Chart House Restaurant - Monterey Ratings and Reviews
We were very disappointed overall. This was a much looked forward to get away and nice dinner for us. The prime rib was cooked more than what my husband requested and was too dry. He left 1/2 of it behind-not even worth taking home and it was a larger cut. My salmon was very tasty, as was the bread. The mud bottom pie, my all time favorite, was also so disappointing! I got a smaller portion and there was hardly any of the cookie crust or fudge on top. Very different from what I was used to years ago. There was a dollop of whipped cream on the side and chopped peanuts ( what happened to the slivered almonds?) sprinkled all over with chocolate syrup (Hershey’s?) drizzled decoratively about the serving plate. I also left 1/2 of the ice cream since that was what it really mostly was- not much of the pie/fudge part. My husband got the cream brûlée and enjoyed it. The salad bar was very nice. We heard another waiter ask to check the prime rib for his table to make sure it was what they had requested. I wish ours had done that when it was served. We didn’t say anything to our waiter since we’ve heard many stories about people sending food back. We don’t often go to restaurants quite this expensive and loved it when we last went on our 30th anniversary some years ago-which is why it was so disappointing for me this time.
The only good portion of our dinner was ;
Sautéed Mushrooms ,Coffee and Desert
My $39 NY was terrible! At best it was room temperature, the Garlic mash potatoes was the same
The restaurant opened at 5:00 and we were seated by 5:10, at 6:00 our waitress informed us she was going on a dinner break and another waitress would take care of us, strange!
$150 dinner for two, we live on the peninsula and will never return to this restaurant .
We love the Chart House in Monterey - our go-to special occasion because of the oceanfront window seating - love the views, sea otters, seals, birds, and an occasional whale! We have been there three or four times, including for our first two Valentine Day celebrations - very romantic! The food and service are excellent - we loved our server, Brittany, she did an excellent job of taking care of us without being obtrusive. My ahi steak was cooked to perfection as was my fiancé's filet mignon. The chopped salad and hummus appetizers were delicious - love the plantains! The sizzling mushrooms were a perfect compliment to both of our dinners, and the strawberry cheesecake was so delicious and very shareable:) We will be back again and again!
Unfortunately, I cannot give a good review this time. I have been dining at this establishment for many years without any problems. But, on this evening I was somewhat disappointed. I had made my reservation several weeks in advance. I called shortly after making the reservation to see if I could add another couple to our table and was told not at the time I had reserved. I called again just a few days before our reservation to see one more time if we could have a couple join us at our table and again was told no, not at the time we reserved. When we arrived our party of four was seated at a table for six! We could have had our friends join us without any problems but no was our answer. Our waiter was very nice but didn't seem to have the experience you would expect and from what we were use to at this location. There was a foot long hair in one of our deserts (Mud Pie) that was taken care of quickly. We ended the night asking for our bill as we sat there for about 30 minutes waiting for it. Our dining on January 8th at this location was excellent. Sorry I can't give the same quality review.
We ordered drinks at the bar as we waited in the lobby, it took 25 minutes to get our drinks. Then as we were being seated, the host stopped us and had us wait in the middle of the restaurant until he could figure out if our bar tab could be transferred to our table. Embarrassing to say the least.
Almost done with main course when they finally brought the wine
Wanted to order the signature desert - Molten Lava Cake - and was told we should have ordered that when we ordered entrees because it takes 30 minutes to prepare. Would have been nice to be told this when we ordered the entrees, not 10 minutes after we are done eating the entrees
We have been going to Chart House restaurants for over 20 years. Unfortunately, this was our first bad experience with an entree. I ordered steak medallions. They are usually buttery soft. This time, they were full of grizzle, over cooked, unable to cut them. The staff was very nice and replaced my order with prime rib.
This was probably our 20th time at this Chart House, and this time it was the loudest. There was one group of mostly women that was exceedingly loud. That breaks the ambiance of this Chart House. It really interfered with our enjoyment of our meal, which was very good. The salad bar and the entrees are unmatched in quality. If it wasn't for those 12 women, it would have been perfect.
We were treat very well by the staff and they gave us a great table for my girlfriend birthday (we got pretty lucky but there were several very nice tables to be had). She was extremely happy with her meal the view of the full moon rising. The GF had the Maize Shrimp & Scallops which was very good and I had the Savory Shrimp Pasta and it was good but the shrimp were a little over cooked. We also had the Farmers Market Salad which was different but good as well.
The wine list and selection was pretty good with some nice wines that were reasonably priced.
The food is pricey here but not above average for the area, quality of food and the setting, so it not a negative in my opinion it is just about what I expected.
Amazing ambience. Right in the ocean. Fabulous food. Not impressed with server. Talked fast and not really personable. He was nice though. Also, it took a long time for the check to come. My husband waved his arm to finally get someone's attention. It took quite awhile for the food to come. We would definitely go again as we may have a totally good experience the next time. Again, the food and ambience were amazing.
We DEEPLY APPRECIATED the management was open to our observation that the volume of the music was too loud for enjoyment of intimate conversations.
Additionally, we would recommend that the music selection be of a more subtle genre.
The stunning environment should take center place, and the music a supportive background of the unbeatable scenery. We hope this is passed on to "Corporate", whom we have been told, for years, controls the selection of music.
Each Charthouse, due to their multiple and diverse locations, should be allowed to assess the local taste, culture and make the ultimate musical selections.
The only additional recommendation is that the Salad Bar continues to need improvement. We were there at initial opening and the iceberg lettuce was less than fresh, brown, aging at the edges which is unexpected and disappointing. Especially at the beginning of the evening.
My wife and I informed the restaurant that we were celebrating our 46th wedding anniversary. They gave us a window table per our request and menus recognizing our anniversary. Server was very slow attending to us, the restaurant wasn't that busy. He asked if we wanted some bread and butter and kept promising hot bread fresh from the oven, but it was never delivered. Wife and I ordered chopped salad to share. Server brought one single serving to the table with two small plates, no serving utensils. We split the salad ourselves with our dinner silverware. The silverware was not replaced. Salad should have been split in the kitchen. Wife ordered topping for her fish to be served on the side. It wasn't. The topping was supposed to have tomatoes and avocado. No avocado. When we asked where the avocado was, the server checked with the kitchen and he returned to tell us that they were out of avocado. The check was delivered to the table with no further acknowledgement of our anniversary. I deliberated whether to ask for the manager. After probably 5 minutes, I finally did ask a bus boy for the manager and he arrived to our table just prior to the server bringing us a complimentary piece of cake, for our anniversary. Keep in mind the check had been delivered several minutes earlier. Manager appreciated our concerns and made a small adjustment to our bill.
We will NEVER be back. This was our 4th visit, previous 3 were all good. We had come for our 25, 4 years ago, so we wanted to return for our 29th.
Waiter was green. Didn’t know what bernaise sauce was? Got manager involved, said cook won’t make it. That’s ludicrous for a steak house, especially one like this.
This event ruined are night, an anniversary night.
We later found out that restaurant is under new management, and upon telling to front desk greeters, they indicated that this was a regular occurrence.
They obviously don’t care if we return, however, many folks know about our experience, and they will not go either.
