Beer Baron- Oakland
Had a blast yesterday! Thank you again OpenTable 😌🙏🏽
We were here for lunch service on a Saturday.
The food was good, but it took a really long time to arrive. The service was abysmal. Don't be in a rush when you dine here.
We ordered appetizers and our main courses, and there was no sign of any food an hour later. We inquired with the server, and shortly thereafter, she said she punched in our appetizers. Uhh, what? Finally, our main courses arrived, and five minutes after that, our appetizers showed up. We sure could have used the appetizers during that hour-long wait.
Luckily, it was the weekend and we didn't have to rush back to work, so we enjoyed the company of friends while we were waiting. It's also good that nobody had low blood sugar since the food took forever to arrive.
Apparently the server was new, but new guests arrived at tables around us, ate, paid, and left before we received our food. We saw food constantly flying out of the kitchen, but none of it was headed our way. Not sure what's going on with this place, but it feels chaotic and not in a good way.
P.S. We received a burger that we asked for grilled onions on -- and it contained raw onions, too. Double the onion!
Drinks and patio are lovely, but the food is terrible!
A very odd experience at Beer Baron. We stood in the front by the host table waiting to be seated in what seemed like a relatively empty restaurant with plenty of servers. A server did come by and let us know the host would be with us soon. She eventually came and sat us and acted like it was an inconvenience. We then proceeded to wait for probably 15 minutes as people (servers and what seemed like maybe the manager) walked by us numerous times without initiating contact. It was not busy and there was a lot of standing around. We were puzzled , found some humor in this, and eventually got up and went to the bar where we were served relatively quickly. Once initiating contact with the bartender, things improved. Cocktails were good as was food. I would go there again just to see if it was a one time event or regular service .
I've been to the BeerBaron on College several times, always leaving with a smile on my face. This time, however, I was a little less enthusiastic, perhaps because we ate at 8 pm and by then the sidewalks had rolled up and the place seemed lackluster. Although it probably hasn't changed, the menu seemed less compelling. My guest and I both had the beef cheek tacos which were just 3 tortillas with the stewed beef and a little garnish. However, it was listed as an appetizer so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Nothing really stood out on the mains except for the burger which I've had a few times and love. Just wanted something else. Service, as always, was very nice and the bar is a stunner.
This was my second time going, I have too say I was very disappointed in the quality of the food. The first time the quality of food was much better.
I thought our server was the best part of the meal.
Not sure I will come back, unless the quality of the food improves. Also, my daughter ordered the kids Mac and cheese and the portion if it was quite small.
Food was delicious, service was terrible. They accidentally gave our reservation to another party, and were generally slow and inattentive- took forever to get us menus, water, the bill. The bartending staff was great, though.
The service was awful! It took forever & their was both a good & a drink auction! Ridiculous!
Lively corner location in Rockridge with indoor/outdoor seating. Have eaten there twice, dinner and weekend lunch. Service very slow both visits, starting with waiting to be greeted. Friendly staff, though, and we liked our fried chicken and waffle. Generous portion. However "Fresno slaw" consisted of 2 microscopically thin slices of jalapeño and another pepper. Our iced tea refill incurred a totally new glassful and an extra 50 cents apiece. Would still return one more time.
SLOW service, food was fine, nothing to write home about, $10 for guac and chips! -- but you get to sit outside with a fairly large beer menu. Not bad, but felt more like I was in Walnut Creek than Oakland.
Does not offer outdoor reservations despite Open Table’s offering of such.
Sunny patio. Server friendly but two of us did not get served at the same time. Food quality pretty unacceptable, unfortunately.
Dined on the patio, and staff was accommodating when we requested shade. The mac and cheese was delicious as was my friend's beef cheek tacos.
Great staff! Great food! Maybe I'm just too old now, but $40 for beer and burger/fries seems a little stiff, but I'd do it again! One problem: noise level inside. My dinner partner and I could barely hear each other!
Need more variety in the menu, particularly more salads that can be mixed with fish or meat or tofu.
The desert menu also needs a slight expansion.
The beer menu is good.
Great room, excellent design, great beer and I guess, Whiskey selection. Friendly staff...service a bit up and down. Small menu with tasty items. I had pulled pork fritters and a felafel burger..both very good. My sister had veggie tacos which she liked very much. Will come back to sit on the patio...very inviting, when it gets a bit warmer
The food is just so bad. Very underwhelming burger, salmon acceptable but had to ask for lemon. Do they have a clue as to how to make ratatouille? Note:eggplant should not be basically raw. Spices horrid. Did anyone taste it? And chicken tacos filled with chicken slop. Wow! Only good was the chick peas. Do not eat here. Only go for drinks and the patio.
Amazing outdoor patio, poor service, food menu that tries too hard and ends up disappointing. It’s really the drinks and patio that will keep me coming back
This is a great pub! The tables are spaced well so you don't feel like you're packed in to the place. It's a great location and easy to get to but the parking may be a challenge since it's College Ave and you have to park in the surrounding neighborhood. The small plate food was really good. We had the fried chickpeas, kale & quinoa salad, and chili lime cashews. The service was good, but I at one point I wanted to order another drink, but I think they got slammed (it was a Friday night), so when the waiter checked on us ~20 minutes later the desire had passed and we were getting ready to go. Overall, I definitely recommend this place to meet up with friends for good food and conversation.
Service was good. The waiter was attentive and came back to check on us several times. The food, however, was disappointing and very over priced. The description of the items on the menu do not accurately reflect what is served on/with the meal and the portion sizes were very small. I would not recommend eating here.
Went to Beer Baron for Happy Hour with a friend. This visit the beer selection had two Belgian strong dark (quadruple) beers. Great! Often an American bar brags about many taps and you have a choice of 20 types of IPA. I do not like IPA. So I was very happy to see my preferred beer style. m More quads and more tripels! And the Belgian fries are also good.
Food and Beer were great. Definitely would go back again.
Burger was to die for!!! Duck fat fries perfectly crispy and fluffy inside. Amazing cocktails so don’t let the name “beer” baron mislead you.
Friendly servers, good food . We arrived a little early but they let us wait inside for our friends. We were not rushed and I would definitely recommend them. A few mor choices on the brunch menu would be nice.
We had a great time. Our server was spot on and the food very tasty at a great price. Ambiance is energetic-fun. Definitely try the duck fries.
Met my daughter here after work. Good spot to snack and drink.
We went here for brunch and at best it was average. The food has good flavor but wasn't hot when it arrived at our table. I had the mushrooms and polenta the flavor was okay but the presentation was bad. It looked like polenta soup and I ordered an egg over easy with it and the egg was over hard. My son had the French toast. My five year old was pleased with it or it could have been because he was starving, it took 30mins after we ordered to get the food. My husband ordered the heat stroke club and it was the best dish but the fries were greasy and luke warm. We waited and waited and waited before we could wave down any employee to request a check. And then we waited and waited and waited for change. Finally I walked up to the waiter station to get my change and waited and waited. Finally I just gave them a credit card and bounce. All this waiting added and extra 20 mins to our dining time.... And that was just trying to get the check and change. Not worth the reservation unless you really enjoy waiting and requesting everything you need.
I have dined out at least weekly for the past 25 years and have very rarely written negative reviews but had to this time. The food was good but the service was beyond terrible. I made reservations for 7:15 and arrived right on time. My husband and I weren’t seated until just before 8. But another couple who came in right after us who also had reservations was seated about 20 minutes sooner. The hostess checked in with us often and each time she told us that we would have a table in the main dining room in a few minutes. But when we were finally seated she put us at a table in the bar area. Apparently at no time was there ever a table in the main dining room being prepared for us, contrary to what the hostess had told us repeatedly. When I asked the hostess why the other couple who came in after us was seated a long time before we were seated, she stumbled over her words at first and then apologized and said that the other couple had asked for that specific table when they arrived. When we were finally seated it took quite a while for someone to take our order. It took even longer to get water. Three people offered us water but none seemed to be able to deliver for for several. Meanwhile the other couple was enjoying dinner and a second round of drinks. And when our food finally arrived, one of the three items we ordered was wrong. At that point we didn’t complain or send it back. We just ate, paid and left. One important detail I’ve left out so far: I’m black and my husband is white. The other couple was a white couple. Now I can’t get inside anyone’s head to know if race had anything to do with how I was treated but throughout my life I’ve seen a number of situations where people have treated me differently because of my race. To be fair the restaurant staff members were all outwardly friendly but it felt somewhat passive aggressive. I’ll never know if it was just incredibly bad service or bad service due to racial bias. Either way I don’t plan to return.
Hello Kim, Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback, I apologize for your poor experience. I can, however, assure you that our intentions were absolutely not racially biased. Had you given me any indication of your dissatisfaction during my check-ins, I would have made every effort to resolve any issue. You will soon be receiving a personal invitation to return and allow us to make it up to you. Thank you again for the feedback; We cannot improve without it. Kind Regards, Shandel-GM
Overall good experience. Reasonably priced. Good beer and spirits. Outside options. Only two downsides: parking availability and having to wait on our reservation. On the positive side the hostess found a spot for us to wait at the auxiliary bar. Would recommend for casual dining.
It is hard to overstate the stellar flavors and robust whiskey list. The rest of the review comes with the disclaimer that I enjoyed the whiskey list before, during, and after enjoying the food. I went on a cute foodie date for restaurant week after reading about the steal that the restaurant week menu is. Collectively, we ordered the pulled pork nuggets, the kale salad, the butter chicken, and the salmon. My date tells me the kale salad was really good. I'll trust her and appreciate that it filled her up so I could indulge in the nuggets, chicken, and salmon. Deep fried pulled pork is a great way to start any meal and these did not disappoint. The chicken in the butter chicken was tender and the gravy was so good I mopped it up with the stellar fresh nan. After eating the butter chicken, I was surprised at how authentic the western style salmon tasted. It was great. The salmon was cooked perfectly. I should have taken more pictures of the food.
Perfect way to visit with friends on a rainy afternoon.
Went during Oakland's Restaurant Week. Great value of 2 courses for $20. Was pleasantly surprised with the food quality (ordered the Ora Salmon and Butter Chicken).
We hit beer baron for Oakland RW. We don’t like the bar area but the RW food was very good. Highly recommend if like us you are first time visitors.
New Year’s Day brunch was severely understaffed. the food and drinks took a ridiculous amount of time (60 minutes for food and about 30 for drinks)
Hello, Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback, we apologize for your poor experience. You were absolutely correct that we were vastly understaffed (partly due to forecasting, but also several staff members called out sick) We were not at our best, and I would hope that you might allow us to welcome you back for another visit. I will personally ensure that you receive the best that we can offer. Thank you again for the feedback; we cannot improve without it. Kind Regards, Shandel
NYE - dinner and drinks with friends. Always a fun spot but they need to fix the lighting...way too harsh and bright
This is one of the few places with good food and wine where you can have a conversation without yelling. Also enjoyed the outside seating.
Fun location, bigger than most in Rockridge and lively. Tacos, Pork balls, Kale-Quinoa salad were all great. It was a fun spot for my birthday-holiday gathering with 12 girls.
Second time to this neighborhood restaurant. We like the $5 bourbon Tuesday. Had shrimp and steak dinners. Both were very good
