Overall experience was good. The menu has a few challenges for the shellfish allergies at the table in terms of selections that could be made shellfish free.
My third time celebrating a special occasion at this restaurant and it lived up to my expectations again! Food is excellent, service top notch and just an all round great place to dine. Pricey, but so worth it!
My first time there but the ambiance was very nice. I loved the decor and all. The food was delicious but definitely tapas style! Overall, the food was delicious.
Everything was so delicious and the servers took great care of us. I have a tree nut allergy and they assured me several times that they double checked and I was safe to eat the items I ordered, which I appreciated.
The creative menu was something we were excited about. However the waiter was not helpful to first time diners and was absent through out the rest of our time. He was never there to allow us to ask questions. The dumplings were great, and the ceviche was tasty, but over priced. The vibe and ambiance was only so so.
My husband and tried out the tasting menu. I thought the variety was great and the food was great. We remain Jose Andres fans.
We did the tasting menu and so happy we did. Would do it again, for sure.
Delicious food, great ambience. The service was fantastic as well. We will definitely return!
Very interesting, eclectic mix of Peruvian, Chinese, and Japanese. Lots of lime and cilantro. Unusual combinations, and all the ones we got worked. The fish stew stood out even in that company.
Food was delicious and interesting, drinks were spot on. Service was lacking at times....server disappeared often, or we had to flag him down. We will be back but hopefully with a different server.
I'm a regular at the Andres restaurants and this was my 4th time at China Chilcano. Food interest and quality are reliable. But we were disappointed with the dumplings...they were ordinary. Unfortunately our waiter was not particularly helpful at guiding us "All the dumplings
are really good." A small complaint, I guess. Our waiter and the support wait staff were excellent at helping us have a quick meal so that we could make our movie on time!
Wonderful, unique mash-up of Pervian, Chinese & Japanese culture and cuisine resulting in delicious dim sum, sushi rolls and other South American choices. Really fun and exciting place to eat. Great service, cool atmosphere.
I have been to Peru twice and am familiar with its food and drink. China Chilcano has a good ceviche (Ceviche Clásico (Criollo)* $14.00). While a bit expensive for the size, the taste was authentic. The Pegao Norteño (Chifa) - Lamb pot sticker, aderezo norteño, crispy cumin lace, gold flake - was also good, but again a bit expensive for the size at $14.00. The Pisco Sour was too sweet for my taste, but that probably will make it more popular with some people. I would advise sticking with the beer or telling your server to ask the bar to make it less sweet. All in all a good experience.
Really interesting and delicious meal. Civiche was especially good.
Had several dishes... Tuesday dim sum... ceviche dishes outstanding.. each dish had wonderful flavors.. you will not be disappointed
Dinner to introduce my husband to a colleague’s husband. Nice talk and nice food
CC does an excellent job with innovative cuisine and a very helpful waitstaff.
Great food!!! Everything was awesome, the only thing that we did not like much is the Aji de Gallina that we are not fans of , it is not our Peruvian favorite plate. Everything else from appetizers to drinks was superb!!!
The food was delicious! We had a mix of the Ceviches, Dim Sum, and Meat. You really can't go wrong. Wanted to do the Chilcano menu tour item, but maybe next time. The Chilcano 1 Liter pitcher was great. Only thing, I let the host know to let the server know it was my wife's birthday but I think they forgot. Otherwise, the service was really good.
Creative menu selections and lively atmosphere. Only drawback is the noise—not a good place to go for conversation.
We were visiting from NH with our grandchildren. The food was different and with the help of the waitress we ordered few different dishes. The children really liked. There are very little selection for vegetarians. There was no shrimp preparations. Most of the preparations had pork. My wife does not eat meat but like shrimp and certain fish. The food was delicious and the service was excellent
While definitely attracting a younger crowd, we were made to feel welcome. Without being asked, the manager found a quieter table for us and helped us to be moved there.
The wait staff was informed and courteous, this has been the case on all of my visits.
The real star of the show (sorry, this was post theater) was the food. The sublime blending of flavors, techniques, and textures makes each offering unique and surprising. This is a great place to be brave and expand your taste horizons.
First time here and won’t be the last. Tasting menu was great for a nice overview of the different options and an excellent value.
We had a wonderful time celebrating my Mother’s birthday! We had some dietary restrictions that can sometimes making dining out difficult, but the server showed us the many dishes that would work for us. The vegetarian dumplings were innovative and fresh! We ended up ordering 3 orders because we couldn’t stop eating them! Their take on a California roll was spectacular, unexpected and delightful! My Mother wanted a popsicle for her dessert but our server still made it work for a birthday by sticking a candle in a bucket of ice! Our server was amazing! This is a great restaurant for people who like good good but need to work around some dietary restrictions. We had a great time!
Tasting menu was phenomenal!
The food was excellent. We had a ceviche, a few of the vegetable dishes, and the hong kong noodles and all were really delicious. Pisco sour was great and they had a solid wine selection.
But I probably won't be back. The restaurant is massive and very noisy. Be prepared for tiny tables all right to each other. Service was decidedly off that night - too pushy with the pisco, disappeared for most of the meal, we had to hang on to our plates to get those last few bites, and the check was dropped before we finished our drinks. Maybe an off night for one bad server, so take my review with a grain of salt.
Our waiter was very well versed and super nice!
Great food and service - a treat to support the owner who is the well deserved recipient of the 2018 James Beard Humanitarian of the Year Aeard.
I have been to China Chicano twice in the last month, first for a friend's birthday, then for lunch after the theater. Each time, the food was scrumptious and the service was stellar. For my friend's birthday, the staff bent over backwards to do everything possible to make it a special time. Jose Andres is a wonderful humanitarian who has terrific restaurants.
My third time at this fine spot, and they outdid themselves yet again. I love the fact that they offer unusual ingredients, combined in imaginative ways, and go out of the way to explain everything so patiently. The flavors are just magnificent, and you won't find this at every restaurant on the block. And the ambience is stunning.
Not to mention that I love supporting Jose Andres in whatever he does. But when you have an absolutely delicious lunch, from the ceviche to a fine beef/vegetable combo, it's just a bonus!
China Chilcano is always a great go-to pick. This time a work colleague and I got the tasting menu and it didn't disappoint. Too much flavor (GREAT!), too much food (even better!).
The server was very informative and professional. Very helpful with regarding the menu and what was in it.
The tasting menu was definitely worth the price. The food was great and provided a little adventure for the evening. I would not recommend this restaurant for a first date because it was extremely loud. We could barely hear the server explain to us what was being served. The main waiters were extremely professional and helpful, however, there were a couple of times when a food service runner, just dropped out plates and ran. The wine selection was great and we enjoyed a fantastic Malbec. Overall we truly enjoyed the experience and would highly recommend trying the tasting menu. The decor was beautiful!
Outstanding experience with Peruvian food with strong Chinese and Japanese influences. Unique. Wish we lived near Washington, so we could visit this restaurant weekly.
Tasting menu food is creative and tasty but too "loud" and all over the place, similar to the decor. At the end of the meal it was difficult to discern and remember all that was consumed. Good if you like wild, colorful setting and food. Not our taste.
Had a very good experience, the waiter was very solicitous about someone in my party food allergies and produced a menu tailored for this, as well as providing recommendations.
The food was delicious and spaced in a way that allowed you to enjoy the various dishes without overcrowding the table.
Excellent meal. Our waiter was knowledgeable and patient. He made some very informed recommendations about food and beverage choices and was attentive without being intrusive. The food was excellent - arrived at the table hot and full of flavor. I've now been to China Chilcano three times and this was by far the best experience; all were good, however.
Following some meetings on a Monday night, a group of eight of us went to China Chilcano to celebrate/team-build. It was my job to pick the restaurant (I'm considered the local "foodie" of the group) and I wanted a place that was interesting enough to please the food snobs/adventurous types in the group but not so radical that the more timid palates could not find some safer options. The bottom line is it did it's job: we all had a great time, ate quite a lot of food, and drank many a pisco sour. Also, our server was exceptional, gave great suggestions and let us linger after our meal (it was a Monday after all). So is this the greatest restaurant in all of DC? Of course not (Chloe gets my vote for that right now). Do I like even Zytinia and Oyamel better (two of JA's other establishments)? Overall, yes, I prefer them both if I were choosing for myself. But am I also glad it provides another interesting option to take some out-of-towners/business associates and still feel like I can have a good meal too? ABSOLUTELY. It is a solid option to keep in one's tool box. I don't see it turning into one of my regular haunts, but I expect to go again happily when the opportunity presents itself. My only real complaint is I thought the noise level was a little louder than I would have preferred. But I'm probably starting to get old I guess.
Food was truly outstanding. Unusual blend of flavors and ingredients. Good and unusual drinks and beers. Good place to bring out of town guests looking for something delicious and much beyond the ordinary.
Will come back - tasty and unique dishes. Everything I had was very good. Pretty simple serve good food and people will come back.
