I had a really bad experience do to the wind. The restaurant is not well prepared to receive clients. I was not able to eat do to the cold weather. They at least need more heaters. The stuff members did everything possible on their hands to help us! Very nice people! The mashed potato tasted horrible not what I was expecting. The prime rib was fair.
I love this restaurant and they did an excellent job safely seating down to the incredible service and the best piece of prime rib ever.
Prime rib was outstanding as usual. Burger was disappointing - overcooked dry patty, came naked and needed basic condiments (ketchup, mustard, Mayo), basic bun, and no pickle as was promised on the menu. Fries and onion soup were good although the soup was served lukewarm. Service was good overall except the server, Claudia, kinda forgot about us after the food came - I never got that hot sauce I asked for but we did eventually got more water with the check. Also, why ask if it’s a special occasion if nothing comes of it? No happy birthday? Outside dining during Covid was honestly quite comfortable - just make sure to dress according to the weather. To be clear, I would absolutely dine here again, but only if it was for the prime rib.
We love the Butcher Shop but this experience wasn't the best. We had a reservation but had to wait for almost 30 minutes to be seated. When we were seated, we weren't provided any service for 15 minutes, they didn't seem to have enough staff. When we finally ordered, we found out they were out of prime rib, the reason we'd chosen to go there as our last indoor dining option before San Diego went back into the purple tier. So, it was a bit of a bummer.
Outstanding food, outstanding service, outstanding experience! We absolutely loved our dinner. We had the crab cakes for appetizers, French onion soup (perfect), Prime Rib and Cajun Brisket. Yum, yum, yum!
We also try to patronize local businesses and eat “outside the box” this one was so amazing! Thank you Butcher Shop for helping us celebrate our wedding anniversary.
The meal was very enjoyable. Atmosphere was plush and comfortable. We will go back
Great old school steakhouse with friendly service. The Prime Rib is really as tasty as everyone says. The ribeye was also delicious. Love the red booths and ambiance. We will definitely be back to this place.
Don’t tell them it’s your birthday they will serve you a piece of cheesecake that you didn’t order and charge you for it. We can’t even eat cheesecake so it was waisted.
Great meal. Steak was cooked to perfection. Just wish that pandemic was over so that you can relax and enjoy the great food.
I don’t mind price increases, but I do mind bad food. They couldn’t cut the steak any thinner. Vegetables, just soggy zucchini. Tuft meat, ate couple of bites. Never again.
We were there for our 1st anniversary dinner the hostess she was rude and we choose to sit outside for social distancing but the freeway traffic made it hard to hold a conversation and our desert was sent to another table. The waitress was nice but her visits to check on us was far and few in between. My friends had raved about this place for years so we decided to check it out but we were disappointed for our first experience
in the 6 months I haven't treated myself out to a 'exclusive dinner' for myself, this was superb. I haven't been in "Butcher Shop" in couple years and I told myself when it was time for me to go out I wanted prime rib. This was one of "melt in my mouth" prime rib I've had in ages. Loved everything I had including the iced tea / spumoni. Had the Sunset Dinner menu.

we order the calamari as an appetizer honestly i expected more for the price, it was your typical frozen calamari just threw in the fryer flavorless, the wine was good, and the steak delicious, but i would not go there again, the room that we got sit at smells very bad.
We had a spur of the moment get together with some friends and had an excellent meal. The service and the food was excellent as usual. Even with the COVID restrictions we had a great time. Thanks again to the staff at the Butcher Shop Steak House.
This place is tried and true. The Potato skin appetizer was yummy. Top sirloin steak was delicious with veggies. House wine is good at a great price. Even with the new regulations it was fun and relaxing.
What a gem. They offer indoor dining and have excellent service. They take proper Covid-19 protocol EXCEPT taking temperatures of customers. They take in a lot of money no doubt with their pricy menu, they REALLY should have 3-4 scanning thermometers to ensure 100% safety measures. OVERALL, I had an incredible time. The for is amazing and the waiters/waitresses/hosts/hostesses excel at their jobs. 4.5/5
Their ambiance is dated for sure circa 1980’s. If this doesn’t bother you, it’s a great place. For me however, I thought a little restoration could be used.
We dined outside which gave us a bit more entertainment than dining outside, watching the traffic both vehicle and pedestrian go by. Food was excellent as it always is.
They have a diminished menu due to Covid, so some items you're looking for may not be there. My garlic mashed potatoes weren't great, but the beef was up bvb to their usual standards and they're trying their best with a reduced wait staff.
3 couples. Great steaks. The Prime Rib not so much. Service here is outstanding!
I have enjoyed meals on other occasions. This time the food had no flvor as it was supposed to be cajun brisket as dissappointing to say the least.
Service slow but ok cuz covid
Food was great accept the side of scampi. You only get 3 as a side, it also taste like the sauce was slightly burned. However, the server was EXTREMELY attentive to our table without being intrusive (as my husband and I were having a disagreement). I will say, fiber dinning outside is such a bumber, especially because the steak house ambiance was non existent. Think I'll stick to $$ restaurants for outside dinning until this Covid blows over. 5 stars for my server. Really wish I could remember her name. One more thing, they seated us promptly (reserved tabled through open table) and every pre request was met without fail. Bravo, Butcher Shop. We will be back under better circumstances.
Good vale and the service was good . The steaks are good size.
The service was fair, my appetizer and salad was very bad, I had prime rib bits in a sauce, the meat was well-done and the sauce tasted like it had been around a while. I’m sure they Microwaved it. The lettuce for the salad was very stale and my fillet was OK. The best part of the evening was my bartender r who help me much more than my waitress. That brought it up a star.
We have enjoyed the Butcher Shop for many years and understand the difficulties during the current situation. The attendants were very cordial as always however service, especially with a limited number of patrons was slow. Bringing menu, ordering and receiving drinks were good. However, there was an extended time to place our meal order and a good 45 minutes to receive dinner after ordering. One meal, a meatloaf, was actually hard which is rather difficult to do.
Despite sitting in the parking lot and listening to the freeway nearby, the dinner was good. One poor waitress had the responsibility of taking care of all the tables alone. Which made wait times longer than usual but she handled it well. Can’t wait to go back when I can dine inside and enjoy the ambiance.
I have loved this place for many years! I've missed it during our shut downs and was thrilled to see it had some outdoor dining as of late. The covid responsible setting is not the best but the food, drinks and staff still are- Bravo for giving it a try in these conditions, I'll still be back
The seating occupied the valet space in front of the restaurant. With a view of the freeway, and noisy street adjacent, the sun in the west shining unmercifully on us, and the barrage from a variety of insects, it was not a pleasant experience. There was only one person serving all the tables.
Definitely avoid this experience! The food was so-so but not up to par. My shrimp were rubbery. The restaurant must be losing money on this poorly designed al fresco disaster. Better to rethink the whole thing-provide a better location for outside dinning and staff accordingly. We like this restaurant, but not this pale shadow of a place. where you can relax, enjoy company and and a libation for a relaxing time. We normally spend a few hours, but were glad to leave after 45 minutes.
Outdoor dining is actually very nice and relaxing. Perfect warm evenings in San Diego make this a nice place to relax and have dinner. The Butchershop has done a wonderful job decorating the patio area with beautiful fresh flowers and the sunsets are nice to watch. The food is amazing with new items on the menu all the time. I recommend this place to anyone who loves a great steak dinner.
First the bad...Ordered the prime rib. I could tell that the prime rib was made the day before, because it was super dry and the fat on it looked congealed. We also ordered the beef Wellington rare, it came well done. The good, tomato bisque soup and salad was good. Seating is outside due to Covid.
One of the best steakhouses I’ve ever been to. Since it’s covid we had to sit outside which overlooks the highway. Bad ambiance but the food made up for it.

Outdoor dining in the awning area where Valet used to be. Dining in the time of COVID. We were so happy to come back to one of our favorite restaurants. Not all of the tables were fully shaded, but the trees helped shade the sun. Freeway noise was loud, but we could still hear our conversation. Food was fantastic. My Filet Mignon was cooked perfect and tender. Husband had the salmon on the sunset special and really enjoyed it. It was cooked perfect and well seasoned. Service was cheerful despite challenges. We enjoyed the night out.
Outstanding service and food! An old school New York speakeasy vibe with excellent menu choices and superb quality! A gem in the Kearny Mesa area for an upper scale lunch/dinner at very fair prices.
I ate at the Butcher Shop twice in the past 2 weeks and had very different experiences. The first time was the Saturday before Father's Day. All available tables were occupied but they were well spaced out and it seemed like the restaurant was following all safety precautions. I had prime rib and it was excellent. The service was very slow, but I enjoyed having the time to visit with my son and daughter-in-law. I was very pleased with my meal and went back on a Thursday 11 days later. When I arrived around 5:15 there was only one other car in the parking lot and, although I had a reservation, I thought it might be closed. It was open, but only two or three other tables in the room were occupied and there were no diners in the other rooms. I ordered the prime rib again and was very disappointed. It was fried on one side and quite tough. I assumed they had not made it fresh that day and needed to heat it up. I later realized that it is probably difficult to offer prime rib when there are so few diners, which is probably why other steak houses are not offering it at all. I've been going to the Butcher Shop since 1970 and unfortunately my most recent experience is probably what I will have to expect while restaurants are operating under Coronavirus restrictions and are nowhere near capacity. I go for the prime rib since I can make steaks at home, so I probably won't go back until the experience is more like what I have come to expect. At this time I can not recommend this restaurant to a friend who wants prime, but I assume the steaks are probably fine.
