Parking only on side streets & all the side streets were packed for week day 6 pm reservations. No one answered the phone at Crawford & Sons reservation line when I called circling the block to find suggestions for parking. Cute place. Service was good. The wheat rolls that people rave about online were just Parkerhouse rolls, the mushroom side dish people raved about was very good & very rich. Our party of three ordered a fish dish, a chicken dish, & a pork dish. We each thought our food was good but nothing special. Probably will not return. If lived in the neighborhood might be a nice local spot but for price & food I’d rather go other places.
Ambiance and presentation get my highest praise. Decor is designed to reduce noise level so conversation is possible. Wait staff is friendly and attentive. Dishes are attractively presented. Food is good but mostly accentless. Crumb and rhubarb dessert could have been more rhubarby. Bread pudding was just bread and mushrooms soaked in "gravy", good but not great and needing a new name as southerners expect bread pudding to be sweet. Rolls were really good, but I get as good or better at home and do not pay $8 for them. From a merchandising standpoint, lose the charge for the bread. I would recommend the restaurant to others but some slight changes could widen your customer base.
Fantastic birthday dinner.
Absolutely stunned with how creative the dishes were. What surprised me was that they did not seem "heavy" and we tried stuff from each of the menues. Many creative places I've been tend toward adding butter or cream sauce, Crawford did not do that yet the ingredients were extraordinarily creative and fresh. Excellent restaurant and would love to return. Also, waiter was exceptional, gave us space good recommendations and was there when we needed him. Only negatives were 1) did not like the seating near entrance; felt a little on display and 2) very unfriendly reservation process....took a month and honestly, it didn't seem that crowded. Will go back if I can get in; it did feel a little like the "regulars" got preferences, just saying.
Scott and crew are always on point, on of the best meals I have had in a while!!! Can't wait to get back.
So much nom! Lived up to the rep and had a great atmosphere. Service is knowledgeable but unpretentious.
Food and service were excellent. The space is a bit noisy, but we were sitting in the front at a window where it was more quiet. Menu is small but the options are wonderful.
I rarely leave a review, but in this case I just had to. From beginning to end it was outstanding. Our service and food were impeccable. It is a bit pricey, but worth every penny. It is great for sharing entrees. My husband and I ordered 2 small plates, an entree and a dessert and that was almost too much food. I would recommend this place to all I know! Great experience, staff and chef!
Really great meal as always!
What can I say... Some of the BEST fresh Sea Bass I've ever had...it was simply divine and just melted in my mouth. I could literally eat it every single night for dinner... If this *Super Talented Chef* does not win a coveted James Beard Award soon --something is incredibly wrong. This is now one of my favorite restaurants in town.
This is the best restaurant we've found in Raleigh. The menu adjusts roughly seasonally, making it exciting every time you go, but they keep a handful of stalwarts so you aren't too disappointed missing out on a favorite. This time my husband and I went with his parents so we were able to order a little more food and share everything. We started with the wheat rolls, which are always a hit and a mushroom bread pudding. We had no idea what the latter would be like, but it was amazing. It was like a Thanksgiving stuffing you could eat year round. All four of us absolutely loved it. Then we moved to the tuna crudo and endive salads that are always on the menu (and always fantastic). Both were plated beautifully and made a big impact. Two of us loved both dishes equally and two of us were more into the endive. I recommend the endive if you're dining with a non-foodie or a timid foodie. It's very palette-friendly while still being elevated and amazing for the serious foodie. The crudo is smoky, so it can be off-putting to people who aren't used to pairing fresh flavors with smokiness. Then we got a roasted chicken entree with creamy rice that was amazing. The portion was very generous. Definitely if you're not a sharing type of person, this dish would be plenty of food for your meal. And we got a "sea bass" dish with a lemony/leeky/fennely broth. I put sea bass in quotes because you can call a lot of things sea bass, but most people assume it will be a thick slab of fish. It was definitely a thinner filet... we were guessing it was actually flounder. Three of us preferred the chicken and one of us preferred the fish. We finished off with a banana/toffee pastry thing and a carrot cake trifle. Both were great, but neither was something any of us would head to the restaurant for. It's hard to find really phenomenal desserts at restaurants with really phenomenal regular food. But these weren't disappointing and satisfied the end-of-meal sweet tooth.
Having visited the NC Museum of Art we wanted to have an early dinner. We made reservations at Crawford & Son. Although we arrived a bit early, we were seated immediately at a lovely table in the front window. Our dinners were wonderful & Gregory was a great wait person. His advice was spot on.
The appetizers were spectacular. We had the roasted carrots, yellowtail crudo, spicy fish stew, and duck croquette. The presentation of each dish was elegant. I was convinced after the appetizer course that this could be one of the best restaurants in the Triangle. Sadly, the entree course was a let down by comparison. We had the poached sea bass, crispy pork cutlet, chicken confit, and short rib meatloaf. All of the dishes were good but not outstanding. I would definitely return and give it a second try. The appetizers alone are worth the trip.
I took my husband to Crawford & Son for his birthday as we had never been. Our server was so helpful explaining dishes and giving us suggestions. The food was absolutely fantastic. Every single thing we ordered was delicious. Yes, the tables are close together and its pretty loud. If you’re looking for somewhere romantic, I probably wouldn’t suggest this restaurant, but if you want fantastic food and service, this is your place.
This was my first time here and I was very impressed. Staff was very pleasant and worked hard to make sure my mom, daughter and I had a great experience. We sat at the bar and loved having Rachel and Taylor as our servers. Natalie was the host and greeted us with a warm smile. She was very nice and accommodating. We ordered the beef cheeks and the chicken. The chicken and rice (my mom's dish) was good but the beef was surprisingly very soft and I expected more of a textured meat. This is probably a culture difference. My mom browns her stew beef before actually stewing it and the beef cheeks had a great taste but it was a bit mushy for me. Rachel was quick to offer to get me something different and the meatloaf was a great substitution! We definitely felt welcome and I'd love to return when I'm back in town (I live in North Charlotte). Kudos to staff!! Thanks for everything.
Really intriguing menu. The pasta and clams appetizer was amazing, you need to try it. Wife had the chicken confit which she said was best chicken she had ever ordered out. I had the sea bass in broth, which was delicious. The mushroom bread pudding was also a one of a kind treat. Finished with the bananas, cream, and puffed pastry. Highly recommend Crawford and Sons.
Beef Tartar was best I have ever had. The Crispy pork was fine but the cabbage underneath it was not cooked long enough. Everyone at the table seemed to enjoy their food. One mishap in cocktails was easily fixed. The Paloma was great- I wish I had ordered that instead of just tasting my husbands. Not quite up to the hype but pretty good.
Great food. I was happy to pay at the end of the night.
Our meal was phenomenal at every course. One would usually scoff at $6 for bread and butter, but it was worth every penny. The Yellowtail Crudo was a highlight, but the sea bass, and beef cheek entrees were perfectly executed as well. Overall an excellent first time experience and we cannot wait to come back.
We have been here several times now and we are impressed each and every time. The menu changes up quite a bit and every thing we have tried is outstanding. Also the cocktails are unique and very tasty! Would strongly recommend you trying this place.
Our 2nd visit recently & continue to be amazed at the quality of flavorful, creative, well-prepared food. Also by the down-to-earth, warm, friendly service by all the staff. My friend & I unintendedly presented a couple of challenges & staff took them in stride with graciousness & poise like champs. Not the most appealing décor, but a fun atmosphere, a memorable meal, & a good time almost assuredly to be had.
We went to Crawford & Son for my husband's birthday. We had a great time, the staff was amazing and gave great recommendations. We will definitely be back!
Really flavorful food and fantastic service
We finally made it to Crawford & Son the other night. We now can't understand what took us so long. We had an early reservation -- 6 p.m. -- and the place was full in a nice and energetic way. The server was very helpful and we ended up with two appetizers (larger than normal starters) which were excellent and then shared an entree (it was big enough for both of us) which also was excellent. You are seated right next to other people but it worked. It was all fun and very good. We'll be back.
the meal was perfectly prepared. the seasoning was just right with such a wonderful use of herbs. i don't know exactly how Scott Crawford pickles the vegetables but that one thing makes for unique flavors which are light.
Lived up to the reviews in the N&O. Lived in Raleigh 30 years and this is the best meal my wife and I have had.
Lovely anniversary dinner :)
The pork, carrots, beef tartare and the poppyseed cake were amazing!
Lovely food; one of the best restaurants in Raleigh. My beef cheeks were tender and moist, although a tad over salted. My daughter loved the chicken confit. The banofee dessert was outstanding.
Very good food and great atmosphere! Some of the best food I've had in the area
Scott Crawford is a culinary genius and Melissa his manager provides an exceptional staff team. Always a memorable experience.
Food and service was excellent.
Excellent service. Food was absolutely delicious.
The food here blew our minds!! Usually I try not to fill up on bread but I couldn’t stop! Their wheat rolls with some kind of maple butter were ridiculous - melt in your mouth, savory but also sweet....so good. Our next favorite was the mushroom bread pudding. Had never had anything like that and we loved it. We made reservations day-of and opted to sit at the bar but it was very spacious! Great service too. Highly recommend!
Second time was as good as the first! The food is creative and tasty. Four of us shared 4 starters, 2 entrees and one dessert - a perfect amount of food. The crab porridge was outstanding..... as the orphan says in "Oliver", "May I have so'more please"! Entrees were beef cheeks and swordfish, both outstanding. We'll be back!
Flawless, yet another excellent dinner at C&S, always a pleasure.
You won't be disappointed! Such a talented chef and staff for the perfect dining experience. A must try if you are in the Raleigh area.
