Butcher & Bull is an approachable take on the classic steak house, with the atmosphere and decor of an upscale eatery without all of the pomp and circumstance. In the heart of downtown Winston-Salem adjacent to both the Benton convention center and the Millennium center, Butcher & Bull is conveniently located for either a quick drink at the bar or a dining experience to remember by executive chef Timothy Gallione.

The restaurant was at the Marriott. One phone number on Google was disconnected. The other went to the front desk of the hotel. This was very confusing as I was trying to adjust my reservation. Food was good, but very overpriced. I’m not sure if they recently moved into this location, but the ambience was much worse than you would expect for the price.

The service was wonderful! The highlight of the evening. Destin was our server and I have no complaints. The food however, left much to be desired. My steak was half well and half medium. The stuffed mushroom had way too many tomatoes and tasted slightly burnt. The risotto was not creamy, but sticky and pasty. The manager for the evening came over and asked how was our meal after we communicated our dislikes to Destin. Once explained, she apologized and asked if I would like to try anything else. I chose the asparagus. To my dismay, the asparagus came and it was also disappointing. Really greasy with way too much garlic, really thin and there was one single broccolini. Not sure if that was a surprise. I doubt it. I was comped for the stuffed mushroom and the asparagus. My friend ordered the Wagyu sliders and fries. She thought maybe the sliders sat under a heat lamp and the fries came out room temperature. My first experience was absolutely wonderful, one of the reasons I decided to come back. If I do now, it will be to say hi to Destin.

I didn't realize when booking this that it's a restaurant in the Mariott hotel. The food is okay, it's serviceable, but it's not worth the price by any means. The ribeye was cooked properly but it was a fairly tough piece of beef. The burger wasn't anything special to make it worth $17, especially with Small Batch one block over. The parm fries are shoestring fries with Kraft style parm from the green cap bottle. None of this was bad by any means, but it's not worth the price. The ambience is pretty much what you'd expect from a restaurant attached to a hotel. It's pretty unimaginative decor but the place is honestly fastidiously clean. Our server was very good but also very overworked. We think he was working the entire (fairly busy) dining room by himeself that evening. I'm sure it's tough to get good help and he was doing the best he could but it took awhile to get refills and such. There's better places in downtown Winston, especially if you're willing to drop what B&B charges.

We went to the Easter Brunch Buffet. It was OUTSTANDING! The food was incredible- temperature was perfect, tons of choices, all of it fresh, some cut and prepared in front of our eyes. Our server was Vinton and he could not have been better. He even waited until we didn’t have food in our mouths to ask questions. The servers acted as a team and we never wanted for anything; they all were bringing things to us to make sure we were happy. The Chef was circling checking on guests, as was the Manager. Everyone had smiles on their faces and it looked like everyone in the restaurant was making multiple trips to the buffet, so I think our satisfaction was mutually shared among the crowd. I’m already dropping hints for my kids to bring me here for the Mother’s Day Brunch. I figure it’s best to start planting the seed early. If you’re reading this, maybe I’ll see you there :)
