COMAL is a gathering place located in Berkeley’s bustling Arts District, just north of the Downtown Berkeley BART Station. The restaurant is housed in a single-story building (circa 1927) and features a lush, secluded rear patio with a full bar, covered dining area, and al fresco beer garden with fire pit.

Executive Chef Matt Gandin creates earthy, modern interpretations of dishes from throughout Mexico, with emphasis on Oaxaca and neighboring coastal regions. We offer an “all-Mexican” list of craft cocktails, house-made sangritas paired with our curated collection of agave spirits, and a diverse selection of local beer and wine on tap.

Also please note that Comal charges a 20% service charge in lieu of tips.

Our meal was fabulous. Our group of six enjoyed everything we tried - mocktails, cocktails, wine, salads, shared ribs and chicken, and all three desserts. Our waiter was perfect - Great suggestions and attentive without hovering.

We were delightfully surprised to learn there is a live salsa DJ at Comal on Thursday nights. It was an added bonus to a delicious meal having in sight dozens of energetic folks dancing around the fire pit out back!

Great server. Fun atmosphere. Started with an excellent little gems salad. Large portion enough for 2. Enchiladas great. Fish taco, so so. All in all really nice. Oh the flan. Exceptional.

Service was ok, the waiter was attentive when he showed up. But was responsible for too many tables. He was also the bus boy, cleaning tables after dinners left. That’s why he couldn’t attend to the table more often. The michelada though flavorful was not made well as the ratio to the mix to beer was off. The fish tacos were awful because the fish was very dry to almost being desiccated. The food was not authentic Mexican and dumbed down to appease the local population. This is significantly worse than the Comal that I experienced 4 years ago. When the food was delicious and flavorful. Unfortunately unless they go back to their roots, this place is a big miss for me.

Such a great place! There food is so unique and delicious. Not pretentious, super tasty and comfort food. Ambience is one of my favorites, both inside and out on the patio. We even love it when there is a wait, because we get to go back to the beautiful outdoor garden and can have a drink and chips and guac. A favorite place in the East Bay.

Service was fast, fun, & friendly. We dined at 5pm to make a 7 pm show. We were out the door by 6:30. Great Margaritas and food. Enjoyable atmosphere.

The food was really great! Interesting options, different than what you typically see. And it was delicious! The service was friendly and efficient. We had theater tickets and they got our food to us right away so we had plenty of time.
