About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for business meals
  • Good for groups
Step into Brutto Americano, a hidden gem within The Barnett in the lively heart of downtown New Orleans. Chef Brian Burns reimagines Italian classics with a fresh, contemporary twist, highlighting handmade pasta and the finest local seafood. The wine list draws heavily from the Italian peninsula and offers a curated selection of small growers from the American West Coast. The cocktail menu channels the elegance of Milan and Rome’s legendary bars, blending tradition with innovation.
The name Brutto Americano, which translates to "Ugly American," is an irreverent nod to both the lavishness of the restaurant’s stunning physical space and the kitchen’s bold, unapologetic approach to reimagining classic Italian dishes. At Brutto, the team pushes boundaries while staying rooted in tradition, creating an experience that’s as unexpected as it is unforgettable.

If you’re looking for an exceptional dining experience in New Orleans, Brutto Americano is an absolute must-visit. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a warm, inviting atmosphere that perfectly balances casual comfort with modern sophistication. It is attached to The Barnett Hotel yet does not feel like a standard hotel restaurant. It’s a vibe. The first thing I would like to highlight is the service, which was impeccable. Our server, Israel, was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about ensuring we had an outstanding experience. He was happy to recommend dishes and drinks tailored to our preferences, which made the evening even more enjoyable. Israel checked on us frequently, but we did not feel rushed. We brought our 3-year-old to dinner. Israel treated him wonderfully… bringing him off menu juice, asking about his dining experience and making menu suggestions that were well suited for a toddler. We dine out frequently, and I can honestly say he was one of the best servers we’ve ever had. The menu at Brutto Americano is a brilliant fusion of classic Italian flavors with a fresh, contemporary twist. Every dish we tried was well-balanced and crafted with meticulous attention to detail. The quality of ingredients shines through, especially the Salsa Verde’ on the steak we enjoyed. Another standout was their meatballs and Radiatori pasta, which I had gotten during a previous visit, and it was just as yummy as I remember. The cocktail selection deserves a special mention as well. Their cocktail menu was unique, and all the items were appealing. I ordered the Velvet & Vine (recommended by Israel) and my husband got an Old Fashioned. Whether you’re a local or just visiting New Orleans, Brutto Americano offers a fantastic blend of taste, ambiance, and hospitality.

Thoroughly enjoyed the new Brutto Americano after visiting its predecessor Josephine Estelle many times through the years! All our food was excellent - the meatballs, two pastas (especially the crab & jalapeno pasta) and the burger and mushrooms we shared. Excellent wine list and the staff was extremely attentive. Include this on your "go to" list in NOLA!

This was our first time eating at this restaurant, and we will be back soon. We invited another couple to join us, and they also enjoyed the meal. We shared starters and pasta dishes. It was perfect to do, so we had an opportunity to taste a few different things. There is an option for the chef to feed you, but some in my group weren't interested. That is something I will try next time.
