The food here is amazing. I ordered the shrimp and grits for brunch and the grits are some of the best I have ever had. They certainly have the southern food thing down done in an elevated way. I love their cocktail menu and their house punch is tasty and a great value. Their appetizers are all fantastic. I highly recommend the fried okra. The deviled eggs are also on point. It’s a great place for brunch but I would get a reservation because people love to hang out here at brunch so the tables don’t turn over that quickly.
I came here for a celebratory dinner with one other person, and we sat at the beautiful marble (inside) bar for cocktails and dinner. I had the Heaven to Betsy's cocktail which was delicious, refreshing, and french-75-y, basically all of the things I ask for in a gin cocktail. We had two of the little biscuit sandwiches to start and they were perfectly sweet, salty, and spicy. We then split the Buttermilk Fried Chicken plate and I scarfed down the chicken and sides so fast it was so good. Capped it off with the yummy banana pudding. Thank you for a great evening! I will definitely be back!
Amazing boneless fried chicken. Sides were awesome. Biscuits were a bit of a disappointment - should / could have been softer / fresher. Great southern home cooking, well executed with superb service.
The interior is so warm and inviting. Great lighting and inviting design. The food was excellent. Fresh and served Hot! I had the Chicken Pot Pie, which was so delicious. My mom had the fried chicken with green beans and mashed potatoes. The best of comfort food... And of course, one of my favorites is the biscuits and Tomato Jam.
The only down side that evening was the server. She was not responsive to refilling drinks, nor anticipating needs, even though she had to pass by our table from the kitchen area to the other parts of the restaurant. It seemed the managers and wait staff loved to visit and laugh and gather around the computers instead of pay attention to customers. The other two times I have been here, I had very good service.
I live in Mueller and have been meaning to try Colleen's for a while, after hearing great things from friends who have tried it. I thought every thing we tried was wonderful. Well prepared vegetable dishes and interesting combinations of food. The waitress was knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to answer any questions we had patiently and with good humor. The wine list was also pretty exceptional. We tried some different wines by the glass and each of us in the party came away with a new favorite. Its a great place!
Decor was great but food and service were bland. Dismissive/bored waitress who barely spoke. Everything we ordered needed salt--I wasn't aware one could gentrify southern cuisine, but Colleen's has that down. Fried green tomatoes with literally no seasoning, just an overly thick cornmeal batter. Mac & cheese our son took 2 bites of and refused to finish (and after I had a bite I didn't blame him). It looked creamy but had zero flavor to it.
Wouldn't recommend or try again. If you're the type to think mayo is "too spicy" though, this is the place for you.
The roasted tomato soup was a stand-out dish. I had it with the grilled pimiento cheese sandwich and it was a perfect lunch. I wish this soup could be on the menu every day.
We tried Colleen's on a whim before heading to downtown Austin to get some southern cookin'. The spot is casual but swanky at the same time. Our server was nice and friendly. I would definitely come here again- can't beat that fried chicken! :)
Great food and gorgeous interior. Unfortunately our waitress took over 45 minutes to take orders and an hour to cash us out on a slower night.
My 2nd time to eat here, food was simply perfect. My only issue was our waitress was not as attentive as I would have liked.
Great time was had by my dinner party of 13. The food was delicious. EVERYONE enjoyed what they ordered, from the fried green tomatoes, fried catfish, chicken, and the desserts!!!! The key lime pie and bacon-covered dates were ABSOLUTELY delicious!!! Our server Adrian was phenomenal. He handled my guest with kindness & patience as they deliberated over what to order! Will definitely visit again!
I love Colleen's place. Very tasty old school with an update! Never disappoints. There were a few minor issues to mention.
Related to cocktails: always have gin options and also standard mixers (no tonic? what bar does that)?
For food: be prepared to offer an appetizer that fits the number of guests at a table. For example, if you know there are 3 biscuits in an appetizer order, why not throw in a 4th without asking? Or, if you must charge, ask the guests about a slight charge for a 4th biscuit because it is an order of 3 for 4 people. Just saying.
Otherwise, shrimp and grits were fabu as always and the pot pie and fried green tomatoes were amazing. Keep up the great work.
Friendly staff really makes a difference. I enjoyed my experience last time when I came in for dinner but it was much-much busier this time and at first i predicted it would cause delays but though it did take us a few minutes to get our table we were both very happy. The lumbar pillows are a nice touch and the staff were great they sent us home with fresh baked cookies. Try Colleen’s already, will ya?
Good food with a few glitches , loved my shrimp but the grits were too soupy , I needed a spoon to eat them . The biscuits were delicious and my husband enjoyed his pot pie , thought the crust was delicious but needed the chicken to be cut into smaller pieces to allow the pie to get hot enough on the inside . The staff super nice , loved the outdoor seating .
A very nice experience. Go for the fried chicken!
Really great place we found last minute for dinner while we were on vacation. The neighborhood was great, parking was easy and the food was incredible! I loved this place and wish it was in my hometown!
Food was amazing. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating. Service was slower but we weren’t in a hurry so it was fine with us. We were there for a leisurely brunch and to catch up with out of town friends. The wait staff could have picked up on or this and wasn’t rushing us so I can’t fault them on this. We can’t wait to go back to try more things! We live in Bee Caves and it was well worth the 45 minute drive. I only mention the service so people can go in with chill expectations. It isn’t like Houston’s/Bartletts where every time you turn around there is a new glass of tea but you also don’t feel like you need to rush out either which is nice too. Definitely a gem!!!
our waiter drake was a lot of fun. helpful in ordering etc. cocktails were brilliant. we sat outside, but while waiting inside for our table it seemed pretty loud. kids were running around, etc. figs, mac n cheese awesome. fried chicken a bit dry. otherwise had a great time.
Several trips to Austin before I finally got to check this one off the list......but now its on the "always go back to when in Austin" list. Décor, service, food, variety ALL outstanding. It's now my daughter's go to place for brunch with friends. If you can get past wanting to just eat the fried bread pieces as an appetizer the rest of the menu is fabulous. The biscuits!!! The biscuits!!! More biscuits! :-)
Appetizer Biscuits were hard compared to the biscuit that came with my meal.
Excellent service!! The food is always amazing, and this time was no different.
This was our first visit to Colleen’s Kitchen. We enjoyed the brunch menu items like chicken and waffles with eggs, shrimp and grits with a chicken biscuit and Colleen’s Breakfast with eggs, ham and home fries and fried Rene tomato biscuit. Our waitress was very helpful and delightful. We’ll be back!
Service was attentive but not cloying; food was excellent and portions were commensurate with the price point. I’m one of those people who hates television in fine dining places, but this is Texas so football governs. Nevertheless I’ll definitely be back, and I’ve enthusiastically recommended it to friends.
Great menu. Authentic Southern food. Great wait staff.
Food was delicious. Service exhibited NO SENSE of urgency and bordered on patronizing. I ordered hot tea / got 1 teacup of hot water, no refills, nor any teapot...??!!
I would return for the food.
Great time at Colleen's for a special birthday treat. We took Mom to Colleen's to celebrate a big milestone birthday. The management and front of house staff went above and beyond to make the occasion memorable and super special. At the end of the meal they brought a plate of their warm choco-chip cookies with candles and a birthday inscription. What a wonderful surprise! Highly recommend.
The one complaint I had was it was for brunch, and my companion and I were never asked
If we wanted more coffee.
I found the food to be good, but not great. What was excellent was the service. The staff at Colleen's is exceptional and wonderful with children. Even though the food didn't wow me, we'll absolutely be back because it was such a friendly and accepting atmosphere for our baby!
The staff here went above and beyond to make our meal special and the food was delicious. This has become our new favorite breakfast spot.
We went to Colleen’s Kitchen for my birthday and really enjoyed it. We started with the catfish appetizer and it was crunchy and yummy. The pimiento cheese was tart and good we well.
We shared the fried chicken for our entree and it was delicious. Very moist for being boneless. Sides of Mac and cheese and french fries, as well as green beans did not disappoint.
The restaurant it loud, and that’s the only down side to our experience. Otherwise, I was very happy with my birthday dinner at Colleen’s!
Our toddler’s food came out quick and was perfect. My husband and I had to wait about 20 more minutes for our food (shrimp and grits and the breakfast casserole) and I’m not quite sure why, it wasn’t very busy. The casserole was good but small portion and no side, probably won’t get that again. Otherwise, a lovely experience!
We dined this evening and were underwhelmed by our experience. We started with fried green tomatoes which were okay but under seasoned. It seemed forever before we placed our entree order. My husband had the chicken pot pie and the best part was it’s appearance. Inside were huge pieces of grisly dark meat. Although I’m not opposed to dark meat these pieces were inedible. Overall Colleen’s will not be a dining experience we will repeat.
Although our waiter wasn’t the best, the food was worth it. I highly recommend the shrimp and grits and biscuits and gravy. But I do not recommend the chicken and waffles. Ours weren’t cooked long enough nor seasoned well enough.
Excellent. Will be back!! Thank you
This is one of my new “go to” restaurants in Austin. Great comfort food, but prepared in a way that upgrades the standard fare you get at other places. Awesome service. I have yet to eat here when the service staff was anything but outstanding. I love their little outside bar, although when I’ve been there during daylight hours it’s been a little hot, and at night, it gets packed early.
This really is one of the best new spots to eat in town. And located in the great Mueller neighborhood. I highly recommend. Collen’s Kitchen.
This is a fantastic restaurant. As someone who grew up in East Tennessee, I know good southern food. This place smelled like my grandmother’s house on a Sunday evening. The fried green tomatoes were as good as I’ve ever had out. The fried chicken was a perfect crisp on the outside and incredibly juicy inside. The waitstaff was knowledgeable, helpful when it came to figuring out how much food we needed as a group, and extremely friendly. Next time I’m in Austin, I will certainly come back.
The food was ok, my husband ordered the redfish & it was very small, tasty but small for the price. I ordered the chicken pot pie, it was more like chicken soup with a crust on top, not at all appetizing or what I expected. We ordered the biscuits, which were really tasty - as an appetizer & they came out AFTER our meal. The waitress was very dismissive about it, which was kind of annoying. She acted like it was normal for our appetizer to come last so she could avoid making it right. It also took a very long time for our food to come out. They need more choices at their bar, liquor selection is VERY limited. The decor is really cute, & the hostesses were very nice. I don’t think their kitchen is large enough to handle the amount of available tables though. I think it has potential to be much better. I’ll give then 1 more try at some point.
Meh. Too expensive for what you get.
Good food, great server and friendly and accommodating host
Benn anxious to Colleens—now I am anxious to go back! Brunched there today and its moved to the top of out Austin go-to places. Decor, service, food were all amazing including Chicken & Waffles, assortment of biscuit combos, fried okra. Oh, and an ice cream sandwich. Ready to try for dinner and lunch to taste rest of menu. Back real soon....
