Welcome to Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse, where Japanese Soul Food meets American BBQ by James Beard Nominated Chef Michael Lewis. “Japanese Smokehouse” is defined as merging Japanese ingredients and flavors with American BBQ techniques, and everything in between.

Menu highlights include light and refreshing dishes such as Wagyu Tataki with house kimchee, yuzu kosho and savory soy or Tuna Takaki with fire roasted peppers + ponzu, to bolder flavors such as Smoked Pastrami Short Rib with toasted rye, fire roasted kimchi + yuzu pickles. We are currently open 7 days a week.

Please note, our dining room consists of booths, regular tables and high-tops. We will try our best to accommodate you at your prefer location, but sometimes it is not possible due to party size. Our outdoor tables can be requested but not guaranteed when booking on open table.

    Mother's Day Brunch is the perfect way to celebrate the person who works tirelessly to keep it all together! Chef Michael Lewis and Ian O’Shaughnessy have been working hard to put together your favorite's including our favorite Ukiah Benedict with smoked pastrami, 2 poached eggs, yuzu hollandaise + shishito-cheddar biscuit, Breakfast Ramen with tonkotsu-egg broth, maple shichimi bacon + sunny side egg and Banana Bourbon French Toast. Each Mom will be receiving a slice of Chef's Mom Coconut Cake in celebration of his own mom, who shared the recipe for this delicious treat when he opened his first restaurant. Accompanying your feast, will will be serving signature brunch cocktails from your favorite Bloody Mary, Mimosas and thirst quenching Pear Spritzes. We look forward to having you!

    Amazing and unique food, a little intimidating for first time patrons but wait staff was very helpful in making choices which all turned out well. Bar turnaround for drink orders was **fast**. Highly recommend planning to spend 15-20 minutes prior to reservation time to finding a parking space unless you luck out and find one close by. The crowd was fun & festive. All seemed to enjoy their time spent there. We did and hope to return when in the Asheville area again.

    Crispy Ribs, I almost panicked when I didn’t immediately note them on the menu. Fear not, they are still there. Our server, Matthew, was a delight. Knowledgeable, efficient and fun to chat with. Thanks for a lovely evening.

    Ukiah is one of our favorites and a friend recommended the tasting menu...we should have stuck to ordering what we love...Hamachi, bok choy, waygo beef and the dumplings. We wanted to try more things but I guess we don't like the traditional ones. Lovely cocktails, great service and we enjoy sitting at the cool bar!

    For a lifelong Asheville resident this for the past three years is my favorite restaurant in all of Asheville. I try to go as many times as I can and excited to see that brunch is back!!! The biscuits and gravy is what dreams are made of. There’s so many wonderful things on the menu that we could never decide. Definitely worth checking out.

    The service was good but slow. I suggest that they have a full time bartender. The waitstaff makes the drinks for their own tables which slows the service down. We have been there many times and had not had this experience before. Maybe they will correct this soon.

    Dined in for my boyfriend’s birthday last night. It was our first time here and it won’t be our last! The menu was a little confusing at first but our server Christopher was patient and kind and explained everything so we were comfortable and confident in our ordering. Thank you for making such a wonderful and memorable night for us! We couldn’t stop talking about how amazing everything was the rest of the night!
