Located inside of what was once a Chinese schoolhouse, Brasserie l'Ecole in Victoria, British Columbia now serves high-end French cuisine in a casual setting. The name is actually a nod to this building's former occupation (l'Ecole means 'the school' in French) and the unpretentious atmosphere (a Brasserie is laidback eatery that serves comfort food).

Chef leans heavily on our local farmers, using seasonal ingredients to create a menu that is a callback to the kind of food that was once common along the French countryside. While it changes regularly, Brasserie l'Ecole never strays too far from its classics: steaks, burgers, onion soup and frites. The wine is French, the food is French leaning and the staff are fantastic.

We had an unforgettable dinner at Brasserie L’Ecole to celebrate my wife’s birthday, and every detail exceeded our expectations. From the moment we walked in, the hospitality and professionalism stood out. Virgil, our server, was absolutely outstanding — attentive, warm, and incredibly knowledgeable. He provided top-tier service that made the evening feel truly special. A huge thank you as well to Vinnie, who went above and beyond to help us secure the perfect reservation time. His kindness and professionalism set the tone for a wonderful night. The food was phenomenal. We began with the chicken liver mousse, which was velvety, rich, and perfectly complemented by a punch of grainy mustard. For mains, we enjoyed the signature burger — perfectly cooked and full of flavor — and the gnocchi, which was light, delicate, and beautifully balanced. Dessert was a decadent caramel creation that ended the meal on a high note. Our dishes were expertly paired with a glass of 2021 Montagny white wine, which brought everything together beautifully. A huge thank you to the team at Brasserie L’Ecole for making our evening so memorable. We’ll absolutely be back — and recommending it to everyone we know.

Amazing charming service and delicious food all around. The steaks and frites were perfectly done and the Aviation gin cocktail was one of the best I’ve ever had and my partner agreed. So nice to be able to reserve now, we will be back the next time we crave a great steak.

A small, intimate and romantic setting, albeit a bit noisy - but happy noise so no complaints there. Service was outstanding - which is regretfully not commonplace in many fine restaurants in Victoria. The food, from starters to dessert, was excellent. As pleasing to the eye as to the palate. Complementing the food was a comprehensive wine list with interesting options. The menu is not large, which is a positive in my book, but there are choices for every taste. We highly recommend this eating establishment, and predict that it will become a favourite haunt! Reservations are a must. Bon appetit!
