Cavan Ratings and Reviews
Sunday brunch and ate on porch. Nice. Service was fine. Tasty Bloody Mary. The corn fritter was good and enough for two to share. Wife had the chicken salad croissant sandwich on home made bread. Very good. Only downside was the special duck hash with egg. Duck was way undercooked and needed to go back. Overall, good place if you're in the area but probably not worth a special trip considering all the options for Sunday brunch.
Unfortunately our meal was simply mediocre. The food was underwhelming at best, though quite salty and everything kind of tasted the same; the service was friendly enough, but we were often forgotten; the timing was poor - it took over an hour for food to arrive; and the staff seemed completely oblivious to their wrongdoings. The only blessing was the lovely front yard and pleasant weather. Sadly, we will not be going back.
On the other hand, Cavan’s sister restaurant Meauxbar is outstanding!
Service and ambiance were great, it's a really cute place. Hopefully our experience was a fluke, but the food was just ok. Ordered the roast beef debris Benedict for brunch and it took 40 minutes to come out....cold. Asked for a hot one and they sent out another that was also cold. They were really nice about it and comped it, but after that experience I wouldn't recommend this place for brunch. Good happy hour though!
We were there for Thanksgiving. Several of us had items from the regular menu which all had New Orleanian touches. Even the turkey dinner was a combination of "traditional" and "local" (such as the shrimp sauce on the stuffing). I'm definitely going back to try more of the menu. In addition, the decor was interesting (like eating in a mansion from the 1800's) and they have convenient parking!
The sunflower seed "risotto" was superb. One of the most unique appetizers I have ever had, a must have!! Also the turtle carbonaro was rich and delicious, with the turtle meat coming off with and osso buco texture and non gamey at all. Go for it!! Unless your starving, you have some left over and it's just as wonderful the next day. Bravo Chef!
We love the atmosphere of Cavan. It was nice to feel relaxed and not rushed almost like it was a home meal. The food was outstanding. I don't normally enjoy dessert because it is so sugary but the Smore's dessert shocked me by being creamy and decedent without being especially sweet. Everything we ate was wonderful and the team was extremely friendly and welcoming. It is expensive but you get what you pay for with the food quality. However the service was what was a bit lacking. There was only two servers in the room and that was fine overall but they seemed to be really hustling and there wasn't a "back waiter" to just refill water, bring silverware, and other small things that keep a guest from having to wait and flag someone down. The manager did come by and check on us several times and was very kind, it just seems like it's a place that is "so close" to be awesome but just has a few tweaks to make.
Cavan is a uniquely decorated, large Home converted to a casual yet upscale restaurant. Vibrant, fun interior with excellent service and even better food. Reservations would be smart for dinner or Brunch. I had the Roast Beef Benedict on this visit and it was savory and delicious! Great cocktails and the best key lime pie I’ve ever tasted in my life! The prices are a little higher than some because the food is a lot better than most! Definitely worth your time! Great patio for people watching and two bars inside!
Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Cavan. Note: I marked the service low due to the fact that our waiter was not up to par. He spoke really quietly in a loud restaurant and misheard our entree selections. He took inordinately long to fill water and checking in at the table. In New Orleans I rarely am in a hurry or worry about "quick" service. In this case, I had to look for someone to assist with a question, get an item or wonder where a dish or drink was. They may have been short staffed that night as it was very busy.
Everything else was top notch as I would expect from the Meauxbar/Sylvain family of restaurants. We enjoyed the boudin tater tots (really intriguing to have potato and boudin) and the Tacos to start and the whole fish and pork chop were stupendous!! The spices on the outside of both were enticing and sutble at the same time!
I would be lax if I did not mention that the cocktail menu was also full of well considered and flavorful creations!
I have been there several times and it was always nice. Friday the downstairs sound system was way too loud. And upstairs was a group of about 15 people who felt like that area was just for them. The restaurant has changed to accommodate a younger crowd and is not the neighborhood gem it once was. So sad.
The setting, service and food were all superb. We loved everything we had and our server was attentive, friendly and efficient. We hail from the San Francisco area, so are very serious about our food. This restaurant is a "must do" for anyone who lives in NOLA or is visiting there.
We were a party of 4 and we go out about every two weeks, had spoken to one of the staff members and she told me about it. With that I picked that as I will try, all four of us liked it.
That is not normal for us somebody always said I did not care for what ever. But every one in our party of 4 liked what they got. The drinks were good didn't get desert but should have.
Great place I will go back.
Have been a few times for brunch but this was first time for dinner. Food was solid but nothing special (and a bit salty) though the variety of selection was impressive. Service was on point and the atmosphere is always lovely. Overall, a pleasant experience and we'll be back at some point...
I have been several times. It is a very cool place. I drinks at the upstairs bar and then went downstairs for our reservation. Everything was great but it took a while to get our food. I am in the industry so I now how things can get backed up in the kitchen.
My second time to Cavan and it did not disappoint. The Duck breast was excellent but by far the best bite I had was from my wife's Key Lime Pie. OMG! Not too sweet and definitely not too tart lime most are. It was sublime! (see what I did there?!). Go by all means!
We went for dinner at 6.30, table was ready inside, all outside tables were taken. Food was innovative and tasty, I had the rabbit, others the fish dishes. All were excellent and so was the service. It is a little noisy, some of the other customers were very rowdy but overall it was a great experience and I will be going again soon.
