About this restaurant

  • Lively
  • Good for groups
  • Great for brunch
Carmel transports the energy, culture, and flavor of the renowned outdoor marketplace “Shuk HaCarmel” to Melrose Avenue, in the heart of LA’s food scene.

Using some of the oldest techniques in the world— a wood-burning oven, an open flame grill— chef Asaf Maoz interprets ancient Levantine cooking traditions through a modern lens.

Dishes showcase the best of the season: farmer’s market produce, sustainably-sourced meats and seafood, all prepared with the global culinary influence of the Tel Aviv shuk. Breads are baked in-house, including a 72-hour fermented Moroccan Frena, baked to order in the wood-fire oven.

I was a first-time visitor here on a recent trip to LA; The menu looks great and the food was really great, but the service and other factors definitely impacted my dining experience. First, I arrived right at 9:15 p.m. for my reservation at that time, but was told my table wasn't ready. I got lucky enough to find a spot at the bar, which I eventually gave up to someone who had ordered food there that arrived before my seat at the chef's counter was ready (before that, nobody made me aware I could order food at the bar). I'm usually not bothered by a wait, but it was 9:41 (26 minutes late) when I was finally seated; also, I'd missed a metro train going there and spent $40+ on an Uber so I wouldn't be 20 min late for my res, which I wouldn't have done had they just shot me a message to say things were running behind. I'd studied the menu when seated at the bar, so I was pretty well ready to order pending one question about ingredients. I was seated for 6 min before a server acknowledged me, and wasn't even brought water for another 6 minutes after that. Before he left to get an answer to my question (and get water) I ordered the glass of wine I knew I'd want with my first course regardless of what it was. When he came back with the question answered and water (finally), but no wine, I placed my food order, including reminding him of the wine I wanted with my salad, and also the wine I wanted with my main. The salad was dropped by someone else and that first wine never came, so I canceled it when the main came (and he said he'd be back soon with the wine for that course). When that came, he said "I'm giving you a generous pour since I forgot the last one, " but he only poured 4.5 oz and I could tell there was only 1 oz left in the bottle that he didn't just give me. The food was excellent, though. The music is very loud. Not a problem for me BUT anyone at a party of 4+ ends up having to scream to be heard, so all you hear is screeching voices, which sucks.

One of the best dining experiences my partner and I have had in LA! We will be returning :) From the moment we entered we were greeted immediately and with kindness. All of the staff were very professional and caring. The ambiance was the first thing that caught my attention. I was driving by one day and, of course in LA traffic, I noticed how beautiful the building and interior looked. Our server Sebastian showed us outstanding service; from his attention to detail, knowledge of the menu/food, caring demeanor, great personality we knew we were in for a good dining experience! Sebastian coursed out our dinner perfectly! We started with some light seafood bites; the kampachi crudo was yummy! The pistachios added a delicious crunch and flavor. The hamachi ceviche was also so good! The San Diego bluefin tuna tartare was so fresh and delicious! The grilled Asparagus was so unique and one of our favorites! The sea scallops was outstanding! This one stood out to us the most. All of the seafood was so fresh and light we could have eaten seconds and thirds of it and not felt overstuffed. Next course we had both of the salads; super fresh, tasty and perfectly dressed! I'd highly recommend both! We also had the mushroom cigar and that one wasn't our favorite. The shell wasn't very tasty. The sauce added some flavor but won't be getting that one again. For our final courses we got the steak kabob & salmon skewer. Both were cooked perfectly, juicy and flavorful! I'd highly recommend both! Drink wise we both don't drink alcohol but enjoyed both of the mocktails and a nonalcoholic wine! I'd say I enjoyed the spritz more. The Paloma was on the sweeter side. The spritz was refreshing and went perfectly with this lighter fare. I can't recall the type of wine we had but it was white and very delicious! Tasted exactly like a really Pinot Grigio. If you live in or visit LA I'd highly recommend this spot! We look forward to returning soon :)
