Bertrand at Mister A's Ratings and Reviews
I have been to Bertrand at Mr. A's many times in the past being a theater goer in San Diego. For the holidays, I wanted to take some friends for their holiday decoration ambience and to celebrate a dear friends birthday. We did have a good time and the place looked fantastic. The service was top rate and really made us feel comfortable. Unfortunately the experience did hit a few road-bumps throughout the evening.
My first comment is that the value of our experience was poor. The balance of the menu as it relates to portion size left me feeling uneasy. Some appetizers were a good size, others were very small. The entrees were even worse in this regard. The steak duo entrée was like 4 ounces while other entrees like the swordfish special was a regular sized portion. Nothing makes your guests more uneasy that having to share their food because half of your party ended up with small dishes by chance. This was not reflected in the dish pricing at all either. It was strange and make me feel uneasy. It was almost like someone was trying to cash in on the holiday crowd. What a shame.
The other blaring thing my party noticed and commented on was that our appetizers were larger than our entrees. This was also a bit embarrassing for me as the host. Overall the food was excellent and as I expected. Thank God for that at least. I remember one of my party saying," yes it is very small but it does taste great".
My last comment is that I entered on my OpenTable reservation that this was a birthday celebration as I know Mr. A's does it right and makes folks feel special. However this time, no mention of the birthday in any way shape or form. I was upset but couldn't say anything in front of my guests.
I am chalking this up to an off night for the restaurant. They are usually much better so I would not shy away from going. The view is great and the meal is usually one you can brag about afterwards. This however was not one of those times.
The food and the service was good. There were 8 of us celebrating 39 years of friendship. Staff sent out a plate with 3 chocolates! I was offended by the 4% surcharge on top of the 18% gratuity. I would think our $1,000+ dinner tab would be enough! Will not be celebrating our 40th there! And frankly, I won't go back. Could you have spared 5 more chocolates???
By far the best restaurant I’ve ever been too. The service is unmatched with very welcoming servers that didn’t make us fell uncomfortable but made us feel welcomed and valued. The food was amazing and the drinks as well and the view is breathtaking. Nothing but positives in this restaurant.
This was a special treat but very worth it. The attention by the staff was excellent. The booth seat we had was very comfortable. The food was delicious and so were the drinks, even the "no proof" ones. We sat inside but were able to go outside to take pictures in the lounge area.
Food was good
We arrived early because all of the warnings about fines for missed reservations. We arrived 40 minutes early and had a drink on the outside balcony. The staff forgot we were out there at our reservation time and we had to go in to get seated.
The primary waitress was weak - forgot anniversary note from Open Table reservation. The assistant server was awesome. Overall, we will go somewhere else for a special occasion next time we are in San Diego.
My wife and I have been to Mr. A’s before and the view is always the first thing that comes to mind. It is simply stunning. So when her sister came from Montana, it only seemed natural to take her there. The food is always well prepared. This time, my wife and I shared the cassoulet and sea bass. Both were excellent. Her sister had the gorgonzola crusted filet of beef. The sample she shared with me was melt-in-your-mouth tender. But the highlight of the meal was the braised octopus appetizer. Highly recommended. The service, as always, was first class.
My personal taste in food does not tend toward the beautiful creations that come out of the
Mr. A's kitchen. That said, this is a very special place and whatever you choose to eat you can be assured it is the best that it could be. A beautiful room, an incredible view of a beautiful city and friendly, professional staff. Who cares what you are eating? It's just great to be there.
Great place--my wife and I arrived early for a special dinner, we sat outside with a spectacular view of the city for a cocktail. The manager later sat us at a table with a gorgeous view (still earlier than our reservation), pulled our chairs out and situated us, and everyone made sure we were completely comfortable. Food was really good. View is incredible, no table is a bad table, all along the windows. Going back next time we're in town.
Thanksgiving at Mr. A’s was a new experience for us, and the food was outstanding as always. However, we missed the attentiveness of the waitstaff and the subdued ambience we’ve loved on prior evenings here. Today we found ourselves wanting for service at times and the noise level was quite high, but not surprising for a very busy holiday in one of San Diego’s finest. We’ll be back, but will pick a more peaceful occasion!
I discovered this place online 3 years ago. I wanted to take my wife to a nice scenic dinner spot for her birthday. Our first experience was just amazing. The food was very delicious and the staff are extremely nice and are professional to the highest levels. Our experience was so great that we started a tradition. This was our 3rd birthday celebration and I plan on continuing this for years to come.
Hubby found their vegetarian tasting menu online. What a find to celebrate my birthday as almost NO “fine dining” restaurants offer options for us! The total experience was very special...the service...the view...the craft cocktail options. The tasting menu was lovely but...where was my protein??? The veggies were all delicious but even vegetarians need protein! We were quite surprised that the chef hadn’t added a grain or one of the other many options. Hubby had the short rib/flank steak and enjoyed it thoroughly. Apple fritter for dessert was underwhelming...our local donut shop makes a MUCH better version.
Everything great , The first Martini was great the second one I had to return and they fixed it the server was great and very courteous , over all from the minute you walk in to the end they are extremely nice .
The sea bass plate : the fish was dry not succulent ...but OK I expected better ...Not a major disappointment
I'm from Dallas and was looking for a romantic place to take my boyfriend for his birthday. I came across this restaurant and was not disappointed. It was extremely romantic, and he was so impressed with the service. From the food and drinks to the service and the view, the night was absolutely perfect!
Great spot for lunch. Stunning view of San Diego harbor, Coronado, Pacific Ocean, downtown skyline. The food was delicious. We had lamb chops and the special of the day, linguine with mussels and chorizo. A must visit location, if not for a meal, then for tapas, coffee, tea or an adult beverage on the expansive patio. Worth the trip. Valet parking in the building (enter off Fourth Ave). Metered street parking. The restaurant is on the top floor of the building.
