Outstanding restaurant in a city with many fine ones. Superb food, excellent wine list and very attentive service. All in very attractive surroundings with excellent street views. Quite remarkable.
A little overrated for the price. I expect food to be exquisite and creative at these prices. It was good but not exceptional.
Food was excellent, and the service was better. Was only in Montreal a short time and Bonaparte was one of our highlights
requested a romantic table a month in advance to celebrate 35th anniversary with my wife at 6:30 on a Saturday night. no problems with the reservation and we were seated at an acceptable table promptly upon arriving - although there were other tables that I felt would have been more romantic, we sat where we were directed.
reviewed the excellent wine list - many good Bordeaux options appropriately priced. less depth from the Rhone region and Italy and other new world / old world wine regions, but given the rich foods found on the menu and the fact that this is clearly a French restaurant, its not surprising to find a focus on the Bordeaux. we picked a 2011 Margaux and it was very smooth and full flavored.
Dinner menu included a Table d'hote, an a la carte menu and a tasting menu ( 6 small courses selected from groups of 3 or four options in each group )
we ordered from the a la carte menu - Mixed green salad, Lobster Bisque, Foie Gras Crème Brule and Medallions of Venison with Mushroom Ravioli.
Bisque was smooth and rich, very enjoyable. The Crème Brule Foie Gras was epic ! have never had such a dish, and we applaud the chef's creativity and the dish as well - it was delicious. our server recommended the Venison be ordered Medium Rare, so we took her advice and the dish arrived perfectly cooked. I recall a cognac sauce was included and this added flavor to the dish, but I felt for my own taste the dish needed more seasoning.
only complaint was that it took I bit too long to be presented with our bill and the opportunity to pay it and depart.
overall a good job by the kitchen and serving staff on the evening of our visit.
2nd visit. Had the tasting menu, it was amazing! The servers were very attentative. I asked for a window table which they obliged and even had sparklers on our desserts because we were celebrating an anniversary. Will definitely continue to go back.
We had a delicious dinner at this delightful restaurant. We were staying at the hotel and took the recommendations of other travelers and reserved a table for dinner. I had an incredible salmon in pastry with sage sauce and my husband had a delicious filet mignon with cognac peppercorn sauce. The cocktails were delicious as well. We shared a huge creme brûlée, which the server brought adorned with a sparkler since I had mentioned it was our anniversary. Service is impeccable and accommodating. Loved this place and will return next time we are in Old Montreal.
Excellent in all respects. Three course fixed price dinner great value! Many bargain wines. Charming waiter.
Tourist trap. The restaurant was filled with tourists. Apparently no regular patrons. Service was slow. We were a table of 4. Main course came out 10 min apart for each couple of guests. Mushroom raviolis had a great taste but were unfortunately dry and hard on the edges due to overheating in the salamander or under the heat lamp. Old-fashioned cuisine where everything (even lamb rack) was smothered in sauce. Steak tartare was ground too finely to ruin the great tartare texture and was only accompanied by French fries. Supposedly great Grand-Marnier soufflé was overpowered by alcohol. Too expensive for the quality (main course was around $50 a plate). Very disappointing. Will not go back.
Traditional French fare in a lovely setting with very good service. Three of us tried a range of dishes -- duck breast, Dover sole, peppered tenderloin -- and all were delicious. The chocolate chip souffle was to die for -- the lightest, fluffiest concoction we have ever tasted!
Overall excellent. Service was a little slow but we had a group of 20.
Had dinner with friends last Saturday night and with the large parties that they seated us near, could not hear a thing. Waitress worked very hard and was great.
the food was excellent and the service was even better. We had a wonderful evening.
Great experience with the tasting menu
Flew 2000 miles to have dinner here. Open Table rated as THE TOP place to eat in Montréal. WRONG! Service slow, non-attentive, ordered a simple French onion soup and what came out was nothing like French onion soup. Some variation, no melted cheese on top, all watered down, with a piece of stale toast in it. This is not French onion soup. Terrible. And when the bill came, one bowl of so called watered down French onion soup and the cheapest house table red wine was $40 USD. They also made you feel like they were doing you a favor to dine there. Where is steak and shake when you need one?
beautiful venue, we loved the atmosphere! We will definitely return, fantastic food!
We we're really disappointed in the lack of flavor is the food. It basically tasted like airline food. Service was excellent and ambiance was great.
Our 1st night in Montreal. A lovely menu, good variety, good wine list, great tasting food, good service, and reasonably priced.
It was ranked as the best in town. It is a traditional restaurante, with good service, good quality in its cuisine although a bit old fashioned and slightly deteriorated. Nevertheless I think it is an excellent choice while visiting Montreal
This was a perfect location in old Montreal offering good traditional French cuisine. We went there to celebrate Convocation (Graduation) and enjoyed the food, atmosphere, and service.
We had incredible service from Caroline throughout the evening. She made great recommendations for entrees and wine. If you are a steak lover we strongly recommend their Steak Rossini. It's the best we've ever had! The venison medallions were delicious. The chocolate chip soufflé was perfect in every way.
Bonaparte never disappoints!! Right from when we were shown to our table to the final course, it was (and is) a great dining experience!
Wow! What an amazing experience start to finish. The ambiance is classically romantic and inviting. The service we had was top notch with such attention to detail always refilling our wine when it got low. The real gem is the food! We said best meal we’ve ever eaten. The filet was the best I’d ever had! The French onion soup was light and not salty at all! We both walked away full and just blown away on how that experience and food was one we will not ever forget. Perfect for a romantic special occasion. We will be back next time we visit Montréal.
Right from the moment we walked in we felt welcomed and excited! The ambiance was romantic and elegant. Our server was very helpful and provided excellent suggestions regarding both the wine list and food options. The food presentation and flavors were on point. Definately recommend!
Great ambience. Super food. Done to perfection. Beautiful location in Old Montreal. Celebration of our wedding anniversary. Put sparklers on our dessert!! Can't wait to return.
Pour ma part tout a été parfait, de l'accueil jusqu'à notre départ.
Le service est impeccable, la nourriture délicieuse pour une facture très abordable.
On restaurant à recommender sans hésiter
I came here as a surprise dinner for my boyfriend while we were in town for vacation. It was an excellent experience from the moment we walked in to the time we left a few hours later. I had made reservations the week before requesting to be seated by the window (as another reviewer suggested), and they were able to grant that request. I was so happy I did! My boyfriend and I each ordered the tasting menu, which in my opinion, was well worth the price (and frankly underpriced). The rack of lamb, as well as the shrimp and scallops, were simply divine.
When we return next year we will certainly be coming back.
A lovely restaurant, white tablecloths, elegant ambiance. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. The escargot tartlette was yummy as was the rack of lamb...perfectly cooked with a delicious sauce reduction. My husband loved the squash soup and liked the Dover sole but felt it was a bit on the dry side. Desserts of a light and delicious chocolate mousse and a Creme Caramel topped off a special meal. Service was excellent. It is on the expensive side but a treat for a special evening.
Enjoyed this experience very much on our last night in Montreal. and our server was so engaging!
Excellent meal, attentive but unobtrusive staff. Handsome classic decor. Quiet.
Great service and value. Love being here in thw evening. A wonderful treat.
Chef Fort's creations were outstanding - we had the tasting menu. The service was impeccable - Sam took really good care of us. I will definitely return and also suggest to anyone visiting the Old Montreal area - well worth the trip!
Bonaparte was amazing - but what really made the experience was our FIRST RATE server! I am terrible and do not recall her name - she was an attractive brunette who waited on my friends and I there for a bachelorette dinner. Best service we had all weekend in Montreal! Great recommendations, prompt service, ease of accommodation for our gluten free diner, on and on. We had a fabulous time. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
My wife and I went over Memorial Day weekend to celebrate our anniversary. We both agreed it's one of the best dining experiences we've ever had. The restaurant is beautiful, the food was amazing and the service was outstanding. Would highly recommend to anyone who is visiting Old Montreal
What a wonderful experience at Bonaparte! I booked it for a birthday and it was fabulous! The servers are attentive and the service was impeccable! Our water was constantly being refilled without ever having to ask. We had a tasting menu which was fantastic! Although some plates were on the smaller side, we left feeling super full! The atmosphere is amazing, a quality, fine dining ambiance. Will be back for sure!
Merci! a first class experience, food, service, ambiance, pace!
Excellent, friendly service in this long established Montreal Restaurant where you are treated like a regular. Food is spot on.
Wonderful food, ambience and service. The onion soup had a deep, rich taste. It has a large piece of crostini with melted cheese rather than the usual smothering that masks the real taste. The mushroom ravioli appetizer had six pieces. Definitely enough for two people. The Dover Sole and red tuna entrees were delicious and presented beautifully.
We were visiting Montreal for a convention. This restaurant was recommended to us and did not disappoint. The ambience and service were excellent. We all enjoyed our healthy meals and the wine recommended by the waiter was perfect with the food
Amazing! The tasting menu paired with a Chateauneuf-du-Pape - Magnifique!!!
This was a pre-theatre meal and the service was quick but not pushy. Easy to have the meal in 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours.
The food was excellent but a couple of wines by the glass were not great.
One of our favourite restaurants.
