The Butcher Shop is full of old-world charm, with a somewhat dated decor. We dined there on a fairly slow night, so it was quiet, which was very nice and easy to have a conversation. Service is always very good, and this time was no exception.
My one observation, which isn’t truly a complaint, is that I ordered halibut. It was the only fish on the menu other than salmon. What came out was swordfish. It was good, I like swordfish, but the menu said halibut, so that was what I was expecting.
Otherwise, the other three family members with me really enjoyed their meals, and the evening was delightful.
Not their best night, lots of diners, waited for reserved table because of prior guests seated in booth. Food excellent, service very good, I'm spoiled and so expect excellent service. They did a great recovery and still got me out in time for the theater. No real complaints. always love their beef! Cooked exactly right every time.
Lovely evening just wish they could do something with the seating it’s always like you’re right on top of each other
Meat quality is very poor for a steakhouse. Very disappointed!
Love the black and red booths of traditional steak houses and the lighting is soft, pleasing but still enough to read the menu. We had a quiet spot until they put a noisy group right next to us when there were other places they could have put them away from a table of 3. Fish and Prime rib, delicious, but veggies bland, boreing, no seasoning. Garlic toast tough and lacked freshness. Cheese cake lacked flavor. Presentation seemed uninspired. Been coming here for years but remember it was better.
So disappointed that I got no points for this reservation.
My wife chose the salad and didn't care for the dressing. I had the onion soup which I thought was very good. The noise level, unfortunately, was too high where we were sitting. I had to lean over to talk with my wife in a loud voice. My wife enjoyed her steak and the halibut that I had needed extra "tropical" sauce but I thought that it was OK. We will come back again at a later date.
Really nice birthday celebration with great food and service. Many thanks.
Thank you very much for allowing us to serve you- Happy Birthday once again!
I love prime rib in this restaurant served a delicious juicy big slab of it
Our server did a very good job of assisting/supporting our (three-person birthday) party of eight. The food was tasty and portions were large—lots of leftovers for lunch the next day.
Went during restaurant week. Loved the special menu. Delicious food!!!
It was a very busy night and all my food was cold. I had Prime Rib with a baked potatoe. I honestly believe the waitress may have taken a well deserved break and our food set awhile. They were very very busy due to outside activities the night we were there. I look forward to going back on a normal night and trying again. They have a great menu.
It was very nice. Food was great.
The ambiance was great, but the food and service could have been better. We were seated almost right away, however, it took about 20 minutes to get our dinner and drink orders in. We wanted to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt since it was restaurant week, but we couldn't get past the wait times from start to finish. we also noticed that the food was not completely fresh when it came out. The lobster tasted as if it had been sitting out for a while, and the creme brulee did not have the signature crunch on the top layer. Sad to say: we were disappointed.
The meat was too lean and lacked the flavor. Asked for medium rare but was closer to medium.
My friend and I came for restaurant week. Coming here is always a treat. We both had the sirloin steak with the bleu cheese on top. It was so delicious! In fact, everything was so tasty!!
The steakhouse of my East Coast childhood. Careful service. Perfectly cooled steaks. Traditional sides, a solid Caeser salad and Indulgent desserts.
It was my first time here (during restaurant week) and I loved the old world charm of the dining room. Our server was wonderful and kept checking back with us and the portions were large! Will be back!
We went here during Restaurant Week and decided to choose one of their 3 course options. The french onion soup and dessert were very good, but the main course of prime rib was pretty mediocre. If I go back I will go for a steak.
Another great meal at the Butcher Shop. Our waitress was excellent.....answered questions about the menu, timing of delivery of courses was great. Food was delicious and plenty to take home. A very pleasant evening.
went for my husbands birthday. I had the medallions of with blue cheese and a wonderful sauce. was cooked perfect and very tender. we enjoyed our evening very much.
My son LOVED that stuffed burger! Prime Rib, Petite Filet and New York all so yummy! Service staff were great!
Haven’t been there in awhile but it was the best ever.
We had a great meal that included French onion soup and the filet. Both were fantastic as were the martinis and wine.
Great atmosphere reminding me of a more elegant time. Good, service and Ambiance were wonderful.
Great vib inside. Definitely reminds you of an old time steak house. That being said, stick with meat and not seafood. We tried the calamari and it’s was like rubber. Probably the worst we have had. That could be overlooked because the steak was great.
Had a great dinner. Lots of menu choices. Great service.
The Butcher Shop is a classic. It's a very pleasant journey to another time. The food is great and reasonably priced. The bar and wine selection are well stocked. It's a great date place with your wife or important other.
Booked last minute reservations for wife’s birthday. Excellent decision. The staff and food was outstanding.
Good food, good service and comfortable seating make for a good lunchtime get together.
The Butcher Shop has always been our family go-to for any special occasion celebration, but in recent visits it's seemingly declining in quality while increasing in price. The wine list isn't very broad for a pricey steakhouse, and the food is lackluster at best. Our fried calamari was chewy and not very golden brown (almost undercooked as far as the breading). My husband's steak was overdone (he asked for "very, very, very rare") and my lamb chops were so small that each bone had only one small bite. It's one of the pricier menu items and I was still hungry after eating all of it. The air conditioning vent above our table was blowing so hard, it not only made every object on the table and everyone seated there cold, it made our food cold almost as soon as it arrived. We asked for it to be turned down or re-directed a few times, and only after we were almost done with dinner was it finally just shut off because they couldn't figure it out. All in all, not a good experience for our daughter's 30th birthday dinner. Maybe the impending new ownership will mean improvements? Hopefully that's not the reason for the current disappointing decline in quality.
Steaks were very flavorful. My husband's steak was a little over cooked. They took it back and got him a fresh steak right away. They waited while he cut into the steak to make sure it was done to his satisfaction. Had a very nice experience. Two of us had the filet and loved the bernaise sauce. One had the prime rib and it was delicious. The other had the top sirloin and it was very good. Service was very good.
The new owners have cut a lot of corners. I used to really like to go here, but now it’s over priced and the food is underwhelming. The biggest issues was the dessert. The berries in cream used to be awesome. Three different berries with a thick Grand Mariner cream. I would go here just for the berries and cream. Now, the desert was just strawberries and a runny milky sauce that was lazy and boozy. I will not go back, there are better steaks in town that are better tasting for the same price or less. At least the other places care about providing a quality meal without sacrificing their culinary integrity. I spoke to the staff, I was not the first customer to complain about the issues. So, that makes me think the owner does not care. They just want to make a buck.
As usual our dinning experience was excellent. My steak was cooked to perfection. My husbands rib eye was just how he enjoys it. We have never been disappointed at the Butcher Shop. Now, I was surprised to see an ownership change notice on the door. Please, whomever the new owners are, don’t change the food, menu, staff, or ambiance of the Butcher Shop! There isn’t a better steak or price anywhere in San Diego!
My son’s hamburger bun was stale and the flavor of the meat was poor quality.
My “special” top sirloin dinner was fine. Spumoni was the best part.
Son’s GF’s filet and mashed potatoes were good but not as much as last time.
Looks like ownership changed or is changing?
The Butcher Shop has a great ambience, along with fine service, outstanding food, and very reasonable prices. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fine dining experience.
Great drinks in the bar to begin. Seated promptly at time of reservation. Winnie provided outstanding service and the food was top notch, as can always be expected at the Butcher Shop!
Old world charm meets top quality foods! The food was a perfect compliment to the extravagant ambiance. You feel like you are on the set of a 50's movie. But that's just a small part of the generous portions from a thoughtful menu. The appetizer assortment tray is a must to get a sense of the high level of care they put into every dish. The prime rib and the braised short ribs are top quality. Most of all I appreciated the attentive staff, especially the Senior Manager Mike you was very present during the entire night! Mike gives the best service and his staff cannot help but to follow his great example. Thanks Mike (sorry I don't remember your last name).
