Currant American Brasserie
Food was average. Had the steak. Asked for medium, received well done. Service staff was attentive.
I will give them another chance at some point, but the baked Brie came out cold, soup was not hot like soup should be and my fish was over cooked. Maybe it was because it was a Tuesday and they had the new guys on the grill but for that kind of money I would expect things to come out properly cooked.
Luis was a fantastic server everything was perfect
Tons of potential, just a little choppy on the service side and food quality could use a bump. Cool, cozy spot!
The service was great, but they’ve changed the menu compared to what they have online. They don’t have all the same food for brunch, no longer have their dog friendly menu, and no longer do bottomless mimosas. I got the eggs benedict and it was good and my friends appeared to enjoy their food as well. Our pup was bummed to not get her pupperoni pizza but otherwise everything was fine. I don’t know that I’ll take friends there if they’re visiting, but maybe go back with local friends.
Steak frites was extremely tasty and a large portion - we would definitely order it again
We've been to Currant many times in the past, but this time was a disappointment. Drinks took too long to arrive. (My wife's Bloody Mary didn't come with a straw. That's become common, with the local no-plastic-straw law. But, when I asked for a straw, the server said they didn't carry them--and this is a restaurant with a busy bar. Still, no real big deal. But the drink hadn't been stirred, so all the alcohol was on the bottom and all the mix at the top. I then had to ask for a stirrer. Much too complicated.) Our mains took a very long time to arrive--about an hour after we arrived. When I asked for the bill, the server told me that their computers were down, so he had to go into the attached hotel to process the charge. When I checked the bill, there were two fairly expensive items included that we hadn't ordered.
Love this place. Very convenient to go to dinner before seeing a Broadway show at the Civic Theatre. Great Happy Hour wine and the food is always great!
Try the Sangria....delicious paired with the Brie appetizer. The Brie is presented in a pool of red pepper and honey to be spread on baguette rounds. The Caesar salad and steak with truffle-parmesan fries were a perfect combination.
Our party was seated immediately and drink service began as soon as we sat down. Servers were friendly and helpful when we asked about what they suggested. Food was phenomenal and worth every penny we paid.
Same consistent good service at lunch as I always experience. The menu was a bit limited, particularly for someone with gluten or dietary restrictions, but has some great options.
I always visit Currant when in San Diego and never disappointed
We ate outside so ambiance and noise were hard to evaluate. The table was immediately adjacent to a plant barrier that separates pedestrian traffic from the diners, which made the area dark and gloomy. The noise level was ambient traffic, which was not heavy on a Sunday morning. The ham croissant sandwich looked lonely on the plate and the mimosa came in a stemless wine glass that was half full.
Good food but limited wine selection. Needs to improve the service.
The staff at the restaurant were very nice and always checked on us to make sure we were doing great. The waiter was very kind and always refilled our drinks on us right away. The food came out quick and was amazing. I can’t wait to be back!
Excellent food. Fair prices. Fantastic personal service. Great place to eat whenever you’re downtown for a concert or a show.
Food was excellent. Desserts were disappointing.
The food was excellent, I had the salmon. We were there at 3:30 after the theater so we had the place to ourselves.
Once again I’m disappointed by the lack of service here. I stopped coming here over a yr ago and see the issues continued. Place didn’t look clean, menus dirty.
Play night not enough staff placed our order right away still 4O min late getting to us. Salad not split, popcorn came after salad waited for dinner had to inquire why it was delayed due to one of the orders which was a burger folks next to us got their right away after ordering we rush eating our food to make the play. Just a sad beginning to the play.
Dinner was delicious (Salmon Salad) and the popcorn is over the top. Great place to go before the theatre.
Food was good. Our waiter was not friendly and seemed condescending. Tainted our experience.
Gave it 3 stars for food but it's really 3.5; just not quite at 4 and it varies somewhat based on what you order. The sandwich of the day is a decent value if you like the choice for the day.
delicious food, excellent service. Went with a friend for casual dinner, and we both enjoyed our appetizers and our entrees. We were both too full for dessert. Had a free popcorn app from Yelp, and the truffle Parmesan popcorn was a nice treat.
We ate here early, prior to going to the Opera. The restaurant is within easy walking distance from the Civic Center Theater. I had the glazed grilled salmon served with parmesan asparagus spears which was very good. My husband had the sea bass which he felt was a bit bland. We split a Caesar salad and it was plenty for two.
It had been years since I dined at Currant, not because it lacked anything, but because I rarely had the opportunity to dine downtown. I was so impressed with the restaurant that for years I sent travelers, who asked for my opinion as an Airport Ambassador, to dine at what I called " a destination restaurant in a sweet hotel." It was time for me to see if I approved of Currant currently. Absolutely. And now I encourage the curious to be part of Happy Hour for appealing appetizers and choice wine at a discount. Friendly and competent wait staff, of course. Mellow background tapes for quiet conversation. I have no reservations about recommending Currant.
I had a burger and it was very, very good although the menu is limited - probably better for lunch than a pre-theater dinner. Reasonably priced wine list with decent choices. The ambiance would have been cozy but the television sets scattered around the restaurant offer the intimacy of an Applebee's. Our waiter was pleasant but rushed us to order then clear our plates (no, not while one person is still eating, thank you). He was not very knowledgeable on the menu and didn't sell us on anything (the rosotto is not that great, i hate rice - he said). He said he was the manager as well but I am skeptical as to whether that was true. The rest of the staff was very nice and knowledgeable. The burger was so good I might actually go back but probably not in a dress.
Had to wait 5 min for valet to make appearance. When he did he was confused, disoriented or drugged. Other than the quality of the beef, the food was very mediocre -- wedge salad swimming in too much low-taste dressing greyere on onion soup nuked to a rubbery consistency while the soup itself was watery, cool and lacking in flavor; frites were not crisp; sea bass barely warm one person received no sauce or frites with his order having to wait for them while meal got even cooler. Dining room and bar were chaotic & loud. Texted for car when ready to go but again valet wasn't cognizant & had to wait at least 5 min in the rain for him to locate the keys & bring the car. Altogether a very unpleasant experience.
Burger was cooked well, side salad was too much. My guests turkey burger looked dry. Server waited a while to take our order.
I was sorry they didn’t offer the full menu on Christmas Eve
I was embarrassed when the server came over and said was credit card was declined twice. Turns out it was their system but I was at a business lunch and he could have been more discreet.
I was told to either pay cash or wash dishes.
Also I had the risotto which was $16.95. The veggies in it were not cooked and hard.
My wife and I have been to Currant many times and our latest dinner was not up to their high standards. We both ordered the grilled salmon and what we were served was very small. Normally the salmon is a generous piece but not this time. Even the couple we were with remarked how small the serving size was. In hindsight, I should have spoken to the manager but we were in a hurry to catch a play. I may mention it the next time we have dinner there.
This was a pre theatre choice and proved to be quite acceptable to our party. Nice relaxed environment, not too noisy so we could hear each other, food was good and just the right portion. Service ok, coffee could have been warmed more frequently. Overall , very happy with food, location and price.
Poor coordination among the servers where we were seated. Appetizer arrived after the salad, which was served without water as requested, and our wine selection didn’t arrive until after entree was served so we had to ask.
We made a reservation through Open Table. We were seated, that was fine. But then, we waited and waited and waited some more and no one ever came over. Then we got up to ask if anyone was ever going to come greet us. We were told someone would be over momentarily. We sat back down and waited and waited and waited some more. We asked again, and again, we waited! This was the most ridiculous experience. We eventually just walked out and left. I will never return here again after that experience.
Fantastic food, fantastic service. Great place to eat before going to the theater. We will make it a habit.
The Pork Charcuterie, Nicoise salad and Apple Strudel were wonderful and the service was excellent. We are definitely coming back!
