Serving classic French dishes in lovely surroundings . Friendly and attentive service. They have a best cassoulet I have had outside of France - duck confit, sausage. pork belly instead of shoulder. No lamb or crispy bread crust but still delightful. Mussles in the classic cream sauce fine if nothing special. Beef bourguignon also good. My only complaint is the wine prices. The selection is OK but apart from a very few choices in the lower range, the prices quickly escalate to nearly four times retail in some cases. A more even price distribution would be appreciated and might increase bottle sales as well.
Consistent fine food and excellent service. Our favorite pdx restaurant.
We were delighted with everything about this restaurant. The food was divine and portions on salad and entree were large enough to share: butter lettuce salad, cassoulet and steak frites, yum! We also loved the ability to converse in the open atmosphere.
Escargot was a little too rich and fancy for our taste. We prefer a more classic prep in the shell. Service was perfect, ambiance delightful. Chef offered a tasty amuse buche. Musssels were delicious, everyone perfectly open. Crusty bread kept coming, wine suggestions were excellent. Easy commute by streetcar from the Keller and back to our hotel.
had a great time
waiter was a bit odd but no biggie
hostess was very friendly and welcoming
We had the most enjoyable lunch of our lives! The food was phenomenal and the staff was without exception wonderful!
This restaurant has some of the best french bistro food you will ever eat! The taste of your food will exceed all predetermined expectations. The ingredients are fresh and each dish is made from scratch!
My husband and I enjoyed our anniversary dinner at Bistro Agnes tremendously. The food was beyond delicious, well prepared, pretty to look at and appropriate portions. We shared the chicken liver mousse which came with toasts, butter and a small pot of fruit compote for accent. My main course was the sweetbreads (cooked perfectly) which had an incredible sauce over truffled small pastas with some greens throughout. My spouse had the steak frites which were also impeccable. With this dinner we enjoyed a bottle of rose champagne and thought it went very well with the meal. We lived in France for four years and this meal could easily have been one we had there in a very nice bistrot. The wait staff were professional and discreet and the pacing of the meal was fine. We certainly won't wait a year to repeat this experience!
I really enjoyed Bistro Agnes. It's on a corner, and I had a nice view of the city street outside. It was cozy on a winter evening. The lighting was romantic, not too bright or too dark, but just right, with a small candle (votive) on each table. The light-colored wood was beautiful; I really liked the atmosphere.
I had a glass of Malbec, which was delicious. I ordered the Butter Lettuce Salad, which was really tasty. It had a nice vinaigrette on it. The bread was pretty good, warm with a big enough slab of butter to not run out. For my entree, I had the Beef Bourguignon. It was phenomenal. The beef was so tender it melted in my mouth. It was in a nice, dark brown sauce, with a few caramelized onions and button mushrooms. The buttered egg noodles came on the side. They also gave me a tiny serving of vichyssoise with the bread. It was an amazing meal. I didn't have room for dessert. So glad I tried Bistro Agnes, and I will definitely be back.
Restaurant has welcoming and warm interior. Wait-staff was attentive and absolutely no complaints.
This was one of the better meals we have had in Portland. While a "twist" on classic French dishes, it was done with deference to tradition that delivered deliciously intricate yet balanced dishes. We had an endive salad, a filet on aligot, and shortribs Bourguignon and hope to revisit to try other options on the menu. The wine list is perhaps a bit short, but carefully selected: the Cahors malbec we had was superb. And we really appreciated having conversation in a normal voice, even as the evening wore on and tables were filled. Almost like being back in Paris!
Last time I was there, I had the butter lettuce salad and the veggie burger (Impossible Burger on the menu) for lunch, and both were excellent. Bistro Agnes is one of the few restaurants I've found that has both a very pleasant and comfortable ambience, and excellent food. Too many restaurants these days are hideously noisy, with hard surfaces everywhere, and unimaginative industrial chic decor. Bistro Agnes is a wonderful exception. No wonder you need to make your dinner reservation a bit ahead of time.
Great service between each course, nice wine recommendations. Timing was spot on so we could relax and savor over two hours. Foie Gras is a must, next time I need to save room for the rice almond pudding.
We loved our meal of mussels and pomme frites with the aoli sauce. We saw the restaurant written up in the NYTimes, decided to try it and were not disappointed! We will return.
It was a very nice way to start the new year
Consistently amazing food and service, every time I go. One of the best restaurants in PDX and one of my favorite steaks in the world! Also great atmosphere and wine list. Can't go wrong here.
Wonderful in every way possible
Lovely restaurant, delicious food, excellent service.
The anticipation of going to Bistro Agnes exceeded reality. The place was packed. We had a hard time getting a reservation and from reading many reviews our expectations were high. The menu is classic French country food but we found the food well presented but underseasoned and fairly dull. The chicken liver mouse is excellent as is the escargot but the entres left quite a bit to be desired. There are many other alternatives for a Portland diner that provide a more satisfying evening.
My partner and I thought this was one of the most authentic French meals we have had. He was born and raised in France and says this is now his favorite French restaurant in Portland.
Amazing place and foodand to top it off we forgot our leftovers and they actually called to say they’d save it for us if we wanted them to. That’s going above and beyond!
After a recent lunch, which was delicious, we decided to come back to bistro Agnes for dinner wth friends. My wife and friend each ordered trout, which was a substitute for petrale sole meunière on the menu. Unfortunately, the trout was significantly over cooked and very dry. I had Coq au vin which was good but not special. The service was warm and friendly as well as attentive. However, given the quality of our entrées we would probably not return.
Celebrated out 45th wedding anniversary. Spent 14 months in Paris back in the 1953-54 plus a few trips since and this the best Bistro I've found in Portland since. Cudo's to the Denton's.
Limited menu but good quality food.
A flawless meal. Excellent service, exceptional food. Everything was perfect- among the finest meals I have ever had. We had the Foie gras terrine, lyonnaise salad, sweetbreads, the burger, steak frites, steak au poivre and sole. Could not have been better.
Second time here and once again the food was flawless. Maybe the best French dining in the pacific northwest. Casual, classy bistro atmosphere, attentive service and open kitchen that showcases the skill and professionalism of the heart of this restaurant.
We were there after hearing about the burgers. Yes, they live up to the hype. Service excellent-very polite servers and staff. Will definitely try again.
Fabulous meal. Waiter was attentive without being intrusive. I had the filet mignon- best steak I have had in a long time. My husband had the ribeye and he said it was delicious. Wine recommended by our waiter was excellent. Can’t wait to go back!
I almost did not write a glowing review because I do not want this place to be even more popular than it is. Have had two dinners and one lunch and everything was perfect, from staff to delicious, interesting food, to a humane noise level.
Incredible meal. Very rich and decadent - only reason I didn’t give it a perfect score is it was all France, no Portland. I loved it, just could have used a touch of local flavors.
Great to have a comfortable place its good food, nice service and the ability to hear each other talk
Wonderful service. Great food and cocktails. Did I say, wonderful service
Absolute best quiche in town, the Boston lettuce salad is a perfect side dish, albeit with a tad too much dressing.
Bistro Agnes lives up to the hype. Delicious food, knowledgable staff, great wine selection. Recommended!
The stellar food comments are accurate! Truly a memorable culinary experience. Still dreaming about the Onion Soup, Quiche and Malted Chocolate Mouse. Want to return soon to try the Mussels and House Smoked Salmon.
Service was excellent! Servers were knowledgeable and attentive. Thanks again for recognizing my Birthday.
Lovely spot, great lighting and nicely balanced visually between between airy and cozy. The service is attentive without being intrusive. The problem lies in the kitchen- it serves a poor rendition of classic Bistro fare at very high prices.
A cassoulet at $38 was too salty to finish and not made with the classic fagolet bean. The escargot-a gloriously simple dish of garlic, butter and escargot —was not enhanced by the unwelcomed additions of under sautéed button mushrooms and almond flour, which lent a gritty texture to the dish. The lemon tart filing was nicely balanced between tart and sweet, but the crust was too rough to cut with a fork.
Very limited wine list.
Will not return, cannot recommend.
One of the best dining experiences we have had in Portland. The service was perfect and atmosphere classic French Bistro. The salads were so good(Escarole and Butterhead). I have never had better mussels. The cream wine herby sauce was over the top delicious. The Sole Meunière was equally wonderful. Be sure to save room for dessert. We shared the intensely rich Chocolate Mousse. We highly recommend Bistro Agnes
