We welcome large parties, but do not take large reservations online. For parties of 8 or more, please call during business hours.
The bar patrons were excessively noisy. We couldn’t even hear our waitress talking to us and have a conversation at our table because of the loud conversations at the bar. There was confusion about the availability of desserts, although the wait help was very good and attentive I would classify the food average
Warm friendly service from Jenitza.
Nice selection of local/regional craft beers.
My wife’s lobster grilled cheese sandwich was amazing.
My brunch was delicious
Look forward to dining again here when we’re in Mystic
Very good service. My partner’s entree of blackened Mahi was so overdone and tasteless. Especially after surgically requesting the fish be done moist and medium. They killed it. My seared tuna was very mediocre.
The wait person was lovely though, and she exchanged the Mahi for a hamburger as my partner was afraid to give the Mahi another chance. He enjoyed the burger and said to me that Chapter One is only good for burgers.
This is the 2nd time eating at Chapter One giving it another opportunity. Unfortunately the 1st time we had not so good service, this time it was exceptional. Food has always been excellent.
It was fine
This is our second time to Chapter One and we really enjoy the food and staff—dinner is always nicely presented and very tasty! A stand out place!
A friend introduced us to Chapter One in August & we loved it. We brought other friends to enjoy this great restaurant! Buck a shuck oysters during happy hour is our favorite way to start the evening followed by the stuffed dates which are heavenly! My husband loves the burger, cooked rare as he likes it but rarely receives at many restaurants. Every one was very pleased with their meals. Our server was wonderful!
Would recommend for the quality of the food - outstanding. However, the ambience was terrible. Noise so loud the three at our table could not hear each other the majority of the time. Acoustics were awful! It didn’t help that the foursome next to us had two women with the shrillest, high-octave voices I’ve ever heard and they frequently laughed uproariously, drowning out all tables around them. Service was acceptable. Food was outstanding!
We ordered two different salads, they were okay. We had a specialty cocktail, it tasted like straight liquor, even though it was touted to contain several other flavored ingredients. We ordered the Cajun mac and cheese, chicken piccata, and the scallop risotto. The mac and cheese was not spicy, and the cheese sauce had a gritty texture. The chicken was juicy but the sauce needed more capers, and possibly some garlic? My husband said the risotto was good, however it arrived at the table 5 minutes after everyone else’s meals. Dessert was acceptable but nothing remarkable. The music has booming base and is SO loud a comfortable conversation cannot be held.
The music was sooooo loud that we couldn’t even hear the waitress or each other. We wanted to walk out as soon as we walked into the restaurant. I recommend that they turn the music down. After all we went to dinner not a night club.
The mussels were good and tender and the sauce it was in was very good. This was the only food we liked. The Caesar Salad was overdressed and the dressing was really strong (floral, yet lemony). It was just greens with hard croutons for the price point would have expected fresh sliced Parmesan and better presentation. The calamari had a thick batter and was very heavy to eat the sauce was okay, but the calamari flavor was lost. The waitstaff had too many tables and were literally running around crazy from table to table. The table set up was very tight where we were originally asked to sit. I could barely fit to get to the seat. There were many tables set up that were reserved for later seatings which were more spacious. The atmosphere of the place is nice, but not stuffy. I would am glad we did not order entrees though as the prices are pretty steep and we only liked a 1/3 of our food.
We were enticed to try Chapter One for dinner by the menu that featured a number of vegetarian options and interesting descriptions of entree preparations. The portions were nicely sized and presented well. Unfortunately, they were just ok. The food was a bit bland. The service was very good and the restaurant itself is nice on the inside.
I had ordered the NY Strip. The steak I was served was substandard but our server knew I was not happy and went the extra mile to ensure it was replaced with it being properly cook. Her name is Janitza (pardon the spelling) but she is a gem! Soup (New England Clam) was luke warm.
Date night, we wanted to try a different restaurant on our way home and stopped in Mystic. Great little town with walking distance attractions. We chose this restaurant because it appears new. Rustic interior, a little bit tight with seating so we chose not to have a high top; we were unfortunately sat at a high top and told we couldn’t have a regular table. Service was excellent, food was excellent, noise level high but the bar and dining area are next to each other. We left pleased with full bellies, could not fit dessert. Cute place.
My wife is gluten free and there were great options here. The scallop risotto was fantastic. And the yellow font tuna was great. We will be back!
Very disappointing. Service was very spotty, waits between appetizer and entree, and entree and dessert were twice as long as they should be. Food was okay but overpriced. Feel like this place might be better at lunchtime.
Great food and service!
My girlfriend and I had a lovely time. The service was excellent and we loved the food. Only drawback was the noisiness of the bar and the coversition to a loud dance club at ten. But the owner was gracious and apologetic about the circumstance.
The food was good, however, we waited 55 minutes for our food to arrive. The waitress was attentive. Not sure if we’d return.
Very average. We were the only ones in there. My seared tuna was so stringy I had trouble cutting it with a knife.
Others’ dinners not good either.
Sat at the bar and had great service and great food.
Excellent grilled shrimp! Tuna dish just ok. Excellent service! Loud!
We had a 6:15 reservation. We arrived 10 minutes early. Restaurant was empty. Upon being shown to our table (the worst in the house-table for 2 in a back corner ) we asked for a different table. We were told no other tables were available. We opted for 2 seats at a common high top. When we were leaving the restaurant after dinner, 8 tables were still empty.
The food was excellent. Unfortunately, we waited for an hour before our entrees were delivered, so not sure if it was the kitchen or server. However, several parties were seated after us and had their entrees before us. Very disappointing
We enjoyed our food from the states to the entrees. The service was a bit spotty as our waitress seemed to be very busy. But all in all a very enjoyable meal.
I can’t say I was impressed. The noise level is deafening, we were seated at a table that required us to move it away from the wall to be able to eat, and the staff seemed somewhat distracted. I watched the hostess set and reset the same high-top table 3 times before someone was seated, and stayed, seated at it.
We had the “special” blueberry cocktail, it was nothing special. The bread was good, slightly dry, but the dipping oil was very flavorful.
My chicken meal was dry, the sauce tasteless, and the sides were all but forgettable. My husband had the oysters, one of each type available, they weren’t marked so he had no idea which he liked. He had the pasta and scallop meal, which he said was tasty.
Service very slow with only one person waiting tables
Initially attentive service but that didn’t last. Place wasn’t busy yet over half an hour wait for our main courses and no apology or explanation. Two of the meals came in two stages, five minutes apart. Had to ask twice for water refill. Food was OK but not memorable
Won’t be rushing back
Definitely a place you will want to try if you're staying near or in Mystic. It's location is perfect for a little shopping before dinner & drinks. If you like the night life, you have come to the right spot, as the evening goes on the music becomes louder and the lights become dimmer. The restaurant turns into a club filled with energy! Drinks, dinner, dancing as the night goes on! You won't be disappointed with this choice!
we had brunch here on Sat - it was very good food and service. Restaurant wasnt crowded which was GREAT. apparently they do a nice bar/evening business but dont discount it for breakfast folks.
Janitza was a wonderful server - informative, friendly and attentive. The food was delicious.
Only down side might be the noise on a busy night as I didn’t see any noise-dampening measure taken and it was loud with only a few tables.
Great food. Our server was spectacular. Great time
Our food was excellent and quickly served! We had the hot lobster roll, scallops and a burger. Each was terrific. Our waitress was also great!
Good food at prices expected for downtown mystic. I would def go again.
Due to a "conflict" they gave my table away. Then we went back at the end of the night, for some sort of redemption arc try, got two drinks which were bad, and left.
the food and service was horrible. Wrong appetizer was delivered, service was really slow, and food is not up to par. I ordered a 43 dollar bouillabaisse that had tuna that wasnt fresh at all. it had a funky after taste that i didnt bother touching it. Appetizer was mediocre. Not a meal worth spending 140 dollars on
It was our First time at Chapter One and we really enjoyed our meal. The food was outstanding. The waitstaff was attentive, as well. We will definitely dine there again when we visit Mystic.
Wow, what a fantastic review... thank you so much! We greatly appreciate you taking the time to leave such great feedback for us. We strive for excellence, from food to service, and are so happy you enjoyed your experience with us here at Chapter One Food & Drink. Hope to see you again soon!
The food was great! The service was the worst we’ve had in recent memory. My husband and I were so disappointed that somehow it took 45 after ordering them to get 2 jumbo shrimp from the raw bar- does that even make sense to anyone?!?!?!?
Dawn, It was great speaking with you, and we will most definitely take the appropriate steps in resolving the issues that occurred. We hope to see you back again soon! Best,
We were seated by the open window which was amazing ambiance, but our drinks took so long to come out that we had finished our app for over ten minutes before they came out. My martini was warm and my husband’s drink was watered down from the ice melting. The civeche was too lemony and the scallops were perfect, while the risotto was too tomato-y and also a bit hard— I couldn’t even finish it.
