Welcome to Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse, where Japanese Soul Food meets American BBQ by James Beard Nominated Chef Michael Lewis. “Japanese Smokehouse” is defined as merging Japanese ingredients and flavors with American BBQ techniques, and everything in between.

Menu highlights include light and refreshing dishes such as Wagyu Tataki with house kimchee, yuzu kosho and savory soy or Tuna Takaki with fire roasted peppers + ponzu, to bolder flavors such as Smoked Pastrami Short Rib with toasted rye, fire roasted kimchi + yuzu pickles. We are currently open 7 days a week.

Please note, our dining room consists of booths, regular tables and high-tops. We will try our best to accommodate you at your prefer location, but sometimes it is not possible due to party size. Our outdoor tables can be requested but not guaranteed when booking on open table.

    Happy with all the dishes we ordered. My favorite thing was the bok choy and s’mores tart. We wanted to try something from the smoker, but they were out of all of the beef. Wasn’t in the mood for chicken and don’t eat pork. So that was disappointing.

    Wonderful First Time Dining Experience at Ukiah!! The food and service were extraordinary! My husband and I ordered the tasting menu as an introduction to the restaurant. The dishes were creative and absolutely delicious! The service was excellent. We loved our whole experience! We’ll be back.

    This is my third time in Ukiah, and it never disappoints!!! Definitely one of my very favorite restaurants in Asheville (and there are TONS). Already looking forward to a next time!!!!

    Hands down, one of the MOST EXCEPTIONAL restaurants in Asheville ~ and gives exceptional restaurants everywhere a run for their money! Everything is made from scratch with intention and attention to detail, and you can taste the difference. Every bite you put in your mouth is amazingly and excitingly delicious... flavor explosions in the best possible way. Craft cocktails were all fantastic, mocktails too. I brought the fellow foodies in my family who were visiting from out-of-town for the weekend, and my hard-to-please brother-in-law from Philly wants to come all the way back to Asheville to eat at Ukiah for his birthday. I'm an Asheville native and I've been to Ukiah 4 times (a few with just one other person, and a few times with a group) and everyone has always raved about how awesome this place is. We all love the tapas-style plates that make it easy to try, enjoy, and share a bunch of different things. Some stand-out favorites: the fried beech mushrooms, the burrata, the tuna tataki, the salmon sashimi, the Japanese sweet potato, and the brisket plate. I also want to add something that beyond the quality of the food, something that's even more important to me is how a restaurant treats it's employees and I like to patronize places that are good to their own people. I know someone who's worked at Ukiah for over a year, and can vouch for the fact that the owner and upper management treat the employees really well. They treat the restaurant and workers like a family environment — employees all eat a family meal together every night before the place opens for the public, and the staff are treated with respect. You don't have to take my word for it though, because you can feel it in the environment and you'll notice it on the faces of the staff while you're there. Enjoy!!!

    YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS PLACE. Ukiah never disappoints me, absolutely wonderful dinner each time we go here. It is such an unusual menu and it’s all wonderfully plated and sooooo good. I cannot give enough accolades about the staff, food and atmosphere. Definitely make reservations and enjoy.
