Having spent years supplying London’s top restaurants through their separate wine businesses, Joe Haynes and Benedict Butterworth have joined forces with Tom Hurst, who has worked at Brawn, The Marksman, Levan, and most recently as Head Chef at Lasdun, to launch the trio’s first restaurant together.

Located in a Grade II listed building on Cloth Fair, Cloth Restaurant is part of a historic row of buildings in the City of London that survived the Great Fire of 1666. Down this atmospheric alley opposite St Bartholomew church, Cloth is taking over a double fronted corner site that’s beneath the former home of poet John Betjeman and next door to the two oldest residential buildings in London.

Inside, low ceilings, wood floorboards with antique wall lights and artwork create a cosy, intimate atmosphere, while marble tables, long dark wood banquettes, antique crockery and cutlery will create the feel of a classic bistro.

They have atmosphere of bistro. Packed and not welcoming. Staff is friendly, but not professional. They did not switch on air conditioning, until I asked… strange that they didn’t think about it. Menu is small. Food is good quality. Wine selection is interesting, but overpriced. Tables small and very close to one another, so not great for any kind of private conversation. Even when waiter come to service your neighbours, they have to touch you… strange concept of high quality place. Prices are outrageous. Very poor value for money.

This was a third visit to Cloth and it’s fast becoming a favourite. Faultless cooking (we especially enjoyed the sirloin last night) and a lovely relaxed - almost romantic! - atmosphere. Staff are friendly and very knowledgeable (especially about the interesting wine list.)

Had an absolute wonderful experience. The Cloth staff knew the menu and made great recommendations for the food and accompanying wine. Staff attentive but not too much. Food was simply stunning, great taste and texture and just worked. Will be back.

Beautiful little restaurant on a cosy side street near Smithfield market. Food was really fresh and interesting flavour combinations especially the starters and snacks. Very extensive winelist as well! Would definitely return.

A first visit. Enjoyed it. Nice ambiance, good atmosphere without being noisy. Starters and mains very good indeed. Friendly service. Food and service went pear shaped with the panna cotta. Delay then twice arrived without being set: a crème consistency. Not charged on pointing out but should never have been served. It was obvious they were not set. A shame because until then rating 5 out of 5. Still a good 4 out of 5. Fair pricing for this quality.
