Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Victor Jimenez

From the OpenTable editors: The award-winning, ride-’em-cowboy digs—hello, indoor fire pits—are one reason to dine at this long-standing East Village steakhouse. But so is the meaty food. Executive chef Victor H. Jimenez serves world-class New American fare like New York-style Hokkaido wagyu (flown in from Japan) and smoked garlic mac and cheese.

The appetizers were absolutely amazing, the cocktails fantastic and our dinner was perfect. We had the tartar to start which was the best I've ever eaten and the bread complimented it so nicely. The dirty martini and old fashioned with the single barrel Buffalo Trace were exquisite (so much so I had to order a glass of straight single barrel Buffalo Trace). Purely Perfect. Then we got our wedge salad which had a perfect ranch (not to cream and not too thick) that complemented the salad nicely as well as a thick piece of perfectly cooked bacon. My wife and I shared the ribeye and the bacon mac n' cheese which were on point. The ribeye was a perfect medium rare served atop fluffy/light and creamy mashed potatoes and broccolini. The bacon mac n' cheese was a big serving for two but it reheated very well and is a must get when you're there. Wine selection was superb and no matter when you go to Cowboy Star ALWAYS get the rolls.

First time at this restaurant, wow, what a delight. The service was top notch, from the guy at the door to our waiter, Luis. Shout out to Ruby, who was amazing in explaining the flavors of the dishes and recommendations. The food was amazing. Definitely will be back. Best old fashioned in town.

Everything was great! We were sat at the bar overlooking the kitchen which is not something I really wanted but at the end of the night it was not that bad. The bread service is worth it, photos may show the rolls looking rather plain but they are so buttery soft with a sprinkle of kosher salt on top. We ordered the heirloom tomatoes to start which was the best combination of the sweet tomatoes and creamy fromage. For dinner we shared the 40oz porterhouse which came with whipped potatoes and broccoli; we added an order of mac & cheese, the chimichurri sauce and the bearnaise sauce. The steak really did not need the sauces and I think we seldom used them but they were delicious and crafted very well. The steak was so tender it melted in my mouth as a good steak should. The mac & cheese had the perfect amount of cheese and the bacon lardons are amazing little pops of salty goodness. For dessert we had the banana pudding which did not appear to look like your traditional banana pudding. It was a mouse topped with brulee bananas and banana ice cream. It might sound like a lot of banana flavor but it really is just the right amount. The service was pretty standard, it was not overly attentive but we did not feel ignored either. In general we are low maintenance customers. I did very much appreciate how quickly they removed the empty dishes from our area since we did not have a lot of space at the bar and we ordered a large steak. I can't wait to come back!

Food was extremely lackluster. Shells in our oysters, rolls that tasted store bought/frozen. Undercooked steaks.
