An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware.
Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture.
The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment.
All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

    Though we have been to San Francisco many times, this was our first time dining at Bix, and we enjoyed it so much, we came back two nights in a row. Both nights, the hors d'oeuvres were great, the entrees were solid but the desserts were incredibly good - especially the bananas foster and chocolate bread pudding. Often desserts are somewhat neglected at restaurants but these were truly delicious. The ambience and music were fantastic. Really enjoyed it and would return (as we already did!)

    I hadn't been there in years and the food was way better than I remember. Our server was truly outstanding: professional, friendly, very accommodating of our self-imposed time limit (my son had a flight to catch). She even came with the dessert menu, unprompted, when we had 20 minutes left to be sure we didn't miss out on the sweets. The trout was really good!

    Certainly not about the food. Foodies should go elsewhere. Unfortunately they have a very boring and poorly executed menu. But the space is awesome the bar and bar staff is phenomenal the cocktails are very well done and thoughtful. The food though is another story very unfortunate that they don’t have a good chef. If you read other reviews it’s been a common thread that the foods pretty poor and not memorable. I had a salmon dish that was rubbery and no flavor my friend had a soup that had way too much salt in it the dinner roll was a common dinner roll with not much interest or flavor even the butter was bland the salad we got which was the market salad was just horrible soggy lettuceand they did something to the stone fruit that destroyed it wasn’t fresh should’ve been smashed and grilled or something no flavor. The service was dismal our waitress was way too intrusive not attentive and not engaging whatsoever. Your customers deserve more.

    What a classy experience... Great room, perfect cocktails, good piano-bass jazz, flawless service, plenty of interesting and affordable wines, and, oh, yes, the food -- abundant and excellent, avoiding all the usual clichés while remaining down to earth. I'd go back for the unique chicken hash à la Bix alone...

    The overall aesthetic of the restaurant hasn’t changed it’s beautiful from the moment you walk in with a beautiful bar and the grand staircase and the tiered dining area makes you feel like you’re going back in time. However, the menu has changed and it has not been updated on any of its websites or OpenTable they no longer serve the Wagyu burger or the filet mignon steak. They’ve changed it to a patty And do a skirt steak, which was delicious. However, you could tell for the price that they were trying to cut corners even the deviled eggs were smaller in size than I’ve had in the past when dining there the service was still great as well as the drinks. They just need to update the menu or lower the prices as it’s not a contender with a high-end menu as it has been in the past.

    We love coming to Bix.  I’m vegetarian and generally like the options. Yesterday‘s options were weak. I almost always start with the deviled eggs and they were great. The organic heirloom tomato cart served table side was wonderful. I had the eggplant as my entrée and it was good, but not spectacular. Our server was wonderful. She offered a homemade pasta with cherry tomatoes and fresh herbs. I make that at home so, no. My husband had the pork chop and when he could get meat, he liked it. About a third of it was fat so he couldn’t eat it. He enjoyed his crab roll, though they were nothing spectacular. We loved all the zero proof cocktails on the menu. And, the regular cocktails are always excellent. It was disappointing to see so many patrons dressed so casually. Bix used to have a dress code and it was nice. It’s a little bit of a letdown to go out to an upscale restaurant and have people in jeans and sneakers. I’m guessing restaurants are having a challenging time so they are relaxing their former policies. I can appreciate that. That’s just our take. We still enjoy Bix and will wear jeans and All Birds next time and probably go for cocktails and appetizers at the bar. The live piano is always wonderful. We sat upstairs this time. I’ve been coming since the late 90s and have always enjoyed sitting upstairs and having a view of everything. My husband has never been seated upstairs before and he enjoyed it. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves.

    Bix has been great for decades. Always a great experience in a unique and very cool space. From the small alley with the Bix sign, to the piano, to the bar, to the 2nd level seating, Bix has been one of our absolute favorites for over 20 years.
