Our favorite restaurant in NW. The roast chicken is superb. Steak Frites a close second. Salivating just writing about it. Cozy, with fireplace, attentive helpful staff- a wonderful experience. You, too, will be coming back again and again.
I returned to Cafe Nell again and again because the food is always good, the ambience and service is top-notch, I love the space and you have parking! David is my favorite waiter but they are all superb.
Went to brunch. Food was good and I would recommend
From beginning to end, nothing but a great place to be with friends, share good food and drink. Service, atmosphere, plates, and cocktails - all top notch. Don’t hesitate, get here now!
Café Nell is always one of my favorites. The food and service is excellent!
Always a cozy treat to come here, especially in the winter when the fire is going in the main dining room and the lighting is just so. Great ambiance and delicious food. Service was a little slow/scattered, but they had a couple of large parties to contend with. I highly recommend this restaurant for friends, family or for a date.
Too noisy with a table that had a company meal taking place. Moved to the quieter bar.
Delicious food, a cool ambiance, great service and the prices were reasonable. One of the biggest bonuses was there is a parking lot. I know that sounds weird, but it is so hard to park in NW that it makes coming down to dine a chore.
I love Cafe Nell and usually do my birthday brunch there every year. This year was a bit of a let down. I had a reservation and yet my family (who drove for an hour to meet me) and I ended up waiting nearly 30 min to get seated. Once seated it took another 10min for a server to come by. The food was good, but it didn't feel like they cared that much and definitely didn't do anything to acknowledge it was a special occasion or make up for the lengthy wait (they usually bring me a cinnamon roll with a candle).
I’ve always loved Cafe Nell but this brunch was an anomaly. Ran out of English breakfast tea, served dry toast without jam or butter, and breakfast potatoes were cold and not crispy. A disappointment!
Our favorite go-to place because of the quality of the food, the great service and the nice atmosphere.
We had a late reservation to celebrate the New Year, but when we ordered our entrees, sadly many options were sold out. Seems a miss not to plan for the late night crowd on New Year’s Eve.
Our server last Sunday evening, Dec. 29th was FABULOUS! Love him.
Overall the food and atmosphere was great! I had the roasted chicken and it was amazing. Although the customer service we received was sub par at best. Unfortunately the service was slow despite there not being many people in the restaurant. I was celebrating my birthday with my friends and when were finished with our meals, I asked the waitress if there was any sort of free birthday dessert, she told me yes and to pick out any dessert. I ordered the brownie which was delicious, but was shocked when received my bill to find that I was charged for the dessert. I asked the waitress why I was charged since she said it was free, and she said “only the candle is free.” What a joke. I felt gypped. I had to just suck it up and pay for it but left the restaurant feeling really deceived. I don’t know if I’ll be back, maybe it was just a bad night but definitely didn’t feel the best after my experience at Cafe Nell, unfortunately.
Cafe Nell is one of our very favorite spots in Portland! Mary always takes care of us so beautifully and the ambiance can’t be beat! Love it!!
Great Brunch. Have comb back mane times
Food and service was great.
All in all, it was a great experience on Christmas Eve. My only issue was that they had numerous replacements for menu items, and were out of several things. It was only 6pm, so seems as though they should have had more of their menu items available that early in the night. What they did have was excellent, and the service was phenomenal. Will definitely be back!
The restaurant is beautiful, very happy we made a reservation. We noticed that we weren’t the only people looking for the happy hour menu which they weren’t offering because it was Christmas Eve. They also seemed to be running out of a few things by the time we sat, which was 5:30pm. Our server brought my wine and then walked past us about 10-15 times before taking our order, in which time they ran out of oysters which was disappointing. It was a beautiful space and the steak special was great, however I found their chicken special to be dry and underwhelming.
The cafe was packed to capacity with Christmas Eve diners so the staff was really going full steam. Service was attentive and we were fortunate to have made a reservation. The food was tasty with numerous selections to satisfy the brunch palette. Love going to Cafe Nell. The atmosphere is so inviting.
First time here. Expectations were higher based on friend's recommendtions.
We really enjoyed our brunch. Our server was nice and checked-in before and after our food was brought to us. Our meal was hot, tasty, and generous portions. No complaints! We will be back, and soon!
We had a lovely brunch. Friends celebrating the holiday. Food was great! Atmosphere was enjoyable and service was good!
This will always be a go to for our family!!
5:30 reservation with many empty tables. We were offered the smallest and worst possible table. Asked to change and was told that the table we were given was our only option. Host was not very gracious about it either. The place was roasting hot from the fireplace and smelled strongly of gas or artificial fireplace fumes. Waited some time for a server and then decided that we did not want to stay, so we left and informed host that we were not happy with the table or accommodations. Host was not concerned or apologetic at all. Attitude is everything !!!!
Great wait staff! Easy to please menu and a lovely atmosphere. We are putting this spot into the rotation for family dinners.
Love this place—the right size, right service, right cuisine.
We have been here many times and I have written many reviews. As usual the food and service is excellent with attentive but not intrusive wait staff. I had the pork chop which was cooked to perfection and my wife had the Nell turkey burger. Both were cooked to perfection and very tasty. If you are looking for a nice place with good food and service try Cafe Nell. You wont be disappointed.
Such a great, cozy neighborhood spot to have a pre-holiday dinner with friends!
We love this place!
This was the second time my wife and I have taken another couple to Cafe Nell for Sunday brunch, and this time was even better than the first. My biscuits and gravy was wonderful, and I'm pretty picky about Bs & G. Everyone enjoyed their good. The ambience is top notch. Lots of windows, a cozy dining room with a gas fireplace, and a Euro-Bistro decor. The food at Cafe Nell is consistently good. And they take reservations for Sunday brunch, so no need to arrive at the restaurant and find out the wait is 30 or 45 minutes like happens so many places in brunch-crazy Portland. It's nice to meet friends at Cafe Nell at the appointed time and know that you'll be immediately seated. Highly recommend Cafe Nell to anyone looking for a tasty brunch in a lovely atmosphere with no wait.
Service was fantastic!!
Table wasn’t available until 45 minutes after reservation. Did nothing to earn the mandatory 20% gratuity because we had a large party.
Everything was fabulous. Chris was a great wait person and made some excellent suggestions. Will definitely go there again
Would have been great to have at least 1 other gf vegan option on the menu and some desserts to accommodate food allergies. The table was a bit cramped but everything else was really great. We enjoyed being near the fireplace.
There was a sense that every single person, waitress, waiters, host, manager, truly enjoyed people and that came out in their friendliness, their patience, their service, all of which adds to a lovely evening. And then of course the food —- terrific! Enough choices for those not watching their waistlines (for that night anyway) and those conscious of food choices and all delicious and wonderfully presented. We will definitely return!
Our group of ‘mature’ dance ladies, meet often for lunch and Nell’s is one of our favorite places. We always ask for David, to be our server, as he is so accommodating and nice. The food is always good and varied and reasonably priced. We will be back.
Always love our experience at Cafe Nell
Cafe Nell has become almost our restaurant of choice. We continue to have great experiences.
