One of the best meals we have ever had. The feel of the restaurant was special. We were, by chance, put at what was one of the best tables in the house - the rectangular four top tucked across from the bar. The decor is tavern meets speakeasy, with lots to look at and ask about. Our server Kevin was OUTSTANDING. Lovely, knowledgeable (about the food, wine and history), and had perfect timing. He was there when we needed him and not when we didn't. The food was spectacular. We were with friend so ate with abandon. We shared four appetizers - grilled beets with strawberries, goat cheese and candied walnuts. I didn't notice the grill on the beets and would have preferred smaller cuts, but it was delicious. The beef carpaccio with crispy homefries topped bitter greens (to cut the richness) was perfection. The scallops drove the entire table to applaud. We also had fried green tomatoes and burrata. How could it be bad? It wasn't, but was voted the least special of the four choices. For dinner we had the longest standing and most expensive item on the menu - the Steak Chinois, filet of beef, tamari-ginger pan sauce, gruyere-thyme potatoes. It was perfection and deemed absolutely worth it. We also had the halibut which was much lighter and equally delicious. Delicate, perfectly crisp on top and sitting on a delectable lemon sauce to die for. We never have dessert but one of our guests is gluten free so we decided to have the chocolate almond cake. That started the dessert train rolling, so we also went with the sticky toffee pudding. Both was met by rave reviews from all and deemed worth leaving feeling overly stuffed. The wine was fabulous and reasonably priced. We couldn't imagine a better ambiance and meal. The restaurant has four rooms. All very different in vibe and feel. We were invited by the staff to take a tour after dinner and would recommend asking for the bar room or the outdoor, but covered patio. The top floor is beautiful and good for a large group.

James was attentive, friendly and took as much time as we needed to order. Also made an extra effort to show us a bottle of liquor we had not heard of. The food was delicious!

Everything was delicious, from the bread and butter to the delightful first course (fresh pasta) and then the entrée! C&O knocked it out of the park with the duck. I need to mention the dessert: Fabulous frozen custard. Our server was spot on, attentive, and not overbearing. What a great way to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. WE WILL BE BACK.

Overall a very good standard American fare restaurant with good food and cocktails. We were sat upstairs and we felt it was a little cramped/noisy and the ambiance was not as nice as what it seemed downstairs.

A Charlottesville institution for a reason: consistently excellent, quality ingredient forward food. Great cocktails too.

This was my first moderate disappointment at C&O. We were seated in the main floor which was too crowded to be comfortable. I much prefer upstairs. Our knees were colliding under the table. The staff were pleasant. The carpaccio was impressively tasty. The wagyu steak, less so. The meal was tasty but I found it overly salted this time - something I rarely detect as I am fond of salt. I was surprised in 2025 that no gluten free bread options were available. 1% of the population is estimated to have celiac disease so the needs of those customers are ignored. This contrasts with wonderful GF bread that is offered at Marigold in town (and others).

Excellent cuisine in a quiet and civilized setting. We had the soft shell crab appetizer, a salad, the bavet steak special and duck confit with gnocchi. The desserts were sticky toffee pudding and a house mocha coupe (sundae). All the food was excellent with huge props to the chef on the expertly cooked and very large soft shell crab. The gnocchi were also amazing pillows of delight! Our server was solicitous and quietly friendly --she helped on the wine selection and made sure the kitchen got us out and done in time for our concert. We enjoyed every moment at the outstanding gem of a restaurant!

Server was just average for the price point of the restaurant. He did not really offer any expertise in particular when talking about the wine.

Our server, Sarah, was so warm and friendly--and knowledgeable about the menu and wine list--that she made an outstanding meal even better.
