Buca di Beppo - Downtown Indianapolis Ratings and Reviews
The atmosphere was great! The service was outstanding. We ordered the calamari (appetizer) which we received in less than FIVE minutes! Then our chicken Marsala arrived less than 10 minutes after our appetizer!!! Great place to split a meal for two. Ideal for double dates!
Not sure what was going on New Year's Eve, but the service was extremely slow and the server we had seemed to be very interested in getting on with his evening. After ordering 30 minutes went by and the server had never brought bread AND came to the table to let me know that they were out of the Mozzarella Sticks. It is bad enough to run out of this item at 8PM on a Holiday, BUT and a big BUT.....we should have been informed right away as opposed to 30 minutes later. We were seated in a booth in the bar and the bar staff and waiters were all standing behind the bar just hanging out. It looked really bad and no one seemed to care. It just wasn't a good experience for us.
When we first got there, a large group of people were near our table. They all had been drinking heavily and were quite loud. Luckily we were't seated too close to them. A woman who was got hit repeatedly by a drunk man trying to take off and put on his coat numerous times. My husband and I joked we could tell when their food came because for once they were at a reasonable noise level. Otherwise they were yelling, whistling quite loudly, and generally loud.
Once they finally left, our dinner carried on with not much more hiccup. My husbands two beers that were on tap seemed to take a bit longer than usual to make it back to the table, but I'm sure our waitress was busy.
The food overall was ok. The appetizer we got was barely above warm when we got it. Our food was a little bit warmer, but didn't seem to have been fresh out of the kitchen, more like sat around for 10-15 minutes than was delivered.
Overall I'd say it's more for large groups that are willing to wait a bit longer for their drinks and food, and are ok with their meals being semi-warm. For the prices, I'm not sure if I'd revisit again, just for the instances above.
This place was more than I expected. I thought it was a high end Italian eatery. It was WAY better than that. It is one of those local gems. VERY comfortable. I loved feeling like we were walking through the kitchen. They gave me a $15.00 coupon AFTER we made the reservation. Will go back.
Out of two many things including pizza and Italian dressing! Cake that I paid $12.95 per slice for was just ok and not like it used to be at the Greenwood location. Just so so....sent the eggplant parmesan back as I did not like the way it appeared to be cooked on the edges. The best part was the bread and butter!
We came in for Christmas Day lunch. We normally enjoy coming to the south side location but they were fully booked so visited the downtown location. Service was good but the quality and temperature of food was lacking. The one standout was the fried Brussels sprouts-they were wonderful! Tasted great!! The sausages ans peppers were served in sauce that was cold-not just lukewarm, but cold. The sausages as well were barely warm. We also ordered the chicken rigatoni, and specifically said we did not want the spicy version-there was an option on the menu. Needless to say, our entree was too spicy to enjoy. Sadly, it too, was served warm, not hot. Finally, our lemon creek cake, a special treat for Christmas, barely had any raspberry sauce. We have always enjoyed the Greenwood location, but the quality of the downtown location was lacking. Seems they were rushed and paid no attention to quality- just get people in and out the door. Very disappointed.
Great service and terrific food. We had a party of 8. Arrived early but they seated us promptly. We ordered way too much food, but it was fun to try a variety of dishes. Pizza, Chicken Parm, Chicken Saltimbocca, Calamari, Fried Mozzarella - it was all delicious!
I have eaten at this location once before as a walk-in and the food and service was good. On this occasion I had made a reservation for 8:15 for two. We were seated at approximately 8:55 pm at a table that was not ready for us. There were several other open tables in the restaurant. It appeared management was not managing the work-flow properly. After being seated we waited another 10 minutes until we were welcomed by the waiter. At this point I ordered drinks, appetizer, salad and entrée as to save time. I was glad I ordered a tea and water because it took awhile for the tea to be refilled. When the entrée arrived the server that brought it set it on the far end of the table where we had to reach and touch the hot plate to get the food. I then noticed they never brought us bread. The manager did apologize and comped the salad and appetizer.
It was a weekend before Christmas, so we expected it to be busy, but they packed the tables of 10 so close together, you couldn't even leave your seat once you got in. And the noise level made any conversation challenging. They had told us when we made the reservation that we could have a round table, but then sat us at a rectangle, saying nothing is guaranteed. The chicken parmesan was a very flat piece of meat, like a hammered patty, and had thick cold breading on it. It wasn't at all like what we've had at Buca before. The bar service was very slow, so when we stayed after dinner to finish our drinks, they were trying to move us along.
We've had great times at Buca in the past, but this one fell very short.
Arrived with 4 friends and we were immediately seated per our reservation. That's the only thing that went right.
Took 20+ minutes for first round of drinks to show up. To add insult to injury, all of the draft beer was flat. So, we ask for bottled beer to replace our flat drafts (another 15 minutes lost) and no apology. 30 minutes into our experience the apps finally arrive, which by the way we ordered upon being seated.
Next our waitress told us they were out of silverware and handed us plastic "to go" cutlery. Really! A few minutes later we noticed new customers arriving and being handed silverware, so.... We asked to replace our plastic and were met with a not so warm response from the waitress. When she finally returned with the silverware, she basically dropped it on the table, grunted and walked off.
As for food... I'd give it a C. Nothing amazing and certainly not worth all the trouble of waiting so long for each item ordered and receiving poor service at that.
My personal recommendation, avoid this restaurant.
Reservation experience was amazing. They sat us fairly quick. Service was terrible. She had 3 out of 4 of her tables were full the whole time but she couldnt keep up with our drinks. Told her we were ready to order, she said "im not". Our lasagna was good. Got apperizers before our basket of bread. My daughters pizza tasted fishy and it was suppose to be half and half but it wasnt. Servers general attitude was bad. It was our guests first experience and I wasn't very happy about it.
We had reservations for 7 and was taken to our table which wasn't clean at 730. I helped the hostess clean the table then our waiter was at a slow start with our food but it wasn't his fault he was covered up with tables he was waiting on. He brought us dessert to try and make up for it and he and the hostess kept apologizing for the situation. We were packed in like sardines they had to many tables in the room.
It was by far our best meal during our annual visit to the city! We sat at the Pope’s Table and had a big group. It was so much fun! And we were celebrating someone’s birthday even though it was also a business meal! They did a great job taking care of us and we had a fabulous time! They never let us down!
This was one of the worst experiences ever. We were seated 50 minutes after our reservation. The manager blamed it on the fact that we booked through open table. The restaurant was extremely dirty and the staff was very rude. After being seated for 10 minutes without anyone coming to our table to take drink orders, we got up and left. We will not be going there again and will not recommend.
Our reservations were at 6:30 we finally got seated at 7:20!! Instead of overbooking maybe you should try some other route!! Totally unexceptionable! I would understand a few minutes but that many was ridiculous! Then we get seated order and half our order came out 20 minutes after the other people at our table had got theres! And then one dish was totally NOT ordered and we NEVER got it!!! It will be awhile if we ever come back! Sad because we love Buca!
Yes at 6:30 on Black Friday with football and tree lighting, it is crazy here but the staff worked very hard to keep things moving. People were rather obnoxious to staff but staff handled it extremely well. Our reservation was sniped by a pushy family but we were taking care of quickly there after.
Every year we eat at Buca's prior to the lighting of the Indianapolis Christmas "tree". We have never had to wait this long, 20 minutes maximum most of the time. The lighting was to take place at 7:50pm, we made 6:15pm reservations for 5...MORE than enough time. We were not seated until 7:10pm! Then we waited for a waiter way too long for just water and then waited and waited for wine and finally after changing our food order from what we wanted to eat we chose pasta dishes which could be prepared quickly so we had enough time to eat. That was disappointing. At 7:40pm, still no food, so we spoke with the manager and they agreed to allow us to pay for our meal and then leave for the lighting and return to be seated promptly afterward. We were seated promptly, the service by Henry was very good and the pasta dishes were fine. We ordered additional wine after we returned and paid for it afterwards. This is a HUGE event in Indianapolis every year, but this restaurant was not prepared with enough employees, we saw table after table not cleared of dishes and lines of people still waiting. We would hate to stop coming here for our traditional dinner prior to the lighting. We do love Open Table options!
It was an especially busy night for downtown Indianapolis but not one that was unexpected or unusual, however, we were a table of 5 with 3 kids, 2 of which received their meal 15 minutes after the adults. So, kids shared adult's meals and kids meals were boxed and taken home, likely to be wasted. (Kids meals were free due to issues.). Another very large group (20+) were leaving due waiting over an hour beyond their reservation time and not being seated. Lots of mistakes adding up this evening. Wait staff and everyone else I saw was working hard. This one was blown by management keeping the ship in good running order.
