Our special occasion was our 26th Anniversary and it did not disappoint!!
The moment that we made contact at the front to let them know that we were here for our reservation the magic had been made! They handed my wife and I to the Hostess which took us to our table not to mention while escorting us made mentioned to tell us Happy Anniversary and had us at a very special table in which I was so impressed with. It’s like they really cared about how special this evening would be and I so appreciated that! They sat us at a table that was directly in front of a very large fireplace and kept the tables around us empty. Can you believe that? It was such a romantic setting that I have never experienced at any other restaurant and we have dined at some very high-end restaurants but this was very special. I would like to really think the management for arranging this for us. But now for the food. The food was absolutely outstanding from the appetizers to the Main course I could have never asked for anything better, this is going to be one of our favorite places to come in the future thank you thank you you have created such a great memory for us Butcher Shop of San Diego you are truly one of the great restaurants of San Diego!!
Always like to go here for a decent steak or prime rib!
Fireside dining on a early Friday evening was wonderful! Our Sunset dinner menu choices were perfect. We always look forward to revisiting our favorite dinner spot! Great cocktails, perfectly aged steaks and special desserts.

Food was honestly the best we have ever had! I order the filet and my husband order the rib-eye. It was cooked perfectly. The only negative was we had a 7:30 reservation and they were not able to seat us until 8. Of course we were starving even before, so it made it feel like forever; however, we will be back. The food and service, once seated, was impeccable, just a long wait to get in.
Had a great birthday for our friend celebration of 75 years. Filet mignon perfect and food delicious.
Our waitress was extraordinary. She was on top of every phase of the lunch. She immediately took care of an error I made when I realized it and walked back into the restaurant. Service and honesty was very commendable as well as great food and attention to all my guests at the table.
The food was delicious, and the service couldn’t have been better! Very enjoyable lunch with dear friends!
We really enjoyed our dinner. Great food and service. Noise level.was a little loud but eventually settled.
I go to the butcher shop all the time and is why I plan my birthday dinner which was included in my reservation I was very surprised that not once during the evening was there any mention of my birthday by any of the staff.
Both of us order steak to be cooked medium one came back rare and the other came back well done it was very disappointing. And while the manager did offer to buy a dessert for The inconvenience I would have thought that they would have given me a small birthday dessert anyway.
We have been eating at the Butcher Shop whenever we have a special occasion for the past thirty years. We have never been disappointed until this past weekend. When we made our reservation for three we indicated there was a birthday in our party. The restaurant was no more or less crowded than we'd ever seen it over the years. The waitress brought a basket of bread for the table and a salad for one member of our party. A few minutes later the waitress brought a soup to another member of our party. About five minutes later, she came by with the pepper mill for fresh ground pepper but by the time she arrived, the salad was finished and the soup was nearly finished as well. Two of our entrees were brought to the table. Rather than dressing the baked potato table-side, one of our entrees had a spoonful of sour cream and small amount of butter already dressing the potato on his plate. We waited for our third entree. And we waited. Several minutes later the maitre d' brought the third entree with butter, sour cream, and chives in a little metal cup. The waitress was busy bringing complimentary birthday cake to one of the two other parties at tables immediately adjacent to ours that was also celebrating a birthday that evening. Getting the waitress' attention to request more sour cream was impossible so we gave up and ate our meals before they got any colder. No refill of bread. No refill of our water or ice tea glasses. The waitress came around with a dessert tray but knowing the restaurant would most likely be bringing us a slice of cake for the birthday in our party, we declined any dessert. The birthday cake never materialized. The bill came. We are always generous tippers but we were hard-pressed to figure out what amount to leave as a tip....the cold food was okay but the service was terrible.
Maybe have more staff on hand. But the food and service was outstanding
1. Manager, host seemed to care less of visit....seem more irritated than welcoming
2. Server was overwhelmed and running in circles and slow
3. Ran out of mac& cheese
4. Steaks came out at all different temps, with exception of what was ordered
5. Food came out in stages
6. Parking is a bit of a mess too.
Nope, not coming back. Used to be one of our favorites, but now seems a shell of what it once was....strcuk me as a "before" resteraunt show contestant....
Rebecca is an excellent server. She knows what we want before we even speak! Has a friendly and charming nature.
Overall, I love Butcher Shop. The setting, value and service are excellent. The 'old fashioned' setting is really cool, not many restaurants like this left. The food is generally very good and price great compared to comparable restaurants. The only negative comments about our most recent visit are: 1) I ordered red snapper which I usually like and order whenever it is offered. I didn't think to ask if it was filets or a whole fish - I like the whole fish. It came as filets and though it did not taste bad or 'fishy', it really didn't have any taste whatever. I have a rule not to order fish in a steakhouse, and should have followed the rule, and also should have asked if it would be the whole fish, so 'my bad'. 2) We paid extra for a baked potato (though only $3 since it was with a meal). The potato was very small and seemed very overdone. I didn't know that baked potatoes could be overdone but it was....3) Ordered mashed potatoes for the other meal and was brought vegetables. I decided it was ok and that I needed the veggies anyway, but my husband mentioned it to the server, and she went ahead and brought me a side of mashed potatoes.
Some of the issues may be because we ordered the sunset dinner specials. We had never had this before and weren't even aware of the special but happened to notice them on the menu and since we were there early went ahead and ordered - great deal and also one of the meals was what we were planning on ordering anyway...
We had a nice time. Great food. Spent around $200 for the two of us with tip. A pricey date but worth it.
Valentine’s Day dinner
First time at the Butcher Shop. Celebrated Valentine’s Day. Waited for about 10-15 min even though we had a reservation. First server wasn’t great but the person who relieved her was outstanding! Decor and ambience were phenomenal. Food was very good. Overall a very pleasant experience!
We had a great dinner but the music from the other room was a bit of a drag on the mood. We were hoping for a more quiet dinner on Valentines Day. But the food was great and our server was excellent.
The food and service was excellent. The decor was terribly outdated. The staff seems pretty unhappy. Maybe they were understaffed that day, since it was Valentine's. Overall though, I would go back.

We went for an early Valentine’s dinner on Feb 13th. It was very disappointing for a place we had been to many times and usually loved. Our reservation was at 5:30. We were seated immediately but no one came to our table for at least 15 minutes. The crowd was light at the time. I ordered a dry and dirty vodka martini.... it came with no olive juice in the drink and two olives on the side! Really? Our salad was served before we had a chance to enjoy our pre dinner cocktails. (Probably our fault - we should have waited to prder food) Being a special occasion, I ordered the king crab legs. For $42, I was disappointed in the quality of the legs. Only one leg (out of a pound) had a meaty solid piece of crab. It was evident they were previous frozen and a bit undercooked. (The king crab legs I get at the Outback are 10 times better!) The baked potatoes on both our plates were so mushy it was hard to eat. Either reheated or over cooked. My husband had prime rib and that was okay. Maybe we got the tail end of the food they reheat for their Sunset specials... not sure. But for the price we paid - I wasn’t happy. It spoiled what should have been a romantic evening.
Everything was impeccable, except the chocolate lava cake came out cold 3 times. But it was still a great time and the service was choice.
Excellent meal as always. Never disappointed, attentive service. My favorite place for steak.
It was your run of the mill steak. I had the New York steak and honestly felt I could have gone to Outback and had the same exact thing for half the price.
We requested the fireside room, and were immediately given a table in that room upon our arrival. The server was very busy, but we did not feel neglected at all. As usual, beverages and food were good (we go here fairly often), and we ended our meal feeling nice and relaxed.
Outstanding as usual. Steaks cooked perfectly. Service excellent.
Everything was great, but the steaks were slightly overcooked and the quality of the meat should have been better. The price point on the filets was too high for a mediocre cut. Overall I feel I payed top dollar but did not get a top dollar steak. Service was great and atmosphere was definitely steakhouse.
Went for a birthday. The birthday person ordered the $49 rib eye. The steak came out so overdone, beyond well done it was mindboggling. Of course it was ordered medium. So the steak was returned to the kitchen, waiter guaranteed it would take 4 minutes. Well took so long, the rest of us had eaten and our plates were cleared away before the birthday persons steak came back. No compensation was given, no offer of free dessert. And worst of all, no reference to the birthday. It was our go to steak house, but no longer. Will never return. Sorry, all you had to do was offer something for the screw up. The only thing we received was a full price bill.
Late review, but came here during restaurant week. Definitely a great deal with the pre-fixe menu. Really loud and busy during dinner at 6pm. There’s a large crowd waiting to be seated. Our server was very friendly and prompt service.

Steak was flavorfull, the ambiance was wonderful. I would definitely come back again!
Even though we made a reservation, we still had to wait about half an hour to be seated. The food was really good, but my steak was over cooked. We were sitting right by the bar, and another customer was really loud and belligerent. He kept making high pitched noises. It was disturbing to listen to while we were trying to eat.
My wife and I started off with a Caeser and a Spinach salad. For dinner we both had the 10 oz Prime Rib with baked potatoes. The Prime Ribs were very tender and prepared the way we like them. We split a Crème Brûlée which was different but very good. We weren't rushed and the service was excellent.
Went here for restaurant week. It took about 45 min to get our food. When it did finally come it wasn’t even hot. It wasn’t cold either it was just like room temperature. All the dishes we had were not hot. I mean if you order a medium well piece of meat shouldn’t it come out hot or at minimum warm??? I had the sea bass with scallops and it was very boring only 2 scallops and the sea bass was fishy in some parts. Not impressed. Will probably not be back

Our server paid more attentive to his other tables and we felt awkward. Pepper usually gets offered for the salad and he never offered it to our table. We observed that our drinks took longer than other tables near us that ordered after us and we had to flag down other staff for assistance throughout the meal.
The fish was good, but pass on the lava cake. It was cold and solid
