What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
7.5

Jose Andres’ new place isn’t quite up to the level of his other spots, but it’s a fun time for Peruvian, Japanese, and Chinese fusion.

Ratings 7.0-7.5:These are your neighborhood standbys - the places that you’ll happily hit for some pasta or a quick salad, but not a restaurant you are bringing your parents or (god forbid) a date to. The true embodiment of good but not great.

We went for happy hour at the bar. The drinks were great but the food was slightly heavy.

We had a great experience! The food was amazing and the cocktails tasted and were created so well. This is one of our new favorite spots. Definitely coming back!

It was fun and very interesting food. Good value for Restaurant Week. The "typical" Peruvian dessert with mango, caramel, etc. was fantastic!

We went for lunch during Restaurant week, we had an early reservation and the restaurant was not busy for the first half of our lunch. All of this is to say Restaurant week is not a good excuse for why service was missing in action. The whole process was very slow. Lunch took over an hour and a half. I like a leisurely meal, but not at lunch. The food was good, and I would go back when I can have a leisurely meal, but not for lunch.

This is one of our favorite places to eat at in DC. Perhaps it was restaurant week and they were really busy, but I felt on my last visit that the food and service quality wasn’t as great as it used to be. I’m hoping it was just an off night, and will still come back for sure.

Great food, awful service. Servers are not familiar with menu, ingredients, and drinks. Our sever said it was impossible to make a mock-tail for my wife, who is pregnant, but when I talked to the bartender directly, he said it shouldn’t be an issue and did a great job. Seems like our serve just didn’t want to put the effort of even asking. I also asked her if she could explain to me he difference between some of the different piscos they offer (they have over 20 different kinds) and told me “they are just different brands” (and I’m quoting) “ just like vodka, there is grey goose... or absolut”. I understand that if you’re new to a job you might not be familiar with certain things, but if on top of that you have an attitude, then you should probably find a different job.

As a Peruvian, I was very impressed with the flavor and presentation of the dishes. I recommend to try the Chilcano tasting menu and of course the Pisco Sour. The tasting menu brings plenty of dishes (combination of traditional Criollo, Japanese and Chinesse Peruvian food). A great place to taste good Peruvian food.

Food was phenomenal. It was a little louder than we expected since we planned this for our anniversary but luckily the food made up for it

Everything great, not toddler friendly (Doesn’t need to be). Server sections seem large, he was being pulled in a lot of directions. But food more than made up for that little stuff. Would definitely make this a regular spot.

Great new addition to the Jose Andres family of restaurants. A really cool mix of Peruvian, Chinese, and Japanese good that doesn’t feel forced. Cool ambiance, piscos straight out of minibar, and excellent food. Only one of our small plates (of many) missed the mark, but only because everything else was excellent. Get the lucky 12 Shumai!

We had mostly dim sum and it was delicious. But, China Chilcano is "no frills" with an uninviting ambience: Concrete floors, open exposed ceiling, plain wooden tables, hard metal chairs. It was my first time there. Like most restaurants in DC it was very noisy and hard to hear each other talk, which always makes me reluctant to go back. And, America's obsession with air conditioning is a big turn-off. The AC was set to 'Popsicle' and it was freezing in there. We loved the food but couldn't wait to leave so we could thaw out and finally hear normally. Summary: Good food, good service, but bring a jacket and don't plan on meeting friends there to catch up with conversations.

While every one of the ten dishes sampled on the tasting menu was inspired and beautifully executed, some shined above others. Next to the truly special lomo saltado and dancing yucca, the siu mai seemed almost bland.

Our group really enjoyed the cocktail offerings, with the El Capitán, Mo Collins, and Peruvian 88 all winning high praise.

The decor inside is fun and upbeat with details of interest peppered throughout the space. The graffiti walls in the bathrooms are worth spending a few minutes reading.

That said, I'm docking a star from atmosphere for the temperature in the restaurant. It was very, very warm. We found ourselves sweating and fanning ourselves with the menus.

Food was outstanding... well conceived, well executed.
I was happy to notice on the drinks list that a Master Sommelier (Andrew Myers) was selected to curate the wine list. It would seem that having such an individual would indicate an appreciation of the importance of food and wine pairings. However, our primary waiter seemed to care not. I ordered three items and three separate pairings with those items. Each time, food would come and the wine would not. I had to flag down and request my wines each time, usually a 5-8 minute wait after the food had arrived. So much for "pairing"...
The primary waiter was apathetic at best, occasionally sullen. The support waiters (food runners) were all excellent.

The servers and location were phenomenal, and the food was great, but portions were significantly smaller than expected. For dishes in the $16(7 to $20 range, the portions were smaller than I expected. Enjoyed the visit but would probably only return on special occasions.

Easy to book reservations online for a large group, I had to call to make a special request. Staff was attentive, but let our dinner group set the pace and never rushed us. Dessert was the best surprise - flavors and presentations that delighted everyone.

Food is always very good, I like the ceviches, the vegetarian dumplings and basically everything I have ever ordered! It is a bit loud, I would not recommend it as a romantic spot. It is great for sharing with friends, since it is tapas style.
I hope they keep renewing the menu, there was a ceviche special menu this time.

Would definitely visit again.

First and foremost, extremely accommodating. I made my reservation for 7:30PM and called 10 minutes before then to reschedule for 9:30PM with absolutely no issues. I had a orange allergy I wrote in advance on the reservation which the hostess confirmed upon our arrival. Was then greeted by our server with that knowledge as well. The bartender then came and spoke with us about the allergy as well, communication is great within this restaurant for sure. Ordered a bunch of plates off the menu, dim sum was great, spicy tuna was fantastic, even had a dumpling with quail eggs on it. Cocktails were fun, bought pitchers of them. Ambience was great, definitely busy and a little loud, however that adds to the experience for me personally as a diner. All in all was a fun night, will definitely go again.

To be honest, the tasting menu is a little overpriced considering the finesse of the dishes. It came also too fast to enjoy it fully.
The biggest issue we’ve experienced is the freezing temperature! It basically ruined the experience...
Sorry but that’s a fact!

I came with a fairly large group for lunch, which I know can be annoying for a restaurant, but they treated us very well. We had a great table, which was in the middle of the action but still felt quasi-private. The server was attentive and our food came out quickly and correct. I had one of their donburi bowls (the salmon one) and it was tasty. I think there was probably a bit too much rice-to-topping ratio, but the flavors were good. I also had one of their desserts (made with a sweetened condensed milk custard and passion fruit ice), which was very tasty but played a bit strangely. (Co-centric circles of brown custard, blobs of cream, and meringue batons sticking straight up).

There's a lot on the menu and it's a bit hard to choose, so I'd be very happy going back and trying more of what they have to offer!

We did the tasting menu, and everything was delicious! Our group had a vegetarian and a mushroom allergy and the kitchen worked to accommodate all needs. The one con of our dinner was that it took THREE AND A HALF HOURS! I am all for a nice, slow meal with colleagues, but this was a little excessive.
