An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware.
Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture.
The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment.
All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

    The overall aesthetic of the restaurant hasn’t changed it’s beautiful from the moment you walk in with a beautiful bar and the grand staircase and the tiered dining area makes you feel like you’re going back in time. However, the menu has changed and it has not been updated on any of its websites or OpenTable they no longer serve the Wagyu burger or the filet mignon steak. They’ve changed it to a patty And do a skirt steak, which was delicious. However, you could tell for the price that they were trying to cut corners even the deviled eggs were smaller in size than I’ve had in the past when dining there the service was still great as well as the drinks. They just need to update the menu or lower the prices as it’s not a contender with a high-end menu as it has been in the past.

    We love coming to Bix.  I’m vegetarian and generally like the options. Yesterday‘s options were weak. I almost always start with the deviled eggs and they were great. The organic heirloom tomato cart served table side was wonderful. I had the eggplant as my entrée and it was good, but not spectacular. Our server was wonderful. She offered a homemade pasta with cherry tomatoes and fresh herbs. I make that at home so, no. My husband had the pork chop and when he could get meat, he liked it. About a third of it was fat so he couldn’t eat it. He enjoyed his crab roll, though they were nothing spectacular. We loved all the zero proof cocktails on the menu. And, the regular cocktails are always excellent. It was disappointing to see so many patrons dressed so casually. Bix used to have a dress code and it was nice. It’s a little bit of a letdown to go out to an upscale restaurant and have people in jeans and sneakers. I’m guessing restaurants are having a challenging time so they are relaxing their former policies. I can appreciate that. That’s just our take. We still enjoy Bix and will wear jeans and All Birds next time and probably go for cocktails and appetizers at the bar. The live piano is always wonderful. We sat upstairs this time. I’ve been coming since the late 90s and have always enjoyed sitting upstairs and having a view of everything. My husband has never been seated upstairs before and he enjoyed it. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves.

    I never write reviews, but delightfully do so for BIX! Outstanding experience, fantastic food, great atmosphere and exceptional service! Hosted a senior business dinner and could not have been more satisfied with the evening. 5-stars across the board and full endorsement for anybody seeking a fantastic evening out for formal or special occasions. Well done, thank you, BIX!

    Everything was excellent! The oysters, the Caesar salad and the duck. The acoustics could use a little improving because it was hard to hear the singer. Great vibe and amazing value.

    The only issue was I reserved a table with 3 weeks of advance and requested 1st floor , when we arrived have to wait for 30 minute

    One of most beautiful restaurants in SF. The good--- trout was amazing, server very welcoming, duck was very good. Not so good--oysters and shrimp cocktail both lacking flavor. Steak tartare was over salted. Some errors in the wine service. Music indeed energetic, I think a bit loud. That said, definitely a special occasion spot. Great time.

    Love the ambiance (booths - why doesn’t every restaurant have them) and fun atmosphere. Great place for us to catch up with our friends. Loved the whole experience from the hostesses and bar/cocktails to desert.
