and the place was full, service was fantastic even with the theatre crowd rush. The staff made sure they asked each table if they were attending the theatre event to insure that service was prompt and accurate. We go to Currant every time we are visiting San Diego from Oklahoma.

The food was awesome. No complaints. However, they were serving a course meal that day, and when we left we were still a bit hungry. Maybe if they added a side that fills you up more (like potatoes and rice) would have been even better. Overall, great cooking!
