About this restaurant

An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware.
Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture.
The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment.
All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

    The entire experience was outstanding. It is a wonderful place for a celebration. Our waiter was attentive and gave us several good suggestions. The stand out dishes were the bone marrow, the trout plus the duck. Just a wonderful experience.

    The food was good but not exceptional. Service was fine, but the noise level was intolerable. Conversation was all but impossible. Very disappointing given the description was a retro supper club with live jazz background music. Could not even hear the music.

    Unique style and ambience. We went on a friend suggestion. Way too crowded and noisy to enjoy the jazz ensemble playing which is one of the things we were looking forward to. Food was ok but nowhere worth the price. Service was their best attribute

    We had 3 appetizers, Caesar salad, Bavette and lobster spaghetti as well as chocolate bread pudding and lemon panna cotta and everything was delicious! More importantly AC was a great server with recommendations and attentive service. We had a lovely evening!

    Another great meal at Bix. We sat upstairs this time, and enjoyed it very much. Our service was fantastic! Great cocktails and appetizers. We always enjoy the bone marrow, oysters, and potato pilllows with caviar. All four of us enjoyed our meals and felt ecstatic when the meal concluded.

    Bix is a beautiful restaurant that I had very thoughtfully chosen to celebrate my birthday at while visiting San Francisco. The live music and sitting on the second level terrace were highlights of the evening. Unfortunately our server Andrew put a huge damper on our evening with his horrible attitude and direct rudeness towards us. He did not make the experience enjoyable and definitely not one where you want to celebrate your birthday. We were going to get a birthday dessert but truly by the end of the meal, my party and I just wanted to leave because our server was creating such a hostile environment. Not sure if we were his last table of the night to leave, and he was upset or what but he needs to do better for a place with this price point and a place where people celebrate special occasions. Big disappointment.
