You’ll need to be in on a few secrets to visit Coal & Cedar. This hidden speakeasy has no signage and no doorbell. Instead, you’ll need to text a special code to a number on the wall and a host will open the door and usher you inside. Rest assured, it’s worth the effort, having just won Best Regional bar in Australia 2016.

Once inside, you’ll discover a moody, eclectic cocktail bar with an urban edge. Exposed brick walls and dark timber are complemented by dim lighting from vintage chandeliers. Holding fewer than 60 guests, it’s this old world ambience that sets Coal & Cedar apart from Newcastle’s bar scene.

Ethan and Ryan are the team behind the venture. In 2014, they packed their bags and moved from Sydney to the state’s largest regional city to work on their new dream bar. They found the perfect site on Hunter Street, which was just dingy enough to house a Prohibition-style speakeasy. Transforming the space with taxidermy, eccentric images and many a bottle of booze.

Staff and atmosphere amazing. Shame the drinks menu is mostly gin, whisky and bourbon. I preferred the drinks menu they had 12 months ago. Still amazing though

I surprised my girlfriends with this special hidden place and they were absolutely blown away! Great vibe and amazing service. Coal and Cedar has as a stunning selection of drinks and the cheese and charcuterie platter was a hit. One said the music was a little loud but nothing to really interfere with our conversation. The clientele attracted to this place are respectful and focused on their own people and conversations. Everyone has a smile and demonstrates being delighted by their experience. I have recommended to other friends already and looking forward to go again. Thank you

What a gem of a bar! From the moment we walked in the service was fantastic - friendly, attentive and genuinely welcoming. The vibe? Spot on. Think The kind of atmosphere that makes you want to stay for "just one more". Already planning our next visit. Highly recommend if you're after a great night in the coolest venue with fabulous service.

Absolutely outstanding service. Reeve’s knowledge of liquor didn’t cease to amaze. The ambience and vibes were what we were looking for on Valentine’s day for drinks. Most definitely will be back!!

I booked Coal & Cedar on Monday 27 January. Google says they are open 5pm-1am. The booking was for my partner’s birthday. We arrived at Coal & Cedar at 6pm. Doors are closed. Called and text. Eventually got a reply 30 minutes later saying they are closed due to the public holiday. The open table booking system should not have allowed the booking to go through if there was a public holiday shutdown
