What Insiders Are Saying
Jose Andres’ new place isn’t quite up to the level of his other spots, but it’s a fun time for Peruvian, Japanese, and Chinese fusion.
I was really exciting to try this restaurant as I lived in south america and tried many times peruvian food which I found one of the best of South America. Decor and ambiance are great, server was ok I was a little big disappointed at the recommendation he makes, on the other side, runners who bring the plate was very effective , polite and seems to know well the plates. The food was average-good, I was disappointed at the flavors I found most of the food OK but without any excellent taste here is what we ordered: the beat thing were: pork belly bun and the catfish one, as well at the lomo 4/5. Ceviche del dia, aji de gallina and lucky 12 dumplings 3/5!
We made an open table reservation and were seated within five minutes despite being super crowded. Overall great food. Definitely get the pisco sour, though it is a little pricey, it's the closest concoction I've had to when I had one in Peru last summer. They really integrate the Chinese culture into the Peruvian food, and in doing so represent everything about the blending of history that exists in Lima. If you're home sick for Peru or you've never experienced its culture, this is a great place to try it out and not feel overwhelmed by foreign words. They make it approachable and accessible to all ages and all levels of adventurers!
Just OK. We came
Everything was wonderful, drink were awesome all of the ceviche was amazing, the grilled octopus was a bit chewy but still had great flavor. The fried rice was fire and the dancing yuca was fun and great
Having dined at other Jose Andres restaurants that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed, China Chilcano left me disappointed. Our server was very inattentive and after forgetting for 10 minutes to bring my date’s beer, brought the wrong one and never realized his mistake. The food was pretty average and for the exorbitant prices was just not worth it. I really liked the idea of the restaurant’s menu but unfortunately the execution didn’t do it for me.
Big fan of Jose Andres. Traveling from California. Went in with a reservation, moderate wait time. Food was ok. Served barley warm. Expensive for the overall quality and experience.
I love China Chilcano. I’ve never failed to have a delicious, innovative meal there, & tonight was no different. Service is responsive & helpful, food fabulous.
Loved the character and energy of this place. We ordered the tasting menu and were very pleased with the service and presentation of every dish. Our waiter was polite, never rushed, and very conversational. Added to the experience. Also highly recommend the Picso Sours.
I think the food is fabulous: fresh, creative and delicious! Atmosphere is relaxing and fun. Great for lunch or dinner!!
Interesting, tasty food. Server was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful with our selections. Food came out quickly, nice presentation. Will definitely be back.
Nice ambiance, food was not okay, especially for the price. It wasn't terrible but I would say it's overpriced for what it is.
Food, drinks and service were all wonderful. Typical DC prices for dinner. The only downside was that the tables are pretty tightly spaced, and the servers use large trays, so I found myself dodging trays a couple times, including when I was seated. Would still go back though!
He comido en los restaurantes de Gastón, pero esto fue otra cosa
More of an experience than a meal!
It was pleasant and the food was fairly good. The service was excellent.
Late night meal with friends. Figured out the next day that I had horribly undertipped April—so I have to make that up to her.
Even at the end of the night she and her crew provided excellent service. The tuna was impeccable. Kudos to the outstanding chef!
First time here and we got the Taste of Peru( i believe what its called) It was so good and we left so full about 8 small plates all together. Will come back again and have recommeded it to may friends! Loved it!!
All three of us enjoyed the very distinctive and diverse cuisines on the menu. The service was friendly and attentive even when I couldn’t remember what I had ordered (but the server was correct). Great views from a window seat but way too noisy; other diners said a room on the north side away from the bar was quieter .
Revise the aji de gallina because it was too spicy. I got my stomach upset. It tasted like curry.
Other dishes were great!!
Idk if I would recommend it. Some of the food is outstanding, but it feels like it is trying too hard. It’s crazy loud, so much so that the manager, while explaining some of the menu, suggested he would turn down the music. We made a reservation for 5 and they initially tried to put us right outside the service door to the kitchen at a table for 4 with a promise to add another chair. I love Jose Andrea’s restaurants but this one feels a little off. Maybe just try it for yourself and decide bc I’m still undecided on this one.
A friend and I had a weeknight girl date at China Chilcano and were really impressed. Cocktails were flavorful and creative, the food was outstanding (especially a particular chicken dish and cilantro dumplings), and the prices were totally reasonable. Also, I love supporting Jose Andres' restaurants! Will def be back.
Ceviche and the dessert were really good but just that.
We went on Tuesday Dim Sum night and had a lovely time! Amazing dumplings, chow mein noodles, chilcano (the drink!), and ceviche.
Yummy and perfect for a fun dinner before an event at the Capital One Arena. The service did get pretty slow and spotty when they got really busy. But we still ended up getting to the show on time.
The food was delicious and our waiter was outstanding, despite a very busy night!
Ceviche and causita was delicious
Pisco drink Chilcanos were really good
Interesting and different menu. Delicious!
Good food, nice ambience.
The food was ok but I am Peruvian so expectations were probably unreasonably high
Was not impressed with food. Pisco sour was good and same with dumplings. Rest was kind of mediocre.
I have now taken a handful of picky eaters here and much to my delight they have all loved China Chilcano even though it took them well outside of their comfort zone. Some of the food and ingredients are unfamiliar to me. Everything I have had has been creative, top quality and creative. The decor is especially noteworthy with its distinct Chinese, Japanese and Peruvian sections. As with other José Andrés restaurants I especially want to support this chef who is in my mind a national treasure.
We ordered the tasting menu and it was worth it! The variety of flavors and presentation was great! I would go again and order other things I saw on the menu just because this wass so fantastic!
The lunch in an hour menu is a great value, with tasty and diverse options.
Upbeat and eclectic, this restaurant never disappoints. The menu is inventive but approachable. It's either Asian-influenced Peruvian or Peruvian-influenced Asian depending on what you order. We had an assortment of small plates -- duck, lamb, salmon, noodles and pork bun. We didn't agree on which was best, but we liked them all. The wine list is reasonably priced for the neighborhood. Service is very attentive and helpful with recommendations. Reservations are honored and timely, very important as the wait for a table on a Thursday would have been over an hour. The place is large and the tables very close to each other. Noise level can border on obnoxious if you have the wrong table (i.e. the table next to the cackler who waited an hour at the bar for a table). A minor annoyance. Good place for celebrations, girls night, double dates. Not so much for romance or business. But, absolutely worth a visit. Then again what Jose Andres restaurant isn't?
They didn’t know that this was a birthday dinner, and they didn’t give any free dessert. Just candles.
I was excited to try this restaurant, but after finding out there is no real safe way for a person with seafood allergies to be affected it was difficult to choose from your allergy menu. The reason is you only have 1 fryer and that is a problem. You have people who think they can have the fried Yuca not knowing it's fried in the same oil as your seafood. This is a health concern. The staff did try, but I was scared to eat the meal that was supposed to be Chicken, but is was scrap.
Food was bland, I did not complain because I was in a business meeting and did not want to make things awkward . I have been to this restaurant before but this visit was very disappointing. also the waitress wasn't very good at explaining the menu to us .
Excellent experience, great vibe and the food was amazing!
Food OK but entire restaurant is so loud you must shout across table to be heard. Our server, while nice, forgot to put in food we ordered. Multiple times. Maybe because he couldn’t hear us...
Have already recommended.....staff worked hard to accommodate our large party of 9 on a very busy night........felt appreciated!
